Abilene High, Cooper baseball teams reboot costume scrimmage (w/ photo gallery, video interviews)

The Abilene High and Cooper baseball tams took to Abilene Christian University’s Crutcher Scott Field on Saturday for their second costume scrimmage in as many years, infusing a little light-hearted fun into the crosstown rivalry.

The game, which began last year as a charity event to raise money for the Abilene Police Department’s K-9 unit, was used to benefit the Play For Rex Foundation this year. In all, more than $1,200 was raised for the organization, which was created to help improve the lives of pediatric cancer patients.

Cooper coach Cody Salyers, who helped come up with the idea for and organize the costume scrimmage last year with then-AHS coach Ryan Lewis, said he hopes the event will become an annual tradition that will continue to grow and raise more and more money for local causes.
