HAMLIN — Basketball took a back seat Friday night at Piper Court and for good reason.

For the second time in five years, Hamlin assistant girls basketball coach Kelly Jeffrey, 56, is fighting cancer, and the prognosis is not good.

What started off as breast cancer has since spread to Jeffrey’s brain, and the communities of Hamlin and Aspermont banded together to support the veteran coach of 32 years — 23 of which have been spent in Hamlin.
