COUNTDOWN TO TWO-A-DAYS: Haskell Indians

Football is just around the corner, and we at BigCountryPreps.com are committed to bringing you the information you need to prepare for your favorite team’s season.

We’ll be releasing our Big Country Preps Preseason Football Preview, the most comprehensive look at the upcoming Big Country football season anywhere, on Wednesday, Aug. 17. But you won’t have to wait until then to sate your gridiron appetite.

Leading up to the first day of fall football practice on Aug. 1, we’ll be spotlighting each 11-man team in the area and posing some of the key questions they’ll face in 2022 as part of our annual “Countdown to Two-a-Days” series.

We continue in Class 2A Division II with the Haskell Indians. On Monday we will take a look at the Santo Wildcats, followed by the Hico Tigers on Tuesday.

HASKELL INDIANS

LAST YEAR’S RECORD

  • 4-7 overall, 2-3 in District 3-2A Division I

ONE KEY STAT

  • Haskell has had one winning season since 2009, going 7-4 in 2015. The Indians have averaged 3.7 wins in the six season since.

TWO NAMES TO KNOW

  • Senior RB/WR Marquise Johnson (Rushed for 566 yards and 8 touchdowns and received for 145 yards in 2021)
  • Senior TE Cory Mathis (Received for 338 yards and four touchdowns in 2021)

THREE BURNING QUESTIONS

  • With 17 lettermen returning, including seven starters on both sides of the ball, how big of a step forward will Haskell take in Mitch McLemore’s second season?
  • Who will play quarterback for the Indians and how will he handle the role?
  • Can the Haskell defense make significant improvement on the 29.3 points it allowed per game last fall?
