GAME STORY: Merkel girls, boys sweep Anson (w/photo gallery, box scores, video)

MERKEL — Though Merkel High School didn’t run a “Defensive Night” promotion for Friday’s doubleheader with Anson, it could have.

Sweeping AHS in a girls/boys doubleheader at the MHS gym, Merkel took the girls game 54-24 behind a stifling effort on the defensive end. The Merkel Boys completed the sweep in Game 2 (38-21), compensating for cold early shooting by limiting the Tigers to just seven first-half points.

The lesson on defense, however, began in the girls game, during which the Lady Badgers forced Anson into double-digit turnovers before halftime.

Kaydi Pursley tossed in 20 points, including two 3-pointers and Aluanna White added eight more to lead Merkel (14-8, 3-1 District 5-3A), which took control of the game with a 19-3 run in the final five minutes of the first quarter.

Leading 23-9 heading into the second period, Merkel ended the competitive phase of the game with a 15-3 run over the next eight minutes to carry an overwhelming 38-12 advantage into the break.

Anson (10-9, 0-3), which was held scoreless over the final five minutes of the half, was led by Reagan Jones with eight points and Gracie Feagan with seven.

Aside from its defensive effort, Merkle dominated the glass as well, finishing with a 41-19 rebounding edge that included a whopping 24 offensive boards.

“I felt like our defense was the big difference in the game today,” Merkel girls coach Laura Lange said. “We pressed them really hard and I thought the girls did a really good job forcing turnovers.

“It was high-energy, high-intensity defense.”

Badgers dominate Tigers, stay perfect in 5-3A

Defense was again the predominant factor in the night cap, though it took a bit longer for a cold-shooting Merkel boys team to exploit it.

Leading 7-2 at the end of the first quarter, MHS exploded with a 19-5 run to close the half with a decisive 26-7 lead.

Tryce Pape scored 12 points, while Dillon Davis and Slade Stone added seven each to lift the Badgers (10-4, 2-0), who trailed for a grand total of 57 seconds after Anson scored the game’s first bucket.

Merkel never allowed Anson to score more than eight points in a quarter and maintained a double-digit lead from the 7:40 mark of the second quarter until the final buzzer.

Anson fell to 5-9 overall and 0-2 in league play.

“We’ve been working a lot on our defensive lately,” Merkel coach BC Lee said. “We’ve really been harping on the defensive end.

“We know we can go and score, but we struggled tonight shooting and our defense definitely stepped up and did the job for us.”
