TOURNAMENT CENTRAL: Eula, Cisco, Eastland to compete for title on Day 2 of Holiday Classic
There will be three Big Country teams in the Eula Holiday Classic girls semifinals Saturday after successful runs Friday by Eula, Cisco and Eastland.
Eula defeated Eastland 26-24 in what was essentially an exhibition to open the tournament, and both the Lady Pirates and Lady Mavs followed that performance with quarterfinal wins to secure spots in the semis. Eula throttled Tolar 40-24 to earn a matchup with Cisco, while Eastland blasted Clyde 48-23 to advance to take on Mason.
Cisco claimed its spot in Saturday’s semifinals with a 42-36 win over Holliday in the first round and a 59-55 double-overtime victory over Colorado City in the quarters.
TOURNAMENT CENTRAL: Breck, Jim Ned earn spot in boys semis at Eula Holiday Classic
After 15 games of boys action on Day 1 of the Eula Holiday Classic, two Big Country teams remain with a chance at the tournament title.
Both Breckenridge and Jim Ned swept their two games Friday to earn a spot in Saturday’s semifinals. And one of those two is guaranteed to reach the championship game as the Buckaroos and Indians are slated to face off at 10:20 a.m. for a shot to face the winner between fellow semifinalists Martin’s Mill and Tolar.
Breckenridge earned that opportunity with dominating wins over Colorado City (63-34) and Eula (50-37), while Jim Ned had to rally past Holliday for a 31-29 win in the quarterfinals after routing Christoval 61-31 in its opener.
PREVIEW: Eula Holiday Classic set to tip off Friday
The Eula Holiday Classic will tip off Friday, continuing its annual run as one of the best small-school basketball tournaments in the state.
With talented fields on both the boys and girls side, a staple of this event, the Classic will feature 58 games across four sites by the time it wraps up Saturday evening.

GAME STORY: Brock sends message with shutout win over Clyde
After struggling to narrow wins over Boyd (13-6) and Paradise (24-22) to end the regular season, the Brock football team wanted to send a message in its playoff opener against Clyde.
Mission accomplished.
The Eagles pounded out 258 yards rushing while the holding the Bulldogs to a single first down in a 24-0 shutout Thursday at Shotwell Stadium, earning an area-round date with Denver City next Thursday at the same site.

I say the same thing at this point every season.
We no longer have a Game of the Week. Once the playoffs start, they’re all the Game of the Week. We’ll only be limited by how many games we can get to and Big Country Preps will endeavor to get to as many as possible.
Nonetheless, some games warrant a close inspection as we head into the bi-district round. So here’s a quick peek at the five games we view as the most intriguing heading into this week’s action, with the remainder of my postseason picks listed below.
BCP Podcast No. 70: Evan, Daniel chat with Sweetwater’s Ben McGehee
After coaching Sweetwater to a 10-win season in his first year as the school’s football coach in 2017 and experiencing a tough 1-9 campaign with a young squad last season, Ben McGehee has the Mustangs back on the rise this fall. Leading an SHS team that is still among the youngest in the Big Country, McGehee guided the Mustangs to back-to-back wins in their final two regular season games to move to 4-6 and secure a playoff berth.
Earlier this week, McGehee took some time to chat with Big Country Preps’ Evan Ren and Daniel Youngblood about his team’s run to the postseason, the potential of his young nucleus and what his experience at Sweetwater has been like for this week’s Capital Farm Credit Wednesday Night Podcast.

District 3-3A Division I: Week 11 Report
Clyde 55, Breckenridge 26 — Clyde overcame 10 penalties for 115 yards to snag the No. 3 seed for the playoffs.
The Bulldogs rushed for 268 yards via committee with Donovan Gomez charting 73 yards and two scores on just seven carries.
Caanan Charleston and Antonio Guerrero added rushing scores as well, with 68 and 62 yards on the ground respectively.
Owen Woodward led Breckenridge with 145 yards passing for three scores.
BCP GAME OF THE WEEK: Pipers, Lions clash for district title (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country picks)
LAST WEEK: 40-3, .930
OVERALL: 397-76, .839
At the beginning of the season, I pointed to this game as a likely Big Country Preps Game of the Week and along with that, I said two things: On paper, Hamlin would be the favorite (which they are) and that I’d pick Albany (which i will).
I’m throwing logic completely out of the window here and basing this pick on history alone.
For better or worse, Hamlin has not beaten Albany since 2001 — a time span that includes 12 straight AHS victories, including two Lion wins last year that saw me pick the Pied Pipers twice.
BCP Podcast No. 69: Denney Faith, Russell Lucas talk Albany-Hamlin matchup with Evan, Daniel
During their time at their respective schools, Albany’s Denney Faith and Hamlin’s Russell Lucas have been among the most successful football coaches in all of the Big Country.
With their teams set to clash in what may be the game of the year in this area, the two mentors joined Big Country Preps’ Evan Ren and Daniel Youngblood to talk about the Albany-Hamlin rivalry and this year’s matchup in particular for this week’s Capital Farm Credit Wednesday Night Podcast.

District 3-3A Division I: Week 10 Report
Eastland 42, Clyde 27 — Behren Morton was 22 of 36 for 288 yards and four scores as Eastland recovered from its first loss of the year (at Wall on Oct.
25) with a big win over Clyde.
Anthony Bonilla was Morton’s favorite target, hauling in seven catches for 142 yards and a score. He also rushed eight times for 69 yards and two more touchdowns as the Mavericks improved to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in district play.
Dylan Neuman led Clyde (6-3, 2-2) with 231 yards passing, including a 37-yard TD pass to Jax Roam in the fourth quarter.
BCP Podcast No. 68: Brady’s Shay Easterwood talks Bulldog turnaround with Evan, Daniel
It’s taken Brady native Shay Easterwood three years to lay the foundation for the BHS football program, but with his team sitting at 4-4 overall and 3-0 in District 13-3A play, he has the Bulldogs in position to compete a district championship this season.

District 3-3A Division I: Week 9 Report
Breckenridge 40, Early 7 — Breckenridge pounded out 395 yards rushing as a team to notch its first victory of the season.
Owen Woodward rushed for 188 yards and three scores and Jonas Arellano added 100 yards and two TDS on just nine carries to lead the Buckaroos (1-7, 1-2).
Early fell to 3-5 and 0-3 with the loss.
BCP Podcast No. 67: Hugh Sandifer jumps on to talk Wylie football, career
In his 41 years at Wylie High School, more than 30 of those as the Bulldogs’ head football coach, Hugh Sandifer has had one of the most successful tenures the Big Country has ever seen. But in the past two years, WHS has struggled while transitioning to the Class 5A level, experiencing an 18-game losing streak before defeating Wichita Falls High 21-14 last week.
Earlier this week, Sandifer took some time to visit with Big Country Preps’ Daniel Youngblood about that victory, his tenure at Wylie and what drives him to continue coaching for this week’s Capital Farm Credit Wednesday Night Podcast.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brady’s Bauer snags award again
In a week filled with explosive performances it wasn’t easy choosing our weekly award winner among those nominated by our coaches.
We eventually settled on Brady’s Walker Bauer, whose dual-threat performance in a win over Johnson City was just good enough to eclipse the others.
Throwing for 132 yards and four touchdowns in a 53-3 win over Johnson City, Bauer was perhaps even more impressive running the ball, with 239 yards and and two additional scores.
District 3-3A Division I: Week 8 Report
Clyde 33, Early 0 — The Bulldogs bounced back from last week’s loss at Wall with their fourth shutout victory of the season, outgaining the Longhorns 444-156 in a dominating effort.
Bo Baker rushed for 214 yards and a touchdown, Donovan Gomez ran for three scores and Dylan Nueman passed for 157 yards and a TD to lead Clyde, which led 20-0 by halftime. Cale Wade rushed for 61 yards on 12 carries for Early, which fell to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in District 3-3 DI play with the loss.
Up next for the Bulldogs (5-2, 1-1 ) is a home game against Jim Ned, while the Longhorns return to the field next week at Breckenridge.

It’s been a big year for Eastland football coach James Morton, who has coached the Mavericks to a 6-0 start and earlier this week week watched his son, standout junior quarterback Behren Morton, commit to play collegiately at Texas Tech.

District 3-3A Division I: Week 7 Report
Wall 35, Clyde 7 — In a high-profile game between the district favorite and perhaps the most-improved team in the league, the Hawks got the better of the upstart Bulldogs.
Mason Fuchs threw for 79 yards, rushed for 23 and threw one TD pass to lead Wall (6-0, 1-0), tallied 222 rushing yards via committee.
Leading 14-0 at the break, third-ranked Hawks blew the game open with a 5-yard TD run by Cinch Dickey at the 7:30 mark and a 17-yard TD jaunt by Chase Rios at 0:53.

There comes a point when every emerging football program has to show its hand. And it’s usually around the midpoint of the season when we can differentiate between who has a full house and who’s holding a pair of deuces.
The Coahoma Bulldogs (4-1) will reach that point this Friday when they host perennial toughie Idalou (3-2) in our Big Country Preps Game of the Week.

EVAN REN: High school athletics has forgotten itself
What is the purpose of interscholastic athletics? It seems silly to even pose the question.
I bring it up because within the word purpose lies the problem — a poisonous problem, brought on by our own lack of vision.
Must I say it?
The original purpose behind high school sports was the teaching of teamwork, work ethic, sacrifice, respecting authority, overcoming adversity and accepting discipline.
Sports taught our kids that the world wasn’t perfect. It taught our kids that there would be disappointments to endure. It taught them the benefits of hard work and we hired our coaches accordingly.
Somewhere along the line we injected winning into the mix and it has resulted in something truly ugly.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Anson’s Hagler earns the top spot
With a large portion of the Big Country enjoying a bye week, there were a limited number of games last Friday from which to glean top-flight performances.
Nonetheless, the area managed.
Taking our Player of the Week award for the week ending Oct. 5: Anson’s Drew Hagler, who has already had a number of near-misses with the accolade in 2019.
