GAME STORY: Albany tops Roscoe 44-7 in a tale of two halves

Albany coach Denney Faith watches pregame warmups prior to Friday’s 44-7 win over Roscoe at Robert Nail Stadium.

ALBANY — For Albany, it was not unlike countless of big district games the Lions have played over the years. For the upstart Roscoe Plowboys, it was an opportunity to challenge a perennial area power for the district lead with the entire area paying attention.

And for 24 minutes, Roscoe (a 31-point underdog) appeared ready to shock the Big Country, forcing four first-half turnovers and heading into the locker room trailing 10-7.  It was Albany, however, which had experience in closing big games and suddenly turned this one into a rout with a 34-0 second half run to win 44-7.

Adam Hill rushed for 253 yards and two scores and caught a 15-yard TD pass to lead top-ranked Albany (8-0, 3-0 District 6-2A DII), which survived a five-turnover night by limiting Roscoe (6-2, 2-1) to only 149 total yards and no offensive touchdowns.

“(Roscoe) was really playing well,” Albany coach Denney Faith said. “They were loading the box to stop Adam and doing some things that caught us off guard.  They came out and played a great first half and we had to do a lot better.”

GAME STORY: Ball control offense lifts Brock to crucial win over Paradise

BROCK — Heading into Friday night’s key District 4-3A Division I showdown between No. 5 Paradise and No. 7 Brock, the Eagles knew that they would have a tough challenge on their hands at home with the Panthers.

Paradise had used an explosive offense that averaged 46.3 points per game and a defense that had allowed a grand total of 46 points all year while rolling to an 8-0 start overall and a 4-0 mark in district.

Meanwhile, Brock had allowed a total of three points in the past three weeks while putting up 78, 61 and 63 points, respectively. So something was bound to give at Eagle Stadium.

In the end, it was the Eagles who made enough key plays to take a 26-14 win and put themselves in position to claim a district championship.

BCP GAME OF THE WEEK: Yellow Jackets beat China Spring at its own game, outslug Cougars 31-21

STEPHENVILLE — In a game some expected to be a shootout, the Stephenville Yellow Jackets used some old-fashioned power football to hand China Spring a 31-21 loss in the Big Country Preps Game of the Week.

Tate Maruska rushed for 125 yards and two scores and Ryan Gafford was 13 of 18 for 175 yards to lead Stephenville (6-2, 2-0), which overcame an early 7-0 deficit to earn its fourth straight win.

China Spring (6-3, 2-1), which saw a three-game winning streak snapped, was held to a season-low point total. Cash McCollum led the Cougars with 177 yards passing and three TDs.   But ground-oriented China Spring was held to an uncharacteristically low rushing total of 119 yards, led by Kyle Barton with 63.

“I think their game plan was to run the football and chew up clock,” Stephenville coach Sterling Doty said of the Cougars. “Their first drive for a touchdown took up  (seven) minutes of the first quarter. They wanted to slow it down, keep their defense on the sideline and use their rushing attack to their advantage.”

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Stephenville hosts China Spring (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country Picks)

LAST WEEK: 40-8, .833
SEASON TOTAL: 347-79, .814

As Week 9 of the 2023Texas High School football season gets underway, there are multiple high-profile games that would qualify as our Big Country Preps Game of the Week.

But we’re settling for a rare Thursday night matchup at Tarleton State University where seventh-ranked 4A DI Stephenville (5-2, 1-0) will play host to fourth-ranked China Spring (6-2, 2-0) in a game will give the victor sole possession of first place in District 5.

Picking who wins it may come down to throwing darts, but I do believe China Spring has one key advantage.

GAME STORY: Cooper volleyball keeps playoff hopes alive with five-set win over Lubbock Monterey

Hosting Lubbock Monterey with their dimming playoff hopes on the line, the Cooper volleyball team played with the urgency of a squad fighting for its postseason life, outlasting the Lady Plainsmen for a thrilling 26-28, 25-14, 25-23, 23-25, 15-13 victory Tuesday at Cougar Gym.

In a back-and-forth match that saw four of the five sets decided by the minimum two points, the youthful Lady Cougars (11-26 overall, 2-8 in District 4-5A) did just enough to escape with the win, pulling within two victories of the Lady Plainsmen (20-22, 4-7) with two matches remaining.

Now coach Nora Campbell’s team will need to win at Lubbock High (10-28, 1-9) on Friday and at home against Lubbock Coronado (15-26, 3-7) next Tuesday and hope LHS can knock off Monterey on the road on the final night of the regular season to earn a rubber match against the Lady Plainsmen for the district’s final playoff spot.
