A month and a half after seeing his buzzer-beating layup attempt rim out to close regulation in a double-overtime loss to North Richland Hills Richland, Abilene High senior forward Donte Cuffy got another chance to play the hero for the Eagles on Friday.

This time, he wasn’t going to be denied.

With 1.3 seconds on the clock and his team inbounding the ball from just on the other side of midcourt, Cuffy caught long pass in traffic and hit a contested leaner as time expired to lift AHS to a 59-57 upset win over Haltom City Haltom and keep the Eagles’ hopes of earning a District 3-6A playoff berth alive.
