COUNTDOWN TO TWO-A-DAYS: The Santo Wildcats … 35 days to two-a-days

Football is just around the corner, and we at BigCountryPreps.com are committed to bringing you the information you need to prepare for your favorite team’s season.

We’ll be releasing our Big Country Preps Preseason Football Preview, the most comprehensive look at the upcoming Big Country football season anywhere, on Wednesday, Aug. 16. But you won’t have to wait until then to sate your gridiron appetite.

Leading up to the first day of fall football practice on July 31, we’ll be spotlighting each 11-man team in the area and posing some of the key questions they’ll face in 2023 as part of our annual “Countdown to Two-a-Days” series.

We continue in Class 2A Division II with the Santo Wildcats. On Tuesday we will take a look at the Hico Tigers, followed by the Forsan Buffaloes on Wednesday.

ONE KEY STAT

  • With their 10 wins last season, the Wildcats achieved double-digit wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.

TWO NAMES TO KNOW

  • Senior QB Hut Thornton (Rushed for 1,026 yards and 12 touchdowns and passed for 426 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2022)
  • Senior OL/DL Brett Hamilton (Had 50 tackles in 2022)

THREE BURNING QUESTIONS

  • After losing 14 of their 24 lettermen from last year’s team, including eight offensive and seven defensive starters, will the Wildcats be reloading or rebuilding in 2023?
  • How big of an impact can Hut Thornton have for an inexperienced offense from his quarterback spot?
  • What kind of line play will Santo get this year after graduating most of last year’s starters on both sides of the ball?
