BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Jim Ned, Snyder clash in battle of unbeatens (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country picks)
LAST WEEK: 36-16, .692
OVERALL: 163-46, .779
After four straight weeks of picking 80 percent or better, the USS Ren ran aground last Friday, bottoming out with a season-low .692 percentage and dropping my season tally to .779.
I generally like to be above 80 percent by midseason, so last Friday served as a wakeup call. Actually, it was more of a gut punch. But I’ll get over it.
This week’s Big Country Preps Game of the Week will see me traveling to Snyder, where the unbeaten Class 4A Tigers will play host to 3A DI state champion Jim Ned in what should be an absolutely electric atmosphere.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Stephenville QB takes the top spot
When you combine our two key factors in selecting our Capital Farm Credit/BCP Player of the Week — quality of numbers and level of difficulty — nobody outperformed Stephenville quarterback Ryder Lambert last week in SHS’ 37-7 rout of Class 5A Abilene Wylie.
Lambert connected on 22 of 28 throws for 458 yards and five scores to help push the Yellow Jackets to 4-0.
Just four weeks in and the ‘Jackets are looking like they could win Texas’ most difficult 4A district (5-4A DI), despite having road dates with Waco La Vega and Midlothian Heritage.
District 3-2A Div. I Week 4 Report: Buffs stay unbeaten with big win over McCamey
Forsan 48, McCamey 27 — Forsan (4-0) rolled up 345 yards rushing and six TDs on the ground to hand McCamey (2-1) its first loss of the year.
Major Stockton rushed for 217 yards and four scores and threw for 96 yards and another touchdown to lead the Buffaloes, who put McCamey away with two late scores in the fourth quarter.

District 3-2A Div. I Week 3 Report: Buffs remain unbeaten with rout of Stanton
Forsan 45, Stanton 7 — The Buffaloes had an easy time with Stanton, building a 24-0 first-half lead and never looking back.
Major Stockton threw for 107 yards and a TD and rushed for 21 yards and two more scores to keep the Buffs (3-0) unbeaten. Four different Forsan players had rushing touchdowns, including Chris Mendez, who rushed for a team-high 150 yards and one score.
BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Brady cancels, Ren goes scrambling (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country Picks)

I was very much looking forward to our Big Country Preps Game of the Week – Coleman (2-0) at Brady (2-0). Unfortunately, COVID intervened by midweek, forcing a cancellation of the contest.
On a positive note, there are several other quality games throughout the area for us to focus on, and (taking a bow) the column is already hitting over 80 percent on picks and we’re only in Week 3.
Numbers of that sort are generally reserved for Weeks 7-10, so I’m feeling pressure to keep the early momentum going.
In the absence of our Game of the Week, I’ll be heading to Cross Plains on Friday, where Haskell will be paying a visit to the Buffaloes (COVID allowing, of course).

District 3-2A Div. I Week 1 Report: Haskell, McLemore open with win over Quanah
Haskell 22, Quanah 6 — Haskell (1-0) earned a win in the debut of new coach Mitch McLemore by pounding out 300 yards rushing and forcing three turnovers.
Antony Martinez rushed for 156 yards, threw for 113 and accounted for two touchdowns to lead HHS, which trailed 6-0 after the first quarter.

The 2021 football season has arrived, giving us a much-needed diversion every Friday night, in isolated spots all over Central Texas. As always, I will endeavor to pick the winner of all our area games, from Class 1A through Class 6A, with the top matchup serving as our Big Country Preps Game of the Week.
Our first spotlight game should come as no surprise, with long-time Hamlin coach Russell Lucas debuting as the head coach of the Sweetwater Mustangs — one of the most -storied programs in the Big Country.
Their opposition?
The Stephenville Yellow Jackets at Tarleton State’s Memorial Stadium.

EVAN REN: The top area games worth traveling to in 2021
Every year, one of the things I look forward to most, is mapping out the upcoming football season — charting the games I believe will have the greatest impact.
First and foremost, it’s a preseason menu for area fans who enjoy driving to some of the Big Country’s best football games on a weekly basis. Call it a football roadmap of sorts.
ANSON FEATURE: Offensive line to lead the charge for Anson in 2021
ANSON — Few teams in the Big Country have done a better job of establishing an identity than Chris Hagler’s Anson Tigers. So much so, that what often comes to mind when Anson football is mentioned is the up-tempo, attacking style of offense the Tigers have used to reach the playoffs for six straight years.
The 2021 campaign, however, may see a subtle change in terms of style at AHS. Though the tempo will remain the same, Anson will show an increased emphasis on the running game — electing to knock people over rather than throwing over the top of them.

2021 ANSON FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Tigers will take a more physical approach in 2021
ANSON — Rebuild or reload?
The 2021 season will be one or the other for an Anson team which brings back only 10 letterman from last season’s 8-3 club.
Some big questions will need to be answered after graduation claimed several key two-way players, including WR/DB Gavin Williams, RB/LB Jacob Garza, WR/DB Jacob Jenkins, WR/DB Julian Garcia and DL/OL Wyatt Whitaker.

Football is just around the corner, and we at BigCountryPreps.com are committed to bringing you the information you need to prepare for your favorite team’s season.
We’ll be releasing our Big Country Preps Preseason Football Preview, the most comprehensive look at the upcoming Big Country football season anywhere, on Saturday, Aug. 14. But you won’t have to wait until then to sate your gridiron appetite.
Leading up to the first day of fall football practice on Aug. 2, we’ll be spotlighting each 11-man team in the area and posing some of the key questions they’ll face in 2021 as part of our annual “Countdown to Two-a-Days” series.
Today, we move to Class 2A Division I with the Anson Tigers. On Wednesday we will take a look at the Colorado City Wolves, followed by the Forsan Buffaloes on Thursday.

GAME STORY: Anson falls in Game 3 to New Deal, 10-2
SEMINOLE — Through five straight innings, the Anson Tigers remained competitive with New Deal in Friday’s Region I-2A finale, despite leaving multiple runners on base and missing several opportunities that came with it.
Unfortunately for Anson, the dam eventually burst in a six-run sixth for New Deal and a 10-2 win for the Lions at Robert Ryan Baseball Field.
Noah Rodriguez was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Arric Mares was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI to lead New Deal (27-4), which advances to the Class 2A state semifinals next week in Round Rock.
Nick Miller topped the stat sheet for Anson (25-8), going 2 for 4 with a run scored.
GAME STORY: Anson, New Deal split pair to set up deciding third game
SEMINOLE — Nothing was decided after two games in the Region I-2A championship series between Anson and New Deal as the Tigers and Lions battled to a 1-1 split Thursday at Robert Ryan Baseball Field.
After New Deal outlasted Anson for a 5-3 win in eight innings in Game 1, the Tigers responded with a 5-2 victory in Game 2, forcing a deciding third game at noon Friday back in Seminole.
With its back against the wall after dropping the opener, AHS (25-7) took advantage of some timely hitting, some shaky New Deal defense and an outstanding relief effort by Dylyn Pyle to extend its season for at least one more day.
