SIX-MAN REWIND: Knox City-Newcastle lives up to billing, headlines thrilling Week 8 schedule

A stacked Week 8 slate proved to be every bit as entertaining as expected, with a couple of two-point thrillers headlining the weekend’s results.

And with almost all of our area teams in district play at this point, the outcomes continue to become more important with each passing week.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Albany’s Beal earns this week’s accolade

With the Albany Lions winning last week’s district game with Winters by a score of 60-0, there were ample opportunities for the Lions to produce a Player of the Week-worthy performance. 

They found one in senior Branson Beal, who rushed 11 times for 144 yards and five scores. He also caught a 46-yard TD pass to chart six touchdowns on the night. 

“He might have the quickest feet of any (player) I have coached,” Albany coach Denney Faith said. “Combine that with great vision it makes him fun to watch.”

DISTRICT 2-5A DIV. I WEEK 8 REPORT: Abilene High routs Lubbock High; Monterey, Coronado pick up wins

Abilene High 69, Lubbock High 14 — Tristan Beal passed for 309 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start to help the Eagles breeze to a 69-14 road win over the Westerners.

In addition to Beal’s production, Abilene High (6-2, 4-0) got big games from running back Ethan Joyner (18-137, 3 TDs rushing) and receivers Ryland Bradford (8-152, 2 TDs receiving; 2-9, 1 TD rushing) and Bryson Perez (3-80, 1 TD rushing; 5-57, 1 TD receiving) in expanding a 27-7 halftime lead to 62-7 by the start of the fourth quarter.

DISTRICT 2-5A DIV. II WEEK 8 REPORT: Cooper, Wylie pick up big wins; LCP takes care of Palo Duro

Abilene Cooper 35, Plainview 23 — The Cougars outgained the Bulldogs 364-258, overcoming a couple of bad breaks early to pull away for a comfortable victory in a must-win district home game.

Trailing 10-7 in the second quarter after a couple of mistakes in special teams on on offense, Cooper (2-6, 1-3) outscored Plainview 28-13 the rest of the way, with the Bulldogs’ final touchdown coming with three seconds remaining in the game.

DISTRICT 8-2A DIV. II WEEK 8 REPORT: Santo blows out Chico; Collinsville, Muenster ease to victory

rioSanto 42, Chico 7 — Memphis Prosser ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns on just three carries to lead the Wildcats to a 355-yard rushing effort in a blowout win over the Dragons.

Justin Hollingsworth (15-83, 1 TD), Colt Bridges (9-61, 1 TD) and Zach McPherson (7-44, 1 TD) also had productive days for Santo (4-3, 1-1), which led 28-0 by halftime.

DISTRICT 14-2A DIV. I WEEK 8 REPORT: San Saba, Mason, Holland continue winning ways

San Saba 36, Thorndale 28 — Luke Tharp rushed for 241 yards and two scores to help push San Saba past district rival Thordale. 

The win puts the Armadillos (5-2) atop the district race and sets up a possible season-ending showdown with Mason for all the marbles.

Thorndale fell to 4-3 and 0-2.

DISTRICT 6-2A DIV. II WEEK 8 REPORT: Haskell knocks off Archer City; Electra, Petrolia cruise to wins

Haskell 37, Archer City 16 — Haegen Pinkerton passed for 192 yards and ran for 128 yards and four touchdowns to help the Indians rebound from last week’s loss to Munday with a dominant effort against the Wildcats.

Montrel Johnson also had a solid day on the ground, rushing for 66 yards and a TD, while Brian Weng was Haskell’s leading receiver with 93 yards on six catches. Behind those three, the Indians () scored 16-third quarter points to stretch a 13-8 halftime lead to 29-16 by the start of the fourth quarter.

DISTRICT 5-2A DIV. I WEEK 8 REPORT: De Leon, Hico and Hamilton cruise to comfortable wins

De Leon 55, Coleman 12 — Heston Jobe passed for 150 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 60 yards and another score, while Lane Couch ran for 110 yards and two TDs to lead the Bearcats to a lopsided win over the Bluecats.

Adan Salinas (8-60, 1 TD rushing) and Christian Gilder (3-24, 2 TDs) also found the end zone on the ground for De Leon (4-3, 2-0), which got receiving scores from Lane Cooper (4-51 receiving) and Brenner Wright (1-29).

DISTRICT 10-2A DIV. II WEEK 8 REPORT:Goldthwaite falls in important district matchup vs. Bremond

Bremond 75, Goldthwaite 47 — A projected shootout between Bremond and Goldthwaite nearly delivered, but a Bremond running game that charted 420 rushing yards spoiied it. 

Sam Kasowski threw for 263 yards and five TDs and Terrence rushed for 210 yards and 210 yards to lead the Bremond effort. 

It was the third straight win for Bremond (5-2, 3-1) which ramained in title contention with the win.

DISTRICT 3-2A DIV. I WEEK 8 REPORT: Forsan runs wild in win over C-City; Ozona, Reagan County pick up victories

Forsan 55, Colorado City 22 — The Buffaloes broke into the win column in dominant fashion, rushing for 509 yards as a team in a blowout win over the Wolves.

Huston Stockton had a monster game for Forsan (1-6, 1-1), finishing with 241 yards and three TDs rushing on just 13 carries. Coy Evans (5-6-0—42, 2 TDs passing; 8-89 rushing), Brayden Cervantes (6-86, 2 TDs rushing) and Yandell Melendez (14-66, 1 TD rushing) also had productive days for the Buffs, who led 42-22 by halftime before putting the game away in the third quarter.

DISTRICT 5-3A DIV. II WEEK 8 REPORT: Brady routs Eastland; Tolar blasts Dublin

Brady 47, Eastland 7 — Johnny Menefield ran for 151 yards and three touchdowns to spearhead a 322-yard rushing effort for the Bulldogs, who dominated the Mavericks from start to finish in a blowout win.

Quarterback Sean Jacoby also had a big game for Brady (6-1, 2-0), running for 92 yards and a touchdown while passing for 82 yards and two more scores. Both touchdown throws went to Ashton Ramsey, who finished with two catches for 73 yards, while Ashton Taylor added 81 yards and a TD on the ground.

DISTRICT 3-3A DIV. I WEEK 8 REPORT: Sweetwater, Jim Ned, Clyde all score wins

Sweetwater 27, Comanche 13 — Uriah Aguilar-Rivera rushed for 121 yards and two scores as Sweetwater captured a crucial win on the road. 

The Mustangs (4-3, 2-0) are now tied with Clyde (4-3, 2-0) for the league lead. They will meet on Friday in Sweetwater. 

Comanche (4-3, 1-1) was led by Cayden Davis who threw for 116 yards and one score and rushed for 160 yards and another TD.

DISTRICT 4-4A DIV. I WEEK 8 REPORT: Stephenville, Lampasas both notch Week 8 wins.

Stephenville 63, Marble Falls 0 — The Yellow Jackets coasted to the win behind 546 yards in total offense. 

Ryan Gafford topped the stat sheet for Stephenville with 222 yards passing and four scores. 

The Yellow Jackets improved to 6-1 and 1-0 with the win; Marble Falls fell to 2-6 and 0-2.

DISTRICT 3-4A DIV. II WEEK 8 REPORT: Brock shuts out Mineral Wells; Graham blasts Bridgeport

Brock 21, Mineral Wells 0 — Brody Woods and Coty Farmer both topped the 100-yard rushing mark as the Eagles ran for 295 yards as a team in a shutout win over the Rams.

Woods, who was limited to 38 yards passing, ran for 148 yards and a touchdown, while Farmer added 118 yards and a score of his own on just eight carries. Brock (7-0, 2-0) also got an 85-yard punt return touchdown from Colt Matlock for the only points of the first half.

DISTRICT 1-4A DIV. II WEEK 8 REPORT: Fort Stockton pulls away from Snyder; Greenwood routs Monahans

Fort Stockton 41, Snyder 14 — The Panthers ran for 193 and four touchdowns while limiting the Tigers to 131 total yards to pull away in the second half for a comfortable win.

Gerry Diaz (14-61, 1 TD), Nick Almendarez (14-54, 1 TD) and Fabian Silva (9-52, 2 TDs) led the ground assault for Fort Stockton, which led just 14-7 at halftime. The Panthers (6-2, 1-1) also got 88 yards and a touchdown passing from Almendarez, while Rylan Nunez received for 67 yards and a score.

DISTRICT 4-2A DIV. I WEEK 8 REPORT: Stamford, Hawley, Cisco tally wins in Week 8

Stamford 43, Anson 0 — Christian Duran threw for 201 yards and two scores and Kason Vega rushed for 114 yards an another score to keep top-ranked Stamford (7-0, 2-0) unbeaten.

The Bulldogs led 21-0 at the break and 36-0 after three quarters. 

Limited to only 127 total yards, Anson (4-3, 0-2) was led by Corey Lane with a combined 66 yards rushing and passing.

GAME STORY: Resilient Cooper Cougars top Plainview in must-win district matchup

After starting District 2-5A Division II play at 0-3, the Cooper football team entered Friday’s home matchup against Plainview with its back against the wall.

The Cougars had to beat the Bulldogs or risk seeing their 17-year playoff streak come to an end. 

At several points throughout the night, coach Aaron Roan’s squad had its mettle tested. But time and again, the Coogs stood tall, answering every Bulldogs challenge in a 35-23 win at Shotwell Stadium.

GAME STORY: Laine’s career night, Rehburg’s walk-off field goal key Wylie to thrilling win over WF Memorial

WICHITA FALLS — Feed Julius Laine. Feed Laine again. Then feed the Wylie junior tailback some more.

As Wylie and Wichita Falls Memorial kept swapping touchdowns Friday night in a crucial District 2-5A Division II contest, the Bulldogs’ strategy became obvious. Put the ball in the hands of its 220-pound bruiser and let a worn-out Maverick defense try to stop him.

The approach worked as Laine rushed for 268 yards and four touchdowns on 36 carries, the last of which moved the Bulldogs into scoring range. Kicker Noah Rehburg did the rest, drilling a 26-yard field goal at the buzzer to give Wylie a thrilling 45-42 victory on the road at Memorial Stadium.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Roscoe runs for more than 300 yards in win over Hamlin

HAMLIN — As the temperatures outside have cooled off, the Big Country Preps Game of the Week continues to get hotter and hotter.

Heading into Friday night’s District 7-2A Division II showdown between Roscoe and Hamlin, three of the last four choices for the top area game had been one-score games.

The Plowboys and Pied Pipers nearly extended that streak, but a 29-yard field goal by Roscoe freshman David Villa with under a minute to play gave the Plowboys the cushion they needed for a 29-18 win to stay tied with Albany atop the district standings.

GAME REPORT: Beal steady, defense strong as Abilene High cruises to win at Lubbock High

LUBBOCK — Making the first start of his high school career in the absence of injured standout Brayden Henry, sophomore quarterback Tristan Beal passed for 309 yards and three touchdowns — two of those during a 21-point first quarter — to help lead Abilene High to a 69-14 win over Lubbock High on Thursday at Lowrey Field.

The Eagles also got big offensive games from running back Ethan Joyner and receivers Ryland Bradford and Bryson Perez, while their defense limited the Westerners to a single touchdown until the final 10 seconds of the game.

The thorough victory improved AHS to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in District 2-5A Division I play, putting coach Mike Fullen’s squad alone atop the league’s standings heading into regular season-ending matchups with Amarillo Tascosa and Lubbock Monterey.

SIX-MAN LOOKAHEAD: Week 8 light on games but full of intriguing matchups

With district play in full swing and most of the squads in our four-team leagues idle, we only have 23 area matchups this week. But what’s lacking in quantity is more than made up for in quality in Week 8.

With a slate full of potential thrillers at both the top and bottom of our district races, there’s plenty of action to talk about and preview.

GAME STORY: Wylie stays unbeaten in district play with hard-fought sweep of rival Cooper

Coming into Tuesday’s crosstown volleyball match between Wylie and Cooper, both teams were riding the high of a big win to close out the first half of District 4-5A play.

The Lady Bulldogs went on the road Friday to outlast Wichita Falls Memorial in a five-set marathon and take sole possession of first place in the league’s standings, while the Lady Cougars downed Wichita Falls Legacy at home to get a leg up on the district’s fourth playoff spot.

That momentum carried over to Tuesday as both teams played and competed well at Cougar Gym. But in the end, Wylie was too tough in a hard-fought 25-23, 25-19, 25-19 win.

GAME STORY: Coleman snaps long skid after rallying to top Bangs in five-set thriller

COLEMAN — The past 6½ weeks have been incredibly tough on the Coleman Bluekatt volleyball team since it beat Rotan in straight sets in tournament play.

The Bluekatts had won just six sets over the course of a 17 match losing streak — losing a dozen of them in straight sets, including a 25-11, 25-13, 25-14 match against Bangs in District 5-2A play on Sept. 28.

With their hopes of snagging a playoff berth dangling by a thread, Coleman found itself trailing the Lady Dragons 24-20 in the opening set of the rematch on Tuesday night.

What followed from there was nothing short of remarkable as the Bluekatts scored the final six points of the opening set and rallied again late for a thrilling 26-24, 16-25, 19-25, 25-19, 16-14 win to move into a tie with De Leon for the fourth and final playoff spot — setting up a crucial home match on Friday night.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Comanche’s Terrell takes this week’s award

It isn’t often that a place-kicker nails down our Big Country Preps Player of the Week, but Comanche’s Alex Terrell has done exactly that with a pressure-packed performance in a 13-10 overtime win over Jim Ned in our Game of the Week last Friday. 

Aside from hitting a game-tying 30-yard field goal to send the contest into overtime, Terrell connected on a 31-yard field goal in the extra period to give CHS the win.

DISTRICT 2-5A DIV. I WEEK 7 REPORT: Bradford leads AHS past Coronado; Amarillo High, Monterey cruise to wins

Abilene High 59, Lubbock Coronado 40 — Ryland Bradford received for 158 yards, rushed for 92 and scored five total touchdowns to lead the Eagles to a comfortable win over the Mustangs on a night when standout quarterback Brayden Henry was knocked out in the first half due to a lower-leg injury.

Sophomore Tristan Beal exceled in Henry’s absence, passing for 210 yards and two TDs, while running back Ethan Joyner also had a big game, rushing for 140 yards and two scores.

DISTRICT 2-5A DIV. II WEEK 7 REPORT: Wylie blasts Palo Duro; Lubbock Cooper routs Abilene Cooper

Wylie 70, Amarillo Palo Duro 28 — The Bulldogs dominated the Dons from start to finish, scoring at will on offense while forcing seven turnovers (six interceptions, one fumble) in a blowout win.

Wylie (5-1, 3-0) finished with 452 yards of total offense, scoring on each of its first nine possessions while adding a defensive score as well to take a 70-12 lead early in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Bear Meng passed for 186 yards and four touchdowns and added two more scores on the ground, while Julius Laine ran 94 yards and a score — all in the first half.

DISTRICT 3-4A DIV. I WEEK 7 REPORT: Big Spring rallies past Kermit; Lake View blasts Brownfield

Big Spring 49, Kermit 20 — The Steers rallied from an early 20-0 hole with 49 unanswered points to turn a three-score deficit into a lopsided win.

Quarterback AJ Yanez fueled the comeback, running for four touchdowns, including three in the first half to help Big Spring to a 29-10 halftime lead.
