COAHOMA FEATURE: Hard-working running back Kerby a selfless star for Bulldogs

COAHOMA — There’s an axiom among coaches that if/when your best players are also your hardest workers and best teammates, you’ve got a chance to be good.

Fortunately for the 2021 Coahoma Bulldogs, senior running back Brysen Kerby checks all of those boxes.

As a 1,500-yard rusher with 24 touchdowns a year ago, Kerby’s talent is unquestionable. But if you ask fourth-year CHS coach Chris Joslin, that’s only a small part of what makes the 5-foot-9, 185-pound speedster special. It’s what he does in the weight room, on the practice field and around his teammates that really sets him apart — and gives Joslin confidence that his Bulldogs will be just fine despite graduating more lettermen (14) than they return (13).

2021 COAHOMA FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Bulldogs leaning on speed, continuity to keep train rolling

COAHOMA —Throughout his time at Coahoma, fourth-year coach Chris Joslin has been working to build a program that can absorb significant graduation losses and still compete at a high level on the field.

After losing a combined 32 lettermen the past two seasons, that goal is being put to the test.

The Bulldogs graduated 18 seniors off their 9-3 team in 2019. And after seeing 14 lettermen move on from last year’s 6-4 squad, they’ll try to extend their streak of consecutive playoff seasons to six this fall.

While CHS will certainly have some holes to fill, Joslin is confident the 13 lettermen that remain will join call-ups from a 5-5 junior varsity team to keep the Bulldog train rolling forward.

GAME STORY: Jacksboro takes Game 1 from Coahoma, 11-2

Through four innings, Coahoma and Jacksboro were knotted at 2-2 with no hint of the avalanche that was about to strike at Cooper Softball Field.

One bizarre play, however, is all it took to turn a would-be three-run inning for Jacksboro inning into a five-run explosion. The Tigerettes followed that up with a four-run sixth to win going away, 11-2.

Harlee Richardson was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs and Jaci Gann was two for three with two RBIs to lead Jacksboro (30-6), which can clinch the series with a win in Game 2, slated for 5 p.m., Friday at Cooper. Game 3, if needed, will follow 30 minutes after Game 2.

STATE TRACK ROUNDUP (Day 2): Vancleave wins discus state title at the last possible moment

How many of you once dreamed of hitting a game-winning homerun or shooting the game-winning shot to win a championship?

Hamlin senior Jenna Vancleave experienced the track and field equivalent of the same dream on Friday in Austin, only she had an even greater sense of urgency.

Not only did Vancleave win the girls 2A discus state title on the final throw of the competition at the state meet, but she did it on what she knew would be the final throw of her career. Her performance shares the spotlight with Wylie’s Kylor Aguilar, who took gold in the boys 5A pole vault.

“I just came in hoping for the best,” Vancleave said. “It was all in God’s hands.

“I was very nervous. My stomach hurt so bad, but my coaches talked to me and calmed me down. They were like, ‘You’ve just got to throw. Let it loose and relax.’ So I took that advice and and apparently it worked.”

GAME STORY: Coahoma opens with win over Wichita Falls City View

IOWA PARK— Makayla Calvio admitted she felt a little nervous in the seventh inning of Coahoma’s series opener against Wichita Falls City View.

But the freshman pitcher also trusted the Bulldogettes’ defense in case a play needed to be made.

That’s exactly what happened as center fielder Shae Lang snagged a hard-hit line drive and doubled off a Lady Mustang at second base, sealing Coahoma’s 3-1 victory.

Let’s not waste any time. Let’s dive in.

EVAN REN: Picking the favorites, dark horses and longshots at the girls state track meet

I don’t care who you are — even if you’re a non-fan when it comes to track and field.

The excitement of the state meet in Austin will capture your attention if you catch sight or sound of it. It’s inescapable.

And once per year, it is my pleasure to examine the multitude of Big Country athletes heading to Austin for the event and pick who we can expect to see on the medal stand from our area.

Let’s begin with the girls side, looking at each event in which a Big Country athlete has qualified for state.

GAME STORY: Coahoma rallies to defeat Clyde in rainy Game 1

HERMLEIGH — Among those who keep tabs on area softball, the general consensus was that the Coahoma-Clyde Class 3A bi-district series would be a slugfest.

And on Friday night at Hermleigh, through three hours and 10 minutes, two rain delays, 26 combined runs and 25 combined hits, the two area powers managed to demonstrate why.

Kenzie Canales was 2 for 5 with a double, a home run and three RBIs to lift Coahoma (22-5) to a 16-10 win in Game 1. The Bulldogettes, who trailed 6-0 early on before heating up offensively, can lock up the best-of-three series with a win in Game 2 at noon on Saturday in Hermleigh.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Clyde’s Phillips earns this week’s spotlight

In a week filled with unforgettable moments, several of our nominees handed in by area coaches could justifiably be called our Capital Farm Credit/BCP Player of the Week.

We finally settled on Clyde sophomore Payton Phillips, who stunned attendees at the Region I-3A meet by taking gold in both the long jump (18 feet, 6 inches) and the 100 hurdles (15.12) — breaking school records that were 25 and 15 years old, respectively.
