GAME STORY: Slow start dooms Coahoma in loss to Abernathy

COAHOMA — The Coahoma Bulldogs entered Friday’s showdown with District 4-3A Division II leader Abernathy at Bill Easterling Memorial Stadium with plenty on the line to end the regular season.

With a win, they would clinch a share of the district title for the first time since 2003 — and it would be only the third such accomplishment in the past 50 years, setting up a points differential tiebreaker with the Antelopes and Idalou to determine seeding.

The Bulldogs knew if they won by at least 14 points, they’d enter the playoffs as the top-seeded squad, while a 10-13 point win would send them into the postseason as the second seed. Anything less than that, or a loss, and Coahoma would head into the playoffs with the No. 3 seed.

In the end, it was Abernathy jumping out to a 21-point lead in the first quarter and rolling to a 49-19 win.

GAME STORY: Wylie clinches outright district title with first-ever win over Cooper

Friday was a night of firsts for the Wylie football team.

Sitting at 0-3 all time against crosstown rival Cooper heading into Friday night’s matchup at Hugh Sandifer Stadium, the Bulldogs outlasted the Cougars for a thrilling 20-10 win to claim their first victory over CHS and clinch their first outright district title as a Class 5A program.

After racing out to a 14-3 halftime lead, the Bulldogs saw their advantage cut to four points late in the third quarter. But a 76-yard touchdown hookup from KJ Long to Derrick Evans with just six minutes remaining gave Wylie a cushion, and sophomore safety Hayden Wright protected it with his last two of three fourth-quarter interceptions — both occurring in the end zone.

So it was no surprise the Indians rose to the occasion once more against Iowa Park on Thursday night with the District 3-3A Division I title on the line.

After falling behind midway through the third quarter, the Indians scored the game’s final three touchdowns to claim a 31-13 victory at Hawk Stadium.

BCP GAME OF THE WEEK: Cisco, Hawley clash in long-awaited season finale for district championship (w/Evan Ren’s Big Country picks)

LAST WEEK: 42-11, .792
SEASON TOTAL: 421-105, .800

It never ceases to amaze me how fast the regular season passes by in high school football. And here we are again — Week 11, Halloween behind us and Turkey Day right around the corner.

Heading into this final week, the column is barely clinging to an .800 percentage, which unless it gets better, is one of the worst pick years I’ve had in the last decade.

However, this is ample time to close with a flurry, given that the second season (the Texas high postseason) gets underway next week.

Let’s dive in.

Here’s this week’s forecast.

GAME STORY: Honeybees open playoffs with sweep of Estacado

As one of the top teams in Region I-4A, the Stephenville Honeybees hoped that Tuesday’s bi-district playoff matchup with Lubbock Estacado would be over fairly quickly.

The District 6-4A champions ensured that with a 25-11, 25-6, 25-11 sweep of the Lady Matadors at Abilene Christian University’s Moody Coliseum, ending Estacado’s return to the postseason after a 25-year drought in an emphatic way.
