EVAN REN: Sunday odds and ends (Eastland, Westbrook and a dash of COVID)

There’s something dangerous brewing in Eastland County, and I’m not referring to COVID.

When a short-handed Eastland High team started the season off at 0-3, the Mavericks may have looked like a train wreck on paper to someone monitoring the scores from across the state.

But those of us who keep track of area football knew better. The combination of an early discipline issue and an outbreak of COVID had left the Mavericks with a skeleton crew and they took the beatings to prove it.

They are now making up for lost time.

GAME STORY: Eastland girls rebound to eliminate Peaster (w/ video, box scores; photo gallery to come late tonight)

GLEN ROSE — A day removed from an 8-3 beating at the hands of Peaster in Game 1 of a Region I-3A area-round series, the Eastland Lady Mavericks were faced with two options on Saturday: either find away to stage a remarkable turnaround or begin their offseason in early May.

Somehow, EHS managed the former — not once, but twice in a sweep of Games 2 and 3 on Saturday at Glen Rose High School.

Brynna Foster tossed a total of 17 innings and earned two complete-game victories to lead the Lady Mavs, who topped Peaster 2-1 in 10 innings to tie the series and 3-2 in Game 3 to end it.

GAME STORY: Pirate defense pushes Eula into regional semifinals (video, box score and photo gallery w/37 images included)

EASTLAND — The Eula Pirates may have been a bit streaky on the offensive side in Tuesday’s Region III-1A quarterfinal with Huckabay. But coach Josh Fostel’s crew made up for it with a wire-to-wire defensive effort in a 60-26 win at Eastland High School.

Cade Smith scored 17 points while Dakota Boles and Matthew Booth added 11 each to pace the 11th-ranked Pirates (28-6), who now push on to the Region III-1A tournament, where they will meet No. 6 Slidell at 5 p.m. Friday in Mansfield.
