BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Wylie junior takes the top spot

Wylie junior Haddie Mock was at her very best against difficult competition last week, helping the Lady Bulldogs to wins over seventh-ranked 3A Bushland (25-8) and 21st-ranked 4A Stephenville last week.

Mock finished a whopping combined total of 19 blocks in the two matches to help the Lady Bulldogs improve to 24-7. She also had 16 combined kills.

CHS in the meantime, finished with 268 total yards, led by Austin Joslin, who threw for 167 yards and two TDs.

Coahoma improved to 4-0 with the win.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Wall defense sets the tone in 24-0 win over Jim Ned

TUSCOLA — With all the press coverage garnered by the Wall offense in recent weeks, the Hawks dished out a stark reminder during Friday’s Big Country Preps Game of the Week: They can play a little defense too.

Handing Jim Ned a 24-0 loss on its homefield, the third-ranked Class 3A DII Hawks limited the Indians to 153 total yards (including 20 yards rushing on 26 carries) and just eight first downs to get the win.

FEATURE: Wall’s wide receivers excelling in spread offense

Reid Robertson

When Craig Slaughter took over at Wall less than two years ago, he knew what needed to happen.

The Hawks had some special players coming through their football program. And Slaughter wanted those guys to get the ball in space.

While quarterback Landon York has generated his fair share of headlines, York has benefitted from a strong collection of receivers led by seniors Reid Robertson, Kellen Oliver and Hagyn Barbee.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Wall takes on Jim Ned in battle of unbeatens

LAST WEEK: 53-15, .780
SEASON TOTAL: 107-29, .787

This week’s Big Country Preps Game of the Week, Wall at Jim Ned, has a checkmark in most of the key boxes.

A high-profile game? Check. A battle of unbeatens? Check. A rivalry game? Check. A game of importance? Check, yes, check —even for a non-district game. Is a large crowd expected? Check.

So even during a week where there are multiple matchups of interest in our area, the spotlight game was relatively easy to select.

Here’s this week’s Big Country Football Forecast. I’ll see you on the road.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS NOTEBOOK: Wall, Jim Ned have “value game” approaching

Craig Slaughter

Some people like to write off the non-district portion of their football schedules, labeling it as meaningless. Some people even like to refer to it as “preseason.”

Well, that’s a misnomer.  Preseason games are known as scrimmages.

Nondistrict games count on your official record, they are part of players’ season statistics, they contribute to our state records, they influence statewide rankings and like it or not, many of them are quite important.

I’ll give you a prime example.

Friday in Tuscola, our Big Country Preps Game of the Week will feature the Wall Hawks (2-0) facing Jim Ned (2-0) in a contest that doesn’t mean a thing in terms playoff seeding. Yet it will mean a great deal for both teams to prep for what they hope will be lengthy playoff runs.

DISTRICT 4-3A DIV. II WEEK 2 REPORT: Merkel, Coahoma, Wall, Grape Creek all victorious

Merkel 29, Bangs 26 — The Badgers are off to a 2-0 start following their narrow win over Bangs on Friday.

Easton Malone threw for 157 yards and four scores to lead Merkel, which earned the win with only 235 yards in total offense.

Bangs (0-2) was led by Jason Tidwell, who rushed for 183 yards and two scores.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Comanche senior crosses 500-kill milestone while helping CHS to tourney win

Photo provided by Randy Day

Milestones catch our eye when selecting our Big Country Preps Player of the Week, as do great weekly performances. But when both occur at the same time, you can rest assured that player will be in the running for the top spot.

This week the spotlight goes to Comanche senior outside hitter J’Lee Salinas, who not only helped the Maidens to the Heart of Texas Tournament Championship in Brownwood, but she also hit the 500-kill milestone in process.

DISTRICT 4-3A DIV. II WEEK 1 REPORT: Merkel opens with surprising win at Ballinger

Merkel 38, Ballinger 26 — Sophomore standout Easton Malone threw for 319 yards and four scores as Merkel stunned Ballinger on the road to snap a 10-game losing streak.

Malone, who also rushed for 26 yards and another score, hit six different receivers, including six passes to Kaden Blubaugh for 190 yards and four scores.

Merkel’s last win came on Nov. 3 of 2023 in a season finale at home against Millsap (41-20).

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Wall crushes Mason in lightning-delayed season opener

WALL — While Mother Nature wasn’t cooperative for the Wall Hawks before their season-opener with Mason on Friday, a lightning delay of more than an hour didn’t appear to hurt WHS’ efficiency.

The Hawks rolled up 409 yards in total offense while limiting the Punchers to only 208 in a 48-7 rout at Hawk Stadium in the Big Country Preps Game of the Week.

Landon York threw for 168 yards and three scores while four different Hawk running backs found the end zone to highlight the Wall offensive effort.

“A great win,” Wall coach Craig Slaughter said. “We got out of it healthy, it’s a great start, the snowball is rolling and let’s get ready for next week against the Brownwood Lions.”

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Wall plays host to Mason in BCP Game of the Week

LAST WEEK: 0-0, .000
SEASON TOTAL: 0-0, .000

I can scarcely believe it, but it’s that time again — time to begin taking a weekly look at high school football games in our area, making my choice for BCP Game of the Week and doing my level best to pick the winners.

Last year (after a dreadful start), this column hit with more than an 80 percent accuracy for the season. But I’d rather not be forced to overcome the early handicap again.

Enough small talk.

Let’s dive into the 2025 season, shall we?

WALL FEATURE: Talented QB York has big encore planned after breakout junior season

Heading into the 2024 season, Wall coach Craig Slaughter knew he had something special at the quarterback position. But because then-junior Landon York had yet to take a varsity snap, he had to temper his enthusiasm in preseason interviews.

Over the following four months, area football fans and opposing coaches would learn what Slaughter already knew but wasn’t ready to share for fear of putting additional pressure on his first-year starting QB: That York kid is the real deal.

Kicking off his varsity career with the added responsibility of helping Wall transition from the flexbone triple option to a pass-heavy spread attack, the strong-armed signal caller completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 3,767 yards and 48 touchdowns to just seven interceptions. In the process, he led the Hawks to the Class 3A Division II state semifinals — cementing his place as one of the state’s most prolific returning quarterbacks in any classification.

2025 WALL FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Hawks out to build on last year’s run to state semis

Craig Slaughter’s first year as Wall’s head football coach was a rousing success. The Hawks went 13-2 and pushed three-time defending state champion Gunter deep into the fourth quarter before eventually seeing their season end in the Class 3A Division II state semifinals.

Entering Year 2 with a strong core back from that squad, the former WHS defensive coordinator and current head man is hoping for even bigger things this fall.

For that goal to be achieved, the Hawks will need to successfully rebuild a defense that returns just four starters. But an offense that brings back seven regulars could be even better than the version that averaged 42.2 points per game in its first year running the spread.

Our All-Big Country Preps Softball and Baseball Teams, released Saturday and Sunday, respectively, are in place to honor those who achieved the most on-field success in 2025. It is off the field, however, where character, grit, and work ethic are often measured. And it is with our Big Country Preps All-Hustle Team that we wish to honor those players, male and female, who were (simply put) the hardest-working, best teammates in the area this spring.

This team isn’t about who the best baseball and softball players were.

The All-Hustle team honors effort, discipline, toughness, coachability and selflessness — traits that coaches wish they had in every player and upon which championships are built.

It is for that reason that this team is largely selected by area coaches and described in their own words.

Big Country Preps is now honored to present these individuals to you — the best team players (boys and girls) that the Big Country had to offer during the 2025 season.

The players below are listed in no particular order.

GAME STORY: Wall blasts Thrall 14-2 to claim program’s second state championship

ROUND ROCK — In 2023, with a number of their current upperclassmen filling contributing roles, the Wall Hawks reached the Class 3A state title game only to watch another team (Boyd) leave with the championship trophy.

Last year, with a loaded roster and expectations of a Round Rock return, WHS saw its season end in a shocking area-round loss to Iowa Park.

On Thursday, with both of those experiences serving as competitive fuel, coach Jeremy Gordon’s squad left nothing to chance against Thrall, using a four-run first inning to set a tone it would maintain for five dominant innings on its way to a 14-2 win in the Class 3A Division II state championship game at Dell Diamond.

The victory capped a brilliant 31-6 campaign for the Hawks, who claimed their second state title in their fourth state trip, joining the 2019 squad as the only other Wall team to leave Round Rock with state gold around its neck.

GAME STORY: Wall heading to Dell Diamond after series-clinching win over Boyd

STEPHENVILLE — It’s Wall versus Thrall for all the marbles.

A 6-2 win for the Hawks over Boyd in Game 3 of a Class 3A DII State semifinal secured this matchup for the Hawks (30-6), who will meet Thrall (39-7-1) for the state championship at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.

Reid Ballard was 1 for 3 with a double and three RBIs and earned the win on the hill to lead Wall (30-6), which jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and held the Yellowjackets at bay for the rest of the afternoon at the Tarleton State Baseball Complex

GAME STORY: Boyd uses big sixth inning to pull away from Wall in Game 2, force do-or-die Game 3

STEPHENVILLE — Hoping to close out Boyd with a sweep after downing the Yellowjackets 6-1 in the opener of its Class 3A Division II state semifinals series on Thursday, the Wall baseball team saw one bad inning eliminate that possibility in Friday’s Game 2 at the Tarleton Baseball Complex.

Trailing just 4-3 after 5½ innings with the top of their lineup due up in the seventh, the Hawks surrendered five runs in the bottom of the sixth, turning a game that was nip and tuck to that point into a 9-3 loss.

The outcome, which forces a deciding third game at 4 p.m. Saturday back at Tarleton State University, spoiled a strong start from junior left-hander Kellan Oliver, who went toe-to-toe with Boyd ace Will McIntire for five innings before handing the game over to the bullpen in the sixth.

GAME STORY: Wall overcomes shaky start to take Game 1 from Boyd, moves within win of trip to Round Rock

ABILENE — Before this week, the last memory any Wall baseball player had of playing Boyd was watching the Yellowjackets celebrate a 6-4 win over their team in the 2023 Class 3A state championship game.

On Thursday, the Hawks took a big step toward replacing that memory with a more pleasant one, downing BHS 6-1 in the opener of a best-of-three Class 3A Division II state semifinals series at Abilene Christian University’s Bullock Brothers Ballpark.

Playing for an opportunity to return to Dell Diamond in Round Rock for the fourth time in program history — all since 2017 — Wall overcame a slow start, answering a one-run top of the first by Boyd with two runs in the home half of the inning. And junior ace Gage Reichenau handled the rest, shutting the Yellowjackets out the rest of the way to put his team in position to close out the series when it resumes at 7 p.m. Friday at Tarleton State University in Stephenville.

GAME STORY: Wall completes sweep of Jacksboro with 2-0 win at Brownwood

BROWNWOOD — The game was sufficiently well-pitched that there were no extra base hits and a combined 19 strikeouts between the two starting hurlers.

So after the Wall Hawks managed to scratch home a pair of runs in Game 2 of the Region I-3A DII title series on Saturday, a 2-0 lead looked a lot bigger in person than it did on paper.  In fact, it held up for a series-clinching 2-0 win for the Hawks to push them into the 3A DII state semifinals.

Reid Ballard scattered six Jacksboro singles over six innings with 11 Ks and Kellan Oliver picked up a save on the hill after going 1 for 2 at the plate with a run scored to lead Wall (28-5) which will face Boyd in the state semis with a chance to advance to the title game.

Jacksboro (24-6) was led by southpaw starter Cannon Valenzuela, who allowed two runs (both earned) with five walks and eight strikeouts.

GAME REPORT: Reichenau’s gem, late offensive flurry fuels Wall past Jacksboro in series opener

GRAHAM — Locked in a pitcher’s duel that could have gone either way for six innings, the Wall baseball team finally broke through in the seventh Friday, scoring five runs off Jacksboro starter Wyatt Gavit to pull away for a 6-1 win in the opener of its best-of-three Region I-3A Division II championship series against the Tigers.

The Hawks, who trailed 1-0 after four innings at the Graham High School Baseball Field, had five of their 13 hits during the late scoring barrage, giving ace Gage Reichenau the run support needed to finish off a complete-game two-hitter with a win.

The victory puts Wall one victory away from advancing to the state semifinals with the series set to resume at 3 p.m. Saturday in Brownwood.

GAME STORY: Reichenau’s dominant performance on the mound leads Wall to win over Henrietta

EULA — Postseason flips in the area round have not been kind to Wall baseball coach Jeremy Gordon during his two years leading the Hawk program.

In both 2024 and 2025, Gordon lost the flip to decide if they would have a single-game playoff or a best-of-three series as well as the flip to decide who would be the home and visiting team.

After falling to Iowa Park last year, Gordon’s team ensured that their season wouldn’t end at the hands of another District 7 team, beating Henrietta 4-2 on Thursday night at Pirate Field behind the strong pitching of Gage Reichenau.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Gordon’s Stryker Reed takes our final accolade of 2024-25 school year

As our tradition dictates, we close the books on our Big Country Preps Player of the Week on the first Monday following the UIL State Track and Field Championships in Austin.

And more often than not, our final award of the school year goes to someone who scored big at the state capital.

This year is no exception, with Gordon’s Stryker Reed taking the award after helping GHS win the boys team state championship, setting two individual state records and helping to set a new relay mark in the process.

GAME STORY: Wall softball takes thrilling 11-inning win before falling to Jacksboro in Game 3

ABILENE — The Wall Lady Hawks showed up to Wylie’s Bulldog Field on Saturday expecting to have a long day of softball after dropping the opening game of their best-of-three Region I-3A Division II area-round series with Jacksboro 17-6 on Friday night.

Nobody expected the Lady Hawks and Tigerettes to wind up playing 18 innings in one day.

Wall took a 6-5 win in 11 innings in Game 2 before Jacksboro rebounded with a 10-5 win to clinch the series and earn a date with Muleshoe next week.

STATE TRACK ROUNDUP: Brownwood girls claim team title; Wall boys narrowly miss out

Cover photo courtesy Brian Hodnett

AUSTIN — The 2025 UIL state track and field meet got underway on Thursday at the University of Texas’ Mike A. Myers Track & Soccer Stadium, and the Big Country is bringing home some hardware.

The Brownwood Lady Lions made the most of their trip to Austin, claiming the Class 4A girls team championship on the strength of their three relays.

The Wall boys came “painfully close” in the words of track coach Craig Slaughter to giving the Big Country Preps area a second team title as the Hawks’ 64 points left them just two points behind Holliday in the Class 3A boys team standings.

Even so, Slaughter said that Wall’s relay teams, both boys and girls, all set personal records in an “incredible day.”

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brock’s Mylee Cedillo takes this week’s accolade with two doses of late-game heroics

If one is to play the role of hero, there’s not a better time to do it than in postseason play in your senior year.

Brock’s Mylee Cedillo lived that experience — not once, but twice in last week’s uber-intense bi-district series with fifth-ranked Levelland that saw the Lady Eagles edge the Loboettes 2-1 and 7-6 in 13 innings.

It all began Friday night in Game 1, with Levelland pitcher Aubrey Rivas carrying a no-hitter and a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning. Cedillo responded to the pressure with an RBI double to drive home both Lily Springstead (who walked) and courtesy runner Emily Faddis (running for Ali Coleman who reached on an error) to give Brock a 2-1 win.
