COUNTDOWN TO TWO-A-DAYS: Goldthwaite Eagles

Football is just around the corner, and we at BigCountryPreps.com are committed to bringing you the information you need to prepare for your favorite team’s season.

We’ll be releasing our Big Country Preps Preseason Football Preview, the most comprehensive look at the upcoming Big Country football season anywhere, on Wednesday, Aug. 17. But you won’t have to wait until then to sate your gridiron appetite.

Leading up to the first day of fall football practice on Aug. 1, we’ll be spotlighting each 11-man team in the area and posing some of the key questions they’ll face in 2022 as part of our annual “Countdown to Two-a-Days” series.

We stay in Class 2A Division I with the Goldthwaite Eagles. On Sunday we will take a look at the San Saba Armadillos, followed by the Ballinger Bearcats on Monday.

GOLDTHWAITE EAGLES

LAST YEAR’S RECORD

  • 5-6 overall, 3-2 District 4-2A Division I

ONE KEY STAT

  • Goldthwaite outscored its opponents 273-257 in 2021, marking the first season since 2016 that the Eagles finished with a positive point differential.

TWO NAMES TO KNOW

  • Senior OL/DL AJ McCoy (Had 19 pancakes while tallying 57 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 sack and 1 forced fumble in 2021)
  • Senior RB/DB Carsyn Campbell (Had 282 yards rushing and 67 tackles in 2021)

THREE BURNING QUESTIONS

  • What kind of changes will first- year Goldthwaite head coach Andy Howard bring to the Eagles program?
  • Can line units led by AJ McCoy, Quentin Oosthuizen and Hayden Fletcher be a strength for GHS?
  • What impact will call-ups from an 8-2 junior varsity team have on an Eagles squad that returns just eight lettermen, including five starters on both sides of the ball?
