AMARILLO — Abilene High couldn’t keep pace with Amarillo Tascosa on Friday, falling 36-14 to the Rebels at Dick Bivins Stadium.
The Eagles, who were outgained 440-145 for the game, trailed 29-7 by halftime and were never able to recover in falling to 2-4 on the season and 1-1 in District 2-5A Division I play.
Tayden Barnes rushed for a game-high 215 yards and four touchdowns — all the in the first half — to keep Tascosa (5-1, 2-0) perfect in league action.
STEPHENVILLE — Brownwood hung with archrival Stephenville for a half Friday, but ultimately the Yellow Jackets were just too much for the visiting Lions in a 42-21 win at Memorial Stadium.
After the teams went to halftime tied at 14, SHS outscored Brownwood 21-0 in the third quarter before scoring on the first play of the fourth to turn what had been a tightly contested game into a four-touchdown lead and a lopsided victory.
BHS was only outgained 417-384, rushing for 155 yards to the Yellow Jackets’ 149. But the Lions were hurt by three turnovers — two during Stephenville’s big third quarter.
SANTO — The Santo Wildcats had every opportunity to fold the tent in their district opener on Friday night, trailing traditional power Muenster 17-7 with 11:19 to play.
Santo however, used a couple of big plays, a big night from Hut Thornton and two fourth-quarter scores to rally with a 21-17 win in the Big Country Preps Game of the week.
Thornton rushed 20 times for 183 yards and a score and Jamie Sandoval scored the game-winner from 41 yards out to lead the Wildcats (5-0, 1-0 District 8-2A DII), who are now in the district driver’s seat after knocking off the league favorite.
WALL — The numbers looked more like a team playing its first game of the year than a squad halfway through the regular season, but in the end it didn’t matter as Wall knocked off Mason 14-6 in nondistrict action Friday Night at Clayton Weishuhn Field.
The Hawks had 10 fumbles, losing four, while also throwing an interception, but it was Briggs Jones who came up with the play of the night to help Wall improve to 4-1.
After a Mason timeout with the Hawks kneeling to close out the game, Wall had its ninth fumble of the night with under 30 seconds left to give the Punchers possession at the WHS 26-yard line.
Jones then picked up his second interception in as many drives to seal the win.
