GAME STORY: Laine, Carlton help Bulldogs clinch playoff berth with Lubbock High shutout

With the Southtown Showdown looming in two weeks, it would be easy for the Wylie football team to be caught looking ahead to the game that could provide the Bulldogs with an outright district championship.

On Friday night at Hugh Sandifer Stadium, coach Clay Martin’s squad showed that wasn’t the case as the Bulldogs hammered Lubbock High 43-0, moving to 5-3 on the season and 3-0 in District 2-5A Division II play.

The win gave the Bulldogs their highest single-season win total since moving up to Class 5A in the 2018-19 school year.

FEATURE: Senior Borho a rock in the secondary for young Wylie defense

As one of just three returning starters for a young Wylie defense, senior safety Reese Borho has had a lot on his shoulders this season.

Leaned on by coaches and teammates for both his on-field play and leadership, the 6-foot, 185-pound athlete has had to be a steadying force through some tumultuous times for a Bulldogs squad with big aspirations.

With his team sitting at 2-0 in District 2-5A Division II play after a big road win over Wichita Falls Rider last week, Borho has been up to the task thus far. And though Wylie coach Clay Martin has been impressed by the way his safety has taken to his expanded leadership role, the former longtime defensive coordinator has not been surprised by anything he’s seen out of the senior.

FEATURE: Talented Lions playing ‘Brownwood football’ as stretch run approaches

As Texas high school football legacies go, there are few programs on a par with Brownwood. Under legendary coach Gordon Wood, the Lions made getting to and winning state titles almost commonplace. From 1960 to 1981, Wood led his team to seven championships and finished second another time.

However …

Given that the last raising of the trophy occurred more than four decades ago, it certainly could be argued that what was noted in the previous paragraph is old news.

The fact is: It isn’t.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Seymour, Haskell meet in crucial district game (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country picks)

LAST WEEK: 37-7, .840
SEASON TOTAL: 333-88, .791

Aside from it being competitive on paper, our general rule of thumb when selecting our Big Country Preps Game of the Week is that it must be a home game for one of the teams in our coverage area (though we occasionally make exceptions). So for those of you wondering how high-profile matchups involving Big Country Preps teams like Stephenville at China Spring and/or Brock at Paradise are not in our top spot this week, there is your answer.

Closer to home, we’ve selected Seymour at Haskell as the best combination of importance and competitiveness, though the decision wasn’t easy. Jim Ned at Breckenridge has the potential to be very close, as does Christoval at Forsan and Hamilton at De Leon. The final determining factor was our desire to share the love. The Big Country Preps Game of the Week has yet to visit Haskell since we opened our doors in 2018 and that’s a drought we wanted over.

Here’s a look at all of this week’s top games, plus my picks on all games involving teams in our coverage area. I’ll see you on the road.

GAME STORY: Abilene High Lady Eagles snap playoff drought with Senior Night sweep

Tuesday was a memorable night for the Abilene High volleyball team.

The victory, which improved AHS to 16-19 overall and 7-4 in District 4-5A play, not only guaranteed the Lady Eagles their first postseason berth since 2015, it locked up the No. 3 seed behind second-place Wylie and district leader Lubbock Cooper once combined with Lubbock Monterey’s win over crosstown rival Cooper.

FEATURE: Vinson battles through diabetes to become one of area’s more versatile players

If you watched Jim Ned’s Avery Vinson play volleyball for the first time, you’d notice a few things about the junior.

She never comes off the court. The six-rotation standout helps the Lady Indians as an outside hitter while sharing setting duties with Kate Bryant.

She has really good hands, which is one reason she leads Jim Ned with 478 assists. She’s also a lefty, which adds another dimension to the Lady Indians’ attack.

Perhaps you’d notice the passion Vinson has for the game and how she’s become more of a leader this year.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Snyder’s Stewart takes the award after big win over Graham

Snyder quarterback Easton Stewart barely makes a dent when he steps on the scale, standing in at 5-foot-8 and only 140 pounds. But the SHS junior was plenty big enough to lead the Tigers to a 35-21 upset over Graham last week at Tiger Stadium.

Our BCP Player of the Week connected on 27 of 34 pass attempts for 282 yards and five scores and rushed for an additional 30 to lead the Tigers (3-5, 1-1) to a crucial victory.

Lubbock Cooper 11, Abilene High 8 — The Eagles outgained the Pirates 209-125 and limited Cooper to just five first downs, but it wasn’t enough to come up with a big road win.

AHS (3-5, 2-2) scored the first eight points and led 8-3 at halftime, but the Pirates got a 57-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Spruiell to Cooper Morris in the final minute of the third quarter for what proved to be the game-winning score.

FEATURE: Oznick a genuine bright spot during rebuilding year for young EHS club

Photos courtesy of Kristin Oznick

EASTLAND — Jay Oznick is barely making a blip on the media radar screen. The Eastland junior receiver, like the rest of his teammates, has been working to improve through the day-to-day challenge of a rebuilding season.

So attention has been scarce for Oznick, who has quietly put together one of the best seasons in the area, despite missing one full game and half of another with an injury.

With only a handful of seniors seeing significant playing time, the 2022 Mavericks are at the shallow end of the experience pool, with several sophomores thrust into key roles.
