FEATURE: Jayton basketball coaches team up to fuel historic postseason

It’s never easy being a coach when your team is in the postseason and you’re having to work to scout opponents, set up potential playoff sites (for a game that may not even happen), come to an agreement on which chapter of officials to use while worrying about the X’s and O’s on the court.

While bigger schools tend to have a staff of 3-4 coaches that ease the pressure felt, at the Class 1A level, it’s often just the head coach and a single assistant that have to juggle everything — including travel and lodging.

That’s where Jayton-Girard ISD is bucking the trend with the coaching staffs of the boys and girls basketball teams.

GAME STORY: Eula girls pull away for 40-30 win over rival Hermleigh, punch ticket to state semis

LUBBOCK — Around this time last year, Eula coach Josh Fostel was lamenting a difficult region championship loss to Westbrook and hoping his then-young Pirates would get another chance to play for a state semifinal berth in 2025.

On Friday, the Lady Pirates got that opportunity, and they made the most of it with a workmanlike 40-30 win over regional rival Hermleigh at Lubbock Christian University’s Rip Griffin Center.

Trailing 14-8 after a quarter and 17-14 at halftime, EHS found itself in the opposite situation it was in last year against Westbrook, when the Lady Pirates held a 24-19 halftime lead that it would stretch to nine points by the opening minute of the final period. But Fostel’s team hit its stride after the break, outscoring the Lady Cardinals 12-5 in the third quarter and 14-8 in the fourth to pull away for an emotional win and earn the program’s first trip to the state semis since 1983.

GAME STORY: Jayton pulls away late to win showdown with Gordon

ABILENE — In a matchup that had been anticipated over the 65 days since Jayton and Gordon both claimed Class 1A state championships at AT&T Stadium in football, the two met up on the hardwood Friday night at Wylie’s Bulldog Gymnasium to see who would be headed to the Region II-1A Division II semifinals.

The game — and crowd — more than lived up to the hype.

Tied after the first and second quarters in front of a standing room only crowd of more than 1,400 people, No. 1-ranked Jayton’s offense got hot while the defense smothered the third-ranked Longhorns in the fourth quarter as the Jaybirds took a 51-34 win and punched their ticket to the third round.

GAME STORY: Big third quarter fuels Hamlin to thrilling 50-48 win over Eula in area round

MERKEL — The Hamlin boys basketball team trailed 27-14 at halftime and was outscored in three of the four quarters Thursday in its Region II-1A area-round matchup with Eula. But a huge third period was enough to lift the Pied Pipers to a thrilling 50-48 victory over the Pirates at Badger Gym.

Coming out of the break on a mission, coach Christopher Harvey’s squad needed less than two minutes to erase the 13-point gap. And after pulling ahead by as many as nine points (39-30 with 2:31 remaining in the third quarter), HHS took a 39-34 lead into the final period.

Eula, which trailed by eight on two occasions in the fourth quarter, rallied to tie the game twice in the final two minutes — the last time with just under 40 seconds remaining. But a putback layup by Kyson McGee with about four seconds to play allowed the Pipers to escape with the hard-fought win and earn a region semifinal matchup with the winner of Friday’s contest between Garden City and Rankin.

GAME STORY: Munday’s big night behind the arc sends Moguls past Westbrook

CLYDE — With three lead changes in the first quarter, Thursday’s Region II-1A Division I area-round matchup between Munday and Westbrook was shaping up to be an instant classic at Bulldog Gym.

Withstanding a 7-0 run by the Wildcats, the Moguls took the lead with a banked-in 3-pointer by Jariyis Williams to end the first quarter and rolled to a 48-36 win.

Caisen Lee had a game-high 18 points for Munday while Williams added 15 points.

GAME STORY: Jayton girls continue magical run with regional semifinal win over Blackwell

ABILENE — While it’s been hard to find any coaches in love with the new split division postseason format in basketball, Jayton’s Kevin Chisum isn’t one that is upset by it anymore.

After continually telling his team that they’re “not supposed to be here,” Chisum has the Lady Jays one win away from their fourth trip to the state semifinals after a 49-36 win over Blackwell on Tuesday night at Abilene Christian University’s Moody Coliseum.

Up next for the Lady Jays is No. 18 Irion County, and Chisum says that his team will take full advantage of having a couple of days to recover from a physical game that the old playoff format didn’t allow for.

GAME STORY: No. 3 Gordon opens playoffs with 92-42 win over Hermleigh; top-ranked Jayton looms next

ABILENE — Less than a year removed from its first state tournament appearance in program history, the third-ranked Gordon boys basketball team kicked off its pursuit of a return trip to San Antonio with a dominating performance in its playoff opener Tuesday at Wylie’s Bulldog Gym.

Leading Hermleigh just 17-15 after one quarter, the Longhorns outscored the Cardinals 51-14 over the next two periods to cruise to a comfortable 92-42 win in their Region II-1A Division II bi-district game and earn an area-round matchup later this week against the defending Class 1A state champion and top-ranked Jayton Jaybirds.

Aiden Shank poured in a game-high 25 points while Ry Reed followed with 20 to lead GHS, which got scoring from 10 of the 11 players who played Tuesday on its way to the lopsided victory.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Stamford softballer takes the top spot

For two years, Stamford’s Emma Follis has been one of our area’s elite softball players, both as a pitcher and a hitter. 

Last week, Follis picked up right where she left off a year ago, notching a 3-1 record in the circle with 35 strikeouts at the Slaton Tournament. 

She was even better at the plate, hitting .714 with a triple, four homers and nine RBIs. 

At this rate her numbers could be staggering by season’s end. And keep in mind, many of these games were shortened to accommodate the tournament schedule. 

In several shortened games Emma came out hot in the circle and at the plate,” coach Sean Slavis said. “We are pumped to finally be playing again!”

GAME STORY: Aspermont outlasts Gordon for thrilling win in wild Region II-1A DII area matchup

TUSCOLA — In a thrilling game of wild runs and momentum swings, it was the Aspermont Lady Hornets who had the last and most important one Thursday night, outlasting Gordon for a 43-42 win in a region II-1A Division II area-round matchup at Jim Ned’s Bill Thornton Arena.

AHS, which trailed by as many as seven points early in the third quarter, closed the game on a 9-4 run over the final 3½ minutes to rally for the victory in the hotly contested matchup that saw a pair of ties and five lead changes in the second half.

The gritty win earned the Lady Hornets (25-7) a trip to the region semifinals, where they’ll face off with with No. 18 Irion County (29-6) next week, while the young Lady Longhorns saw their season end at 22-12.

GAME STORY: Hamlin rallies past Knox City for first playoff win in over a decade

STAMFORD — In 2012, London hosted the Summer Olympics for the third time, NASA landed a rover on Mars and Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Diamond Jubilee.

It was also the last time the Hamlin girls basketball team had won a playoff game — prior to the Lady Pipers rallying in the fourth quarter for a 43-32 win over Knox City on Monday at Bulldog Gymnasium in a Region II-1A Division I bi-district matchup.

It was freshman Kinzlee Gruben’s 3-pointer off a turnover with 27 seconds left in the third quarter, with Hamlin down 28-24, that got the rally started.

GAME STORY: Aspermont uses fast start to cruise to bi-district win over Crowell

STAMFORD — If there is a year for the Aspermont girls basketball team to get over the area-round hump of the postseason, this could be the year that the Lady Hornets break through.

AHS picked up its fifth consecutive win in the bi-district round of the playoffs on Monday night with a 57-31 rout of Crowell to open the Region II-1A Division II postseason, marking the second consecutive year that Aspermont opened the playoffs with a win over the Lady Wildcats.

Now, with the split divisions, the Lady Hornets will face someone other than Hermleigh or Highland as they look to make a return to the second week of the postseason for the first time since the 2019-20 season.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Comanche’s Alex Terrell takes this week’s spotlight

While it wasn’t a perfect two-game stretch for the Comanche boys basketball team, the Indians did clinch a postseason berth last week and one of their players earned the spotlight. 

Comanche went 1-1 on the week, dropping a game against Tolar while securing a playoff spot Friday with a win over Breckenridge. In the meantime, senior guard Alex Terrell came up with two big efforts to capture our Big Country Preps Player of the Week. 

Terrell put up solid numbers on both nights, beginning with 20 points, five rebounds and two steals in the Tolar loss. Three nights later, he finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals in a tough 32-26 win at Breck to clinch a postseason berth.

National Signing Day is typically a busy one in the Big Country Preps’ coverage area and 2025 was no exception with several players inking and/or confirming their commitments to play at the next level. 

At various signing ceremonies held throughout the area, athletes celebrated their final choices to pursue a degree while competing collegiately.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cisco post snags our weekly award with two huge double-doubles

Cisco’s Law Pinnick picked the perfect night to have one of the best games he’s ever had — a crucial district showdown at Hawley, where he helped the Loboes to a 55-43 win over the Bearcats with 18 points and an eye-popping 19 rebounds. 

Three days later he delivered 23 points and 10 boards to help Cisco beat Albany — lifting the Loboes to 16-6 overall and 9-0 in district. 

His performance earned him our Big Country Preps Player of the Week Award for the Week ending Feb. 1.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Clyde’s Underwood takes accolade after passing the 1,000 milestone a second time

It was a month of milestones for Clyde senior post Maddie Underwood, who takes our Big Country Preps Player of the Week with a combination of great numbers, along with team and career achievements. 

To begin with she charted a combined 42 points and 29 boards in wins over Grape Creek and Merkel. 

In the process, she helped the Lady Bulldogs (20-8, 8-2) lock up their first playoff berth in nine years and their first 20-win season in 10.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Gorman junior takes this week’s accolade

Back-to-back double-doubles in two dominating efforts were enough to give Gorman junior Delila Crain our Big Country Player of the Week for the week ending Saturday, Jan. 18. 

Opening the week with an 83-7 rout of Bluff Dale, Crain posted 30 points and 10 boards to go with five assists, five deflections, six steals and four blocks. 

She followed that with 21 points, 12 boards, five deflections, four assists and three steals in a 58-27 win over Huckabay.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jim Ned’s Grohman takes this week’s spotlight

The fact that Riley Grohman is our Player of the Week should surprise no one, considering she was named to our All-Big Country Preps team last year. But when you toss in her stats — an all-encompassing set of numbers — it makes even more sense. 

The senior guard was at the top of the stat sheet last week for the third-ranked Lady Indians, who swept Merkel (70-25) and Clyde (79-29) to improve to 24-2.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jim Ned’s Wyatt Nickson takes first honor of 2025


Wyatt Nickson was on fire over Christmas Break.

In fact, in six games the senior guard averaged 19.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game while shooting 45 percent overall and 48 percent from the 3-point line.

“Wyatt has been putting in the extra work to make himself the best scorer possible,” coach Blake Allen said. “He has been on an absolute tear and he is fun to watch play basketball”

The Indians enter this week at 12-6.

STATE FEATURE: Stanaland, Reed cement their legacies in Arlington

ARLINGTON — While both Jayton coach Josh Stanaland and Gordon coach Mike Reed both tried to downplay the achievement, the pair of long tenured Big Country coaches earned legacy wins on Wednesday in the Class 1A state championship games at AT&T Stadium.

Stanaland led the Jaybirds to a 54-8 win over Oakwood to open four days of action at the home of the Dallas Cowboys before the Longhorns hammered Whiteface 70-24 to make it a clean sweep.

It was the first state championship for Jayton since 1985, while the Longhorns went back-to-back. The two squads had a combined seven seniors and are already heavily favored to return to Arlington in 2025.

GAME STORY: Gordon caps off dominant season with second consecutive title

ARLINGTON — Wednesday afternoon was just another ho-hum day for Gordon as the Longhorns held the ball for just 4:09 and ran 16 offensive plays in the Class 1A Division I State Championship game against Whiteface at AT&T Stadium.

Despite the limited offensive snaps, the outcome was never in doubt as Gordon averaged 20 yards per play on its way to a 70-24 win, clinching a repeat as state champions.

Stryker Reed’s 45-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half ended the game on the 45-point rule.

GAME STORY: Jayton ends football title drought with dominant win over Oakwood

ARLINGTON — Colt Gentry had two fumble recoveries for touchdowns and Sean Stanaland accounted for four touchdowns as Jayton claimed its first state football championship in 39 years with a 54-8 win over Oakwood on Wednesday morning at AT&T Stadium.

Gentry recovered an offensive fumble in the end zone on Jayton’s first scoring drive before notching a scoop-and-score with a 73-yard return on the next Oakwood possession as he earned Defensive MVP honors in the Class 1A Division II game.

Stanaland, who threw for 102 yards and ran for 28 more, was named Offensive MVP after the Jaybirds (15-0) had their 13th win this season in a game that ended at halftime.

After 16 weeks of struggle, the Big Country has landed three representatives in Arlington for their respective state championship games. Stamford, Gordon and Jayton have reached Jerry World, beginning play today with six-man action. Stamford will play at 11 a.m. on Thursday. 

That said, it has been a distinct pleasure, as always, to write this weekly picks column and I’m already looking forward to doing it again in 2025.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Forsan sophomore snags our final award of the 2024 calendar year

Our final Big Country Preps Player of the Week for 2024 earned it in several ways. 

Forsan sophomore Coy Evans, a multi-talented guard who plays way ahead of the learning curve, takes our accolade after helping the Buffaloes to a 3-1 record and a third-place finish in the Borden County Tournament over the Weekend. 

“He played very unselfish basketball,” Forsan coach Cory Richardson said. “He was getting other people involved and when we needed him to, he stepped up and scored.”

SIX-MAN REWIND: Gordon, Jayton cruise to state championship games with impressive semifinal showings

The Gordon Longhorns and Jayton Jaybirds have been ranked No. 1 in Class 1A Division I and II, respectively, all year, and both have been popular picks to take home state championships this season.

Last week, both earned the opportunity to compete for a title with impressive state semifinal wins. Gordon stayed unbeaten with a 77-36 win over Abbott, handing the Panthers their first loss of the season, while Jayton throttled Klondike 90-48 to maintain a perfect record itself.

In the only other game involving an area team, Water Valley fell 74-54 to 14-0 Whiteface to narrowly miss out on its own trip to AT&T Stadium in Arlington. 

Gordon and Jayton will now get some extra time to prepare for their championship games, which are slated for Dec. 18. It the meantime, let’s take a look at how the Longhorns and Jaybirds got here. Ira junior Hudson Luft had a week that was nothing short of eye-popping — eye-popping enough to earn him our Big Country Preps Player of the Week award for the week ending Dec. 7. 

Luft takes it this time around with a performance that went as follows: 28 points, 10 boards vs. Spur, 18 points, eight steals vs. Eden, 46 points, four steals vs. Loraine, 21 points vs. Robert Lee, 30 points, six steals vs. Roscoe and 24 points vs Winters.

GAME STORY: Defending champion Gordon earns return trip to Arlington with 77-36 win over Abbott

GODLEY — Stryker Reed rushed for 186 yards, completed each of his three passes, completed all three of his passes for 97 yards and accounted for two Gordon scores to lead the Longhorns to a 77-36 thrashing of Abbott in a Class 1A Division I state semifinal game Friday night at Wildcat Stadium.

As remarkable as the versatile junior back’s individual effort was, what transpired over the entirety of 40 rain-soaked minutes was even more important. With its 14th straight win since the beginning of the 2024 season, Gordon earned a trip to AT&T Stadium in Arlington in 10 days with a chance to become a back-to-back Class 1A DI champion. The Panthers ended their season with a 13-1 record.

Friday’s game marked the first time all year that the Longhorns had to play a complete four quarters, having entered the contest outscoring opponents 721-48 and seeing all 13 previous tilts called on account of the 45-point mercy rule.

SIX-MAN REWIND: Water Valley, Gordon and Jayton punch tickets to state semifinals

The six-man region finals have come and gone, and three teams from the Big Country Preps coverage area remain in the hunt for a state championship.

Water Valley and Gordon punched their ticket to the Class 1A Division I state semifinals with wins over Westbrook and Jonesboro, respectively, while top-ranked Jayton earned a trip to the DII state semis with an impressive win over two-time defending state champion Benjamin.

Richland Springs, meanwhile, joined those to bow out in the playoffs’ third round, dropping a hard-fought game to Oglesby.

GAME STORY: Jayton tested in first half before ending Benjamin’s title reign

Jayton football coach Josh Stanaland was worried about how his squad would respond if challenged and forced to play more than one half of football.

With that having happened only once all year, in Week 4 against Knox City, the veteran coach got his answer in a resounding way in a Region II-1A Division II final against Benjamin on Friday night at McMurry’s Wilford Moore Stadium.

The Jaybirds scored the final 36 points and used a stifling second-half defense to outlast the Mustangs 100-50, dethroning the two-time defending state champions in the process.

SIX-MAN LOOKAHEAD: Six area squads remain with state semifinals on horizon

Just two wins separate the state’s top six-man teams from a trip to Arlington for the Class 1A state championships, and we still have six area squads with a heartbeat between the Division I and II brackets. 

Westbrook, Water Valley and Gordon remain in the large school playoffs, while Jayton, Benjamin and Richland Springs are still alive in Division II. 

With all set to be playing post-Thanksgiving football, there are only winners among that group, but our survivor list will shrink by at least two before the weekend. Without further ado, it’s time to look at what each is up against in Week 14.

SIX-MAN LOOKAHEAD: Playoffs kick off with a bevy of high-profile matchups

The high school football playoffs are here. And unlike the 11-man version, which features a large number of mismatches in the opening round, the six-man brackets are loaded with thrilling matchups right off the bat.

With just two teams making the playoffs from each UIL district, you won’t find much filler in the Class 1A pairings, so teams hoping to contend had better be ready to play from the jump.

Needless to say, it should be blast to watch the cream rise to the top over the next several weeks as the best of the best shoot for a trip to Arlington on Dec. 18. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We’ve got plenty to look forward to this week alone.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Evans takes award with monstrous performance

When someone hits 27 of 34 passes for 441 yards and five scores, it’s generally the type of performance that appears on our Player of the Week radar screen. 

When it’s done in only two and a half quarters, however, it makes everyone sit up and do a doubletake. 

That was the case for Glen Rose quarterback Canyon Evans, who shredded Fort Worth Dunbar in a 61-7 win on Friday that saw him removed before the onset of the fourth quarter.
