LUBBOCK — The Wylie football bounced back from last week’s loss to Wichita Falls Rider with a blowout win over Lubbock High, pushing out to a 42-0 halftime lead and cruising from there to a 52-7 victory Friday at Lowrey Field.

The Bulldogs outgained the Westerners 454-159, building a 49-0 lead before the home team finally got on the board in the third quarter.

The win improved Wylie to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in district play, setting up key district matchups with Amarillo Palo Duro and Cooper in Abilene to close out the regular season.

“I was proud of the way in which we started,” Wylie coach Clay Martin said. “Our kids did a great job of traveling and executing from the beginning of the game. We just got off to a big lead and that was obviously kind of the difference.”

Wylie opened the scoring at the 6:37 mark of the first quarter, using a 9-yard pass from Bear Meng to Braden Regala to take a lead it would only add to the rest of the way.

Meng added his second touchdown pass of the night — a 57-yard strike to Derrick Evans on the final play of the first quarter — to take a 14-0 lead into the second period, and the Bulldogs tacked on four more touchdowns before halftime.

Meng added a 28-yard rushing score to open the second-quarter barrage, followed by a 5-yard scoring run by Malachi Daniels, a 4-yard TD pass from Meng to Evans and a 5-yard touchdown strike from Keegan Anderson to Hood.

After that, it was academic, as Julius Laine’s 1-yard scoring run put the Bulldogs up 49-0 in the third quarter, before Lubbock High finally got on the board with a 54-yard pass from Dallas Trevino to Trini Tijerina.

Brady Clark, who was perfect on seven point-after tries, capped the scoring five seconds into the fourth quarter with a 20-yard field goal, and Wylie coasted from there to its fifth win in six games.

“I thought all of our kids performed,” Martin said. “A lot of people got an opportunity to play and I was really pleased with the way everybody played. I thought that it was a good team win.”

The Bulldogs ran for 236 yards and passed for 218 in the victory, getting a big game from Meng (7-11-0—162, 3 TDs passing; 2-48, 1 TD rushing) and receivers Regala (3-82, 1 TD receiving; 2-15 rushing) and Evans (4-81, 2 TDs receiving). Laine was Wylie’s leading rusher with 87 yards on nine carries.

Lubbock High, which rushed for just 37 yards in the loss, got 131 yards and a touchdown passing from Trevino and 64 yards and a score receiving from Tijerina.

The Bulldogs will get back on the field with their final regular season home game next week, when they host Palo Duro. That game will set up a big regular season finale at Cooper.

“We’ll go back to work in the morning and prepare for Palo Duro,” Martin said. “We’ve got a big challenge ahead of us next Friday, and we’re just looking forward to the preparation.”
