GAME STORY: Colorado City battles back to sweep pair, take thrilling series from Anson

On Wednesday, in the opener of its Region I-2A semifinal series against Anson, the Colorado City softball team watched the Lady Tigers mount a late comeback to hand them a tough 10-9 loss.

On Saturday, it was the Lady Wolves’ turn to rally.

Facing elimination in Game 2, C-City built an early 7-0 lead and held off Anson from there for a series-extending 13-7 victory, before rallying from a 4-0 deficit for a 7-5 win in the deciding third to outlast the Lady Tigers in a thrilling and hard-fought series.

The victory pushed the Lady Wolves into the fifth round of the Class 2A playoffs, where they’ll take on area power Stamford for the Region I title next week.

GAME STORY: Miller, Anson bullpen pitch Tigers past Hamilton

HERMLEIGH — Anson coach Scotty Nichols called for a pitch high and wide.

Dylyn Pyle pumped a fastball right down the middle.

Hamilton’s Cole Bauman looked at it for a called strike three and Pyle slammed his glove into the ground and was mobbed by his teammates in front of the mound as the Tigers claimed the Region I-2A quarterfinal series with a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon.

GAME STORY: Sixth-inning rally lifts Anson to shocking win over Colorado City

Through the top of the sixth inning on Wednesday afternoon, every single break went the way of the Colorado City softball team in its Region I-2A semifinal opener against Anson at Abilene Christian University’s Poly Wells Field.

In the bottom half of the inning, however, all the breaks went Anson’s way and the Lady Tigers came from behind for a 10-9 win in the first game of the best-of-three series.

Whitney Wilson started the inning with a walk and Landry Overby followed with a mammoth home run to left field that cut the Lady Wolves lead to 9-6 but keyed the six-run rally.

GAME STORY: Anson rallies from Game 1 loss, takes pair to eliminate Hawley

An offensive slugfest in Game 2 of the best-of-three Region I-2A quarterfinal between Anson and Hawley gave way to a pitchers duel in the finale and saw the Lady Tigers advance to the fourth round of the playoffs.

Anson forced the deciding game with a 13-8 win before claiming the series with a 6-4 decision at Abilene Christian University’s Poly Wells Field.

The Lady Tigers advance to play the winner of the Colorado City-Ralls series. The Lady Wolves won the opening game of that series 17-4.

GAME STORY: Anson shows no rust, hammers Winters in bi-district opener

Anson baseball coach Scotty Nichols was worried that his team would show some rust from having not played for two weeks prior to Friday night’s Region I-2A bi-district opener against Winters.

Those fears were eased right off the bat.

The Tigers sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the first, scoring five times en route to a 16-0 win over the Blizzards at Abilene High’s Blackburn Field.

FEATURE: Anson’s Reagan Jones excels in classroom and athletics

For Anson girls athletic director Ryan Dollar, there’s never been a student-athlete in his career that’s quite like Reagan Jones.

Calling her “smart, athletic and friendly” was just the starting point as Jones is in the middle of a week that’s included two berths in UIL state meets and seen her lead the Lady Tigers softball team into the second round of the playoffs.

It’s not just Dollar that feels that way about the junior, either.

I don’t care who you are — even if you’re a non-fan when it comes to track and field. 

The excitement of the state meet in Austin will capture your attention if you catch sight or sound of it. It’s inescapable. 

And once per year, it is my pleasure to examine the multitude of Big Country athletes heading to Austin for the event and pick who we can expect to see on the medal stand from our area.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Clyde’s Phillips earns this week’s spotlight

In a week filled with unforgettable moments, several of our nominees handed in by area coaches could justifiably be called our Capital Farm Credit/BCP Player of the Week. 

We finally settled on Clyde sophomore Payton Phillips, who stunned attendees at the Region I-3A meet by taking gold in both the long jump (18 feet, 6 inches) and the 100 hurdles (15.12) — breaking school records that were 25 and 15 years old, respectively.

REGION II-2A TRACK RECAP: Haskell girls top Stamford for team title

SPRINGTOWN — The Haskell girls track team made a remarkable showing at the Region I-2A track meet Friday and Saturday at Porcupine Stadium, sweeping all three relays to run away with the team title.

The Maidens finished with 106 points to top second-place Stamford by 26 points, headlining an outstanding weekend for Big Country athletes and teams.

In all, area competitors accounted for 33 total metals and 26 state berths, with the bulk of those coming on the girls side of things. Big Country girls claimed 10 gold medals and eight silvers out of their 23 total medals.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Wylie senior Aguilar vaults way to honor

Kylor Aguilar’s high school athletic career has been filled with obstacles, but after beginning it with such promise as a state silver medalist as a freshman, the Wylie pole vaulter is on track to finish it in style.

Aguilar, who had his sophomore season derailed by a rare bone disorder and had his junior season shortened by the COVID-19 stoppage, is having his best high school season to date as a senior.

And after vaulting a career best 15 feet, 9 inches at the District 4-5A meet in Lubbock, he’s our Capital Farm Credit/Big Country Preps Player of the Week for the week ending April 10.

FEATURE: Experience, defense lead Anson’s state-ranked baseball team

Instead of assuming a deep playoff run with a veteran team that dropped from Class 3A to 2A prior to this season, Anson Tigers’ head coach Scotty Nichols talks about the lessons his young players learned competing in the larger classification.

Anson advanced to the second round of Class 3A playoffs in 2019 with a young team. The Tigers were anticipating an even deeper playoff run in 3A last year, but the COVID-19 pandemic stopped Texas high school sports in mid-March.

“We enjoyed our time in 3A competing against teams like Jim Ned,” Nichols said. “We learned some things in 3A. We were put into some tough situations, and we learned how to compete. It taught us a lot about ourselves and staying the course and showing perseverance.”

FEATURE: Anson’s Gallentine crashes through the 40-foot barrier in shot put

Meadow Gallentine felt confident before last week’s District 10-2A Meet.  

But even the Big Country’s top thrower was a little surprised when she surpassed the 40-feet mark, reaffirming her chances of making a trip to Austin next month.  

“When I hit 40 feet, it was such a surreal feeling,” Gallentine said. “I couldn’t believe it. I remember telling my teammates that I had it in me to throw 40 at that meet.”
