FEATURE: Cooper offense finding stride in running game after slow start out of the gates

Through the Cooper football team’s first two games — losses to Keller and Abilene High — the Cougars struggled to find the level of consistency they’re accustomed to in the running game.

Behind an inexperienced line breaking in several new starters, CHS managed only 51 yards rushing on 29 carries in a 34-16 season-opening loss to the Indians before mustering 50 yards on 18 attempts in a 14-10 setback against its crosstown rival.

But after averaging a mere 2.1 yards per carry through the first two weeks of the season, the Coogs experienced a breakthrough in last week’s 41-38 overtime win over San Angelo Central. And coming off that performance, which saw Cooper amass 257 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, coach Aaron Roan is hoping that level of success will be become a regular occurrence going forward.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Brownwood entertains red hot Glen Rose (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country picks)

LAST WEEK: 51-10, .836
SEASON TOTAL: 131-42, .757

Football picks are something I take pride in and it irritates me to no end when I stink it up. So let’s just say, I burned some midnight oil to get that situation corrected last week.

As a result, the column recovered with a solid .836 percentage in Week 3, salvaging my bruised ego after a disastrous Week 2 tally. In all, 51 of 61 area picks hit the mark last week, elevating my season’s record above 75 percent.

That’s more like it.

Week 4 in the meantime, presents a lineup of some of the most difficult area picks we’ve had this season — including an explosive Glen Rose team facing Brownwood in our BCP Game of the Week. Let’s dive in, shall we?

Here’s this week’s forecast:

GAME STORY: Abilene High downs rival Cooper in four to even district record at 1-1

Playing each other in a district match for the first time since 2013, the Abilene High and Cooper volleyball teams met Tuesday at Cougar Gym, each looking to even their District 4-5A record at 1-1. In the end, it was the Lady Eagles who prevailed, outlasting their crosstown rivals for a hard-fought 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 26-24 victory.

AHS, which opened league play with a loss to Wylie on Friday, found itself down 23-22 in Game 2 and 23-20 in Game 4 against Cooper on Tuesday. But each time, the Lady Eagles rallied to win the set — the first to take a commanding 2-0 lead and the second to clinch the match and avoid a do-or-die fifth set.

The victory improved coach Caroline Cleveland’s team to 10-15 on the year, while Cooper fell to 11-14 overall and 0-2 in district play.

FEATURE: Versatile Williams’ leadership matching her physical talent

Kamryn Williams is more than just a six-rotation standout for Wall’s volleyball program.

While she once again leads the No. 8 Lady Hawks in kills (3.7 per set), it’s Williams’ senior leadership and determination that have been just as impressive.

“For the first time, she’s not necessarily our only go-to player because now anytime, we can go to anyone,” Wall coach Robynn Jones said. “That says a lot about Kamryn.

“She’s helped other players come into their own and gain the confidence they need so we can have a great team, not a good team.”

GAME STORY: Warren, Jackson lift Cooper to thrilling 41-38 OT win over Central

Cooper quarterback Chris Warren will be the first to admit that he struggles keeping his eyes downfield when the pocket is collapsing around him.

When the senior was faced with that exact situation, trailing San Angelo Central 38-35 in overtime, what did Warren do?

He kept his eyes downfield, found Malik Jackson wide open in the end zone and hit his fellow senior for a thrilling 41-38 walk-off win, giving the Cougars their first win of the season.

GAME STORY: Early miscues cost Wylie in 33-28 loss to Lubbock Cooper

The Wylie football team outgained Lubbock Cooper 538-396 and punted just once Friday night in its home opener against the Pirates. But a handful of early miscues left the Bulldogs on the short side of a 33-28 score in a thrilling nondistrict matchup at Hugh Sandifer Stadium.

WHS (2-1) had at least two first downs on each of its nine possessions, driving inside the Cooper 35-yard line on every one. But a kickoff return touchdown by the Pirates and a pair of red zone turnovers kept the Bulldogs from taking control in the first half, allowing the Pirates to find their offensive rhythm after halftime.

With the score tied at 14 at the break, Cooper ran the ball on all 31 of its second-half snaps, amassing 243 of its 309 rushing yards in the final two quarters. The Pirates found the end zone on each of their first three possessions of the second half, allowing coach Chip Darden’s squad to escape Abilene with a hard-fought victory.

FEATURE: Clutch, opportunistic Wylie defense off to roaring start

As a former defensive coordinator, Wylie coach Clay Martin has a warm place in his heart for well-played defense. Through the first two games of this season, he’s seen a lot of it.

Over their last six quarters, the Bulldogs have allowed just a single touchdown, twice forcing fumbles inside the 10 to thwart opponents’ scoring chances.

That level of defensive dominance has been crucial in Wylie’s 2-0 start, which saw the Bulldogs hold off a second-half rally at Brownwood before shutting out Lubbock Monterey on the road. With Lubbock Cooper coming to Hugh Sandifer Stadium this week, the Wylie defense is set for its biggest test of the young season, but Martin is thrilled with what he’s seen from that unit so far and excited to see how the Bulldogs attack the next challenge put in front of them.

FEATURE: Young Cooper Cougars trusting the process amid 0-2 start

After graduating 29 of 49 lettermen from last year’s team, Cooper coach Aaron Roan knew the Cougars would experience some growing pains this fall.

And through an 0-2 start to the season, they have.

But if you think the Cougars are alarmed or concerned about their record at this stage, you’d be wrong. For Cooper — and particularly its coach — it’s more about process than results this time of year. And the Coogs are still on track to accomplish all of the goals they’ve set for themselves this season.

FEATURE: Abilene High offense finding rhythm, identity in quick passing game

Coming off a season opener in which they were held by Odessa Permian to just 48 total yards and three first downs, the Abilene High Eagles entered last week’s matchup against crosstown rival Cooper in search of some offensive rhythm and an identity on that side of the football.

They found both in the form of a quick, controlled passing game.

Switching to junior quarterback Dylan Slack, who threw four passes as the backup in AHS’ opener, the Eagles showed significant improvement, amassing 257 yards (184 of those passing) in a dramatic 14-10 win over the Cougars. And while the offensive numbers were still modest compared to the more explosive offensive units you might find area- and statewide, the consistency with which they were achieved was a big bright spot for coach Mike Fullen.

FEATURE: Sophomore RB Wilkerson a budding star for resurgent Comanche Indians

Two games into the 2022 football season, the Comanche Indians have already doubled their win total from a year ago and mustered nearly 100 points. But that’s only part of one of the area’s better “feel good” stories as fall unfolds.

Comanche has also introduced a prime candidate to make fans do a double-take as they pore over the area’s weekly stat sheets moving forward.

Displaying a scintillating blend of thunder and lightning, sophomore running back Sawyer Wilkerson gained 103 yards on 12 carries in Comanche’s season-opening 49-7 victory over Brady. Then, last Friday during a 42-18 thumping of Bangs, Wilkerson upshifted to race for 273 more yards (on 18 carries). That means every time this year that a stadium announcer has uttered the words, “Wilkerson with the carry,” the back has carried the ball an average of 12½ yards.

FEATURE: Roscoe left scrambling for game after mid-week cancellation

ROSCOE — After several rings, a normally jovial Jake Freeman picked up his phone and answered with a monotoned “hello.” The 10th-year Roscoe coach was not in a good mood — a fact that he pointed out less than 15 seconds into Thursday’s conversation with BigCountryPreps.com.

Freeman had, at this point of the week, expected to be in his final stages of preparation for a Friday game with Midland TLCA. He was, instead, desperately trying to find a game for the Plowboys on short notice after receiving a Wednesday call from his scheduled opponent informing him that TLCA would not be playing.

Freeman remembered the call’s arrival to the very minute — 11:33 a.m.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Cisco, Breckenridge clash in matchup of unbeatens (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country Picks)

LAST WEEK: 40-18, .690
SEASON TOTAL: 80-32, .714

After staggering through one my worst pick weeks in recent memory with a .690 percentage, I briefly considered changing my system from dart throwing to coin flipping but thought better of it.

Just remember, if I’ve picked your team to lose, there’s no reason to get angry. At this juncture, it’s a positive.

It’s the people I’ve picked to win who should be torqued off.

Alright, let’s see if I can recover from last week’s debacle.

Here’s this week’s Big Country forecast:
