EVAN REN: Big Country Preps Top 10 Stories for 2019

It’s never easy picking the top 10 stories of the year for the Big Country Preps coverage area.

Stretching from Forsan in the west to Brock in the east and from San Saba in the south to Munday in the north, there are literally thousands of athletes producing countless stories to choose from.

Pairing all of that down to just 10 examples forces one to leave out several notable options on a yearly basis. The upside of all this is that the area is never short on quality stories to reflect on.

So as we say goodbye to the year 2019, we salute those local athletes and coaches who produced yet another memorable year for the entire area.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the top stories from last year, in descending order:

AP ALL-STATE: Cooper’s Davis, Hawley’s Marshall headline area honorees

Cooper defensive back Dylon Davis and Hawley running Colton Marshall headlined a list of 48 Big Country players to earn all-state designation from The Associated Press Sports Editors last week, garnering player of the year honors for their respective classifications.

Davis, who led the state in interceptions this season with 16, was the defensive player of the year in Class 5A, while Marshall, a 3,500-yard rusher, was named Class 2A’s top offensive player.

Those two, who both led their teams to deep playoff runs, were among a group of 11 local or area players to earn first-team accolades, while the Big Country accounted for 15 second-team spots and 26 honorable mention nods across the five 11-man classifications.

EVAN REN: Hamlin will fully appreciate its state experience

While sitting in the postgame news conference following Hamlin’s 25-20 loss to Mart on Thursday, I half expected the Pied Pipers to arrive with coach Russell Lucas barely able to speak.

They had just given the defending state champions all they wanted and could very well have dethroned the Panthers, had it not been for four turnovers. They had every reason to show up stone-faced and heartbroken — like so many other losing teams at state we’ve seen in the past.

That’s understandable.

Nobody goes to state with the goal of finishing second. And after 16 straight weeks of sweating blood, it’s difficult to get your emotions to turn on a dime.

SIDEBAR: Hamlin leaves it all on the field in state title game loss

ARLINGTON — Leading Hamlin in its first state championship game against a Mart squad that was making its 12th state appearance, coach Russell Lucas just wanted his Pied Pipers to block out all external noise and be themselves.

If it could play loose and with poise, as it had done in building a 12-2 record and earning Thursday’s historic opportunity, Lucas was confident his team could compete with the two-time defending champion Panthers.

The Pipers did all these things Thursday in a game that was tight to the finish. And though they came out on the losing end of a 25-20 slugfest, they left with their heads held high, knowing that the game was decided by their execution between the lines and not outside factors in a moment that was too large for them.

GAME STORY: Hamlin’s title chance slips amid four turnovers in loss to Mart

ARLINGTON — While prepping for Thursday’s Class 2A Division II state championship game against Mart, Hamlin coach Russell Lucas cited limiting big plays, winning the turnover battle and blocking out distractions as the top keys for the Pied Pipers to dethrone the defending state champions.

As it turned out, Hamlin achieved every key but one — losing the turnover battle (4-0) and eventually, the game, falling to Mart 25-20 at AT&T Stadium.

Roddrell Freeman rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns and Klyderion Campbell rushed for 60 yards and added a pick-six to lead Mart (13-3), which claimed its third straight state title with the win.

BCP PLAYOFF FORECAST: Can the Pipers stop Mart from a three-peat? Big Ev makes his pick

LAST WEEK:  0-2, .000

OVERALL: 486-97, .834

Picking .834 for the season but missing both state semifinal selections is akin to batting .400 for the year but striking out twice with the bases loaded in the seventh game of the World Series.

Well …. not exactly. But you get my point.

What can I say? After being on fire for 14 straight weeks, this column has hit a late-season slump, going 3-5 over the last two weeks and whiffing twice in the state semis. Nonetheless, I’ve got one more game to pick and it’s a biggie.

The Hamlin Pied Pipers (12-2) will square off with perennial powerhouse Mart (12-3) for the Class 2A Division II state title, officially closing the books on the best picks season I’ve ever had.

That said, let’s dive in.

Here’s this week’s forecast and we’ll see you in Arlington.

BCP Podcast No. 75: Evan, Daniel talk state title game with Hamlin’s Russell Lucas

During his time at Hamlin, coach Russell Lucas has built the Pied Piper football program into one of the most successful consistent in all of the Big Country. But before this season, he had never coached a team in a state title game.

That will change Thursday when the Pipers take on Mart for the Class 2A Division II championship at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Earlier this week, Lucas took some time to talk with Big Country Preps’ Evan Ren and Daniel Youngblood about his team’s historic run and the challenges his Pipers will face in Arlington for this week’s Capital Farm Credit Wednesday Night Podcast.

Also in this episode, Evan and Daniel close the book on Brock’s football season and talk some local hoops.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: Hamlin’s state newcomers challenge Mart’s ‘Jerry World’ vets

HAMLIN — In the 1986 motion picture “Hoosiers” there is a memorable scene in which coach Norman Dale (played by Gene Hackman) uses a clever tactic to help his small-town team overcome their feeling of “awe” after arriving at a huge basketball venue.

Taking out a tape measure, Dale instructs some of his players to measure the distance from the baseline to the free throw line and from the floor to the rim. The measurements, of course, were 15 and 10 feet, respectively.

“I think you’ll find these are the exact same measurements as our gym back in Hickory,” Dale says, making the point that the game is unchanged by all of the fancy surroundings.

Thursday morning at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, a group of green-clad people from Hamlin will meet on the field, where coach Russell Lucas will try to make a similar point.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Strong effort nets Brownwood senior the top spot

In a week that saw several top-flight performances, Brownwood senior Zach Strong handed in a genuine rarity — topping the 1000-point mark for his career while helping the Lions to a perfect record and tournament championship.

Helping Brownwood to a 5-0 record on the week, including a tournament title in Hamilton, Strong averaged 18.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game to earn all-tournament honors and our final Big Country Preps Player of the Week award of 2019.

EVAN REN: Hamlin, Lucas have earned their time in the sun

Everyone who regularly attends sporting events loves the sights, the sounds and the smells associated with simply being there. We soak it all in, take the images that are most notable, then splash them on to our memory like a fuzzy Leroy Neiman painting.

But imagery isn’t what keeps us coming back. That’s just the icing.

It’s the drama surrounding athletics that draws us in like a magnet. The human stories behind each team, each player and each coach are what capture our imagination and inspire us to root for one side, even if we have no vested interest in the outcome.

GAME STORY: Hamlin routs Stratford to earn first state title game appearance

PLAINVIEW — When Hamlin and Stratford met the first time this season in a late September nondistrict game, the result was a forgettable one for the Pied Pipers. But the HHS players made sure to remember how they felt at the end of that 39-6 drubbing.

Playing the Elks again in the Class 2A Division II semifinals, the Pipers reversed that outcome Thursday night, riding a flawless start to 56-23 win that was even more dominating than the 33-point margin might suggest.

The victory, which improved Hamlin to 12-2 on the year, has the Pipers in their first state title game in school history — realizing a goal the HHS seniors set for themselves in junior high.

FEATURE: With playmakers galore, Hamlin QB Warner may be an overlooked gem

It’s hard to imagine a third-year starting quarterback on a state semifinalist Texas high school football team being overlooked. Especially when his offense is averaging 47 points and 388 yards per game. And especially when he has completed 65 percent of his passes for 2,212 yards and 29 touchdowns against only four interceptions.

But that may be the case with Hamlin’s Braydin Warner.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Merkel’s Pursley earns this week’s top spot

It’s one thing to play great against teams from your own classification. But when one plays at a high level against programs much larger than his or her own, it tends to grab everyone’s attention.

Merkel senior guard Kaydi Pursley, who has already been on the media’s radar for more than two years, may have just upped her assessed value even more (if that’s possible).

Purlsey, who helped the Lady Badgers to a 4-1 mark last week, including a 3-1 finish at the Granbury tournament, put up big numbersagainst some big schools along the way to earn our Big Country Preps Player of the Week award.

GAME STORY: Hamlin blows out Wellington, earns spot in state semifinals

VERNON — A little more than a year after toppling Wellington in one of the biggest upsets of the 2018 season, the Hamlin Pied Pipers bested the Skyrockets once again on Friday.

This time, it earned coach Russell Lucas’ squad a spot in the Class 2A Division II state semifinals.

Trailing the Rockets 8-0 early in the second quarter after a sluggish start offensively, Hamlin rattled off 36 unanswered points on their way to an impressive 43-22 win, clinching the Pipers the Region II-2A DII championship and earning them a rematch with Stratford next week for a spot in the program’s first state title game.

FEATURE: Hamlin’s Williams producing all-around numbers that are difficult to top

HAMLIN — There have been faster players in the Big Country than Hamlin’s Jevon Williams. There have been better running backs, better receivers, better tacklers,  better defensive backs and better special teams players.

But few, very few players over the years, have been able to point to a statistical sheet and show more production in all the aforementioned areas than the HHS standout is posting this season.

Williams, along with his Hamlin teammates, will be facing Wellington in the Region II-2A DII championship game on Friday in Vernon. And in all likelihood, he will be a key element if the Pied Pipers (10-2) are to advance to the state semifinals.

“We’ve had some really good offensive players and really good defensive players,” Hamlin coach Russell Lucas said. “But not very often is it the same person.”

BCP PLAYOFF FORECAST: Six Big Country teams reach December

LAST WEEK: 8-2, .800

SEASON TOTAL: 483-92, .840

With the overall size of the Big Country encompassing more than 75 communities, one thing is nearly always certain: Somebody in a group that big is going to be good enough to make a run a state championship.

And sure enough, heading into December, no fewer than six teams in the Big Country Preps coverage area are still alive on the road to Arlington.

Brock, Hawley, San Saba and Hamlin have all pushed to the regional championship round in their respective classifications in 11-man, while Strawn and Blackwell have reached the state semifinals in six-man.

The task of forecasting it all falls on me, and we’re at the stage where getting it right is a real challenge.

This column is having one of its best seasons ever on pick accuracy, consistently hitting at more than 80 percent on a weekly basis and currently holding at 84 percent on the year.  So we shall see.

BCP Podcast No. 73: AHS’ Justin Reese checks in to talk Eagle hoops, Cane’s Key City Classic

As a former Abilene High Eagle himself, second-year AHS boys basketball coach Justin Reese has a strong desire to return the Eagle program to the glory it enjoyed in the 1980s and 90s. And for him, a big part of that is bringing back some of the traditions that helped make the AHS program what it was.

One of those was Abilene ISD’s Key City Classic, which is back for the first time in decades thanks in large part to Reese, who made it a priority upon his hiring to bring a high-profile tournament back to town. With the first Cane’s Key City Classic set to tip off Thursday, Reese took a few minutes to chat with Big Country Preps Daniel Youngblood about the tournament, his return to Abilene and this year’s Eagle team for the Capital Farm Credit Wednesday Night Podcast.

Also in this episode, Daniel and partner Evan Ren discuss last week’s playoff football results and this week’s region championship game matchups involving area squads.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hamlin’s Williams snags the award

He only had 15 carries on the day. But for Hamlin senior running back Jevon Williams, it was more than enough touches to earn our Big Country Preps Player of the Week award for a second time this season.

Helping the Pied Pipers to a 56-22 rout of Wheeler, Williams tallied 196 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. He also added a 17-yard pass reception and a 42-yard punt return.

Leading 22-21, Hamlin took control with five straight touchdowns between the 2:18 mark of the second quarter and the 5:18 mark of the fourth.

Williams scored all five them, with runs of 4, 20, 65, 8 and 2 yards.

With the win, Hamlin (10-2) advances to face Wellington (12-1) for the Region II-2A Division II championship at 7 p.m. Friday in Vernon.

BCP PLAYOFF FORECAST: 12 Big Country teams still have a shot at December football

LAST WEEK: 12-3, .800

SEASON TOTAL: 475-90, .841

BCP Podcast No. 72: Hawley’s Mitch Ables talks Bearcats football with Evan, Daniel

During his time at Hawley, Mitch Ables has steadily built the long-suffering Bearcat football program into an area contender. This year, he has the ‘Cats on their deepest run ever after the first area-round playoff victory in program history over defending state runner-up New Deal last Friday.

Earlier this week, Ables took some time to chat with Big Country Preps’ Evan Ren and Daniel Youngblood about this year’s team, which is unbeaten heading into Friday’s Region I-2A Division I semifinal matchup against Sundown (8-4), for the Capital Farm Credit Wednesday Night Podcast.

Also in this episode Evan and Daniel discuss their takeaways from the second round of the high school football playoffs and preview this week’s third round.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Garcia’s gutty effort earns him award

With 257 yards rushing and five touchdowns that averaged 48.4 yards in duration, Noah Garcia’s performance in Cooper’s 35-28 area-round win over Azle likely would have earned him our Big Country Preps Player of the Week award without any special circumstances.

Add in the fact that the junior running back missed a half of the second quarter and all of the third after suffering an asthma attack, and it only bolsters his case.

Behind Garcia, Cooper built a 28-7 halftime lead that might have been larger had he not had to leave the game at the midway point of the second quarter. And then, after the Hornets had cut the Cougars’ lead to seven with a dominating third-quarter performance, the Cougar standout came back to bust a 49-yard scoring run early in the fourth for what proved to be the game-winning score.

Heading into the second round of postseason play, we’re down to a dozen Big Country 11-man and nine six-man football teams still showing a pulse. The good news is, at least 12-14 clubs between both categories should advance to play over the Thanksgiving weekend.

BCP PLAYOFF FORECAST: Big Country teams kick off postseason (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country picks)

LAST WEEK: 34-7, .829

OVERALL: 431-83, .839

I say the same thing at this point every season.

We no longer have a Game of the Week. Once the playoffs start, they’re all the Game of the Week. We’ll only be limited by how many games we can get to and Big Country Preps will endeavor to get to as many as possible.

Nonetheless, some games warrant a close inspection as we head into the bi-district round.  So here’s a quick peek at the five games we view as the most intriguing heading into this week’s action, with the remainder of my postseason picks listed below.

BCP Podcast No. 70: Evan, Daniel chat with Sweetwater’s Ben McGehee

After coaching Sweetwater to a 10-win season in his first year as the school’s football coach in 2017 and experiencing a tough 1-9 campaign with a young squad last season, Ben McGehee has the Mustangs back on the rise this fall. Leading an SHS team that is still among the youngest in the Big Country, McGehee guided the Mustangs to back-to-back wins in their final two regular season games to move to 4-6 and secure a playoff berth.

Earlier this week, McGehee took some time to chat with Big Country Preps’ Evan Ren and Daniel Youngblood about his team’s run to the postseason, the potential of his young nucleus and what his experience at Sweetwater has been like for this week’s Capital Farm Credit Wednesday Night Podcast.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hamlin’s Williams takes the top spot

Williams

Not since 2001 had the Hamlin Pied Pipers topped Albany in a game of football — a time span that included 12 straight defeats.

So it goes without saying that when coach Russell Lucas’ crew finally broke through with a 66-20 win over the one area team they wanted to defeat more than any other, emotions were running a bit high at Piper Stadium on Friday.

And no player wearing green contributed more than senior Jevon Williams, who helped turn our Big Country Preps Game of the Week into something lopsided.

District 7-2A Division II: Week 11 Report

Cross Plains 45, Roscoe 20 — The Buffaloes wrapped up this district’s No. 3 playoff seed and eliminated Roscoe from playoff contention with a blowout road win over the Plowboys on Friday.

Cross Plains (7-3 overall, 2-2 in district) built a 19-0 lead by halftime and pushed its advantage to 45-8 with three fourth-quarter touchdowns. Quarterback Caleb Hernandez had a big day for the Buffs, passing for 127 yards while rushing for 63 yards and four scores on just eight carries.

CPHS will open the playoffs next week against Christoval, which topped the Buffs 26-14 in September. Roscoe, meanwhile, closes its season at 1-8 overall and 0-4 in district play.

BCP GAME OF THE WEEK: Pied Pipers end Albany hex with 66-20 romp

HAMLIN — Whether it was due to a mental block or one team simply outplaying the other, Albany’s 18-year, 12-game winning streak over Hamlin came to a crashing halt on Friday with a 66-20 win for the Pied Pipers in the Big Country Preps Game of the Week.

Jevon Williams rushed for 188 yards and four scores and added a 34-yard fumble return for a TD and two picks to lead Hamlin (7-2, 4-0 District 7-2A DII) which took the district title in dominating fashion.

Albany, which was outgained 536-150, finished its regular season at 7-3 and 3-1 with the No. 2 district seed heading into the playoffs.
