EVAN REN: Big Country baseball, softball hit hard during corona outbreak

Come springtime, I’ve always been a big baseball and softball guy, which makes my current life in exile all the more difficult.

With the entire country on a virtual lockdown and me stuck in my office until further notice, I can’t help but be torn between doing what’s right and thinking about what has been lost.

Globally, very few will escape the coronavirus outbreak without being affected in some way, shape or form. But on a personal level, it means contemplating the loss of one great season after another. Barring a sudden turnaround, hundreds of irreplaceable memories that could have been, will simply never materialize.

So, am I of the opinion that the rest of the athletic competition for this school year will be lost?

SIGH … I hope I’m wrong. But yes, I believe it’s over.

FEATURE: Turner, Lee headline dangerous Clyde softball team

Kaitlyn Turner and Peyton Lee have been impact players on Clyde’s softball team ever since they were freshmen.

Coach Reagan Sewell knows having two college-caliber pitchers at the 3A level is a luxury. The growth they’ve achieved since joining the Lady Bulldogs in 2017 hasn’t been a fluke, either.

“Watching them become the leaders they are right now has been tremendous,” Sewell said. “And you give that up to experience, just having the experiences they have had. They’ve just grown all the way around, it just seems like every year they get better.”

FEATURE: Marc Case — A Basketball Love Story … Former McMurry player, Cooper coach has Clyde in playoffs

Marc Case is at it again, taking over a high school basketball team in urgent need of a coach and turning it into a winner.

This time it’s at Clyde — the second season of his second stint as the Bulldogs’ head coach. The passionate, fiery, old-school fundamentals coach who began his career in the 1970s has guided the Bulldogs back into the playoffs with a 19-14 record. Clyde will face Early (also 19-14) in a Class 3A boys’ bidistrict game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Brownwood Coliseum.

“I always loved playing in the Coliseum,” the seemingly ageless 68-year-old Case said the other day. “I know it’s only five miles for Early to travel and 70 miles for us, but it’s a great place to play with a great atmosphere.”

Some might suggest Tuesday’s game will bring Case’s basketball career full circle, considering he played multiple times in Brownwood Coliseum from 1969-1973 as a McMurry guard going against the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets when both colleges were Lone Star Conference members.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brownwood senior takes award with a Strong showing

While monstrous numbers are more common among small-school standouts, it’s an entirely different thing to post them against Class 4A competition.

Our Big Country Preps Player of the Week, Brownwood senior forward Zach Strong, did exactly that last week in wins over Glen Rose (88-60) and Godley (73-52).

Helping the Lions improve to 23-5 overall and 4-0 in district, Strong posted back-to-back double-doubles that were on a huge scale.

UIL hands out its share of surprises to area schools (w/ five video interviews)

ABILENE — The University Interscholastic league released its new athletic districts for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years on Monday.

As always, a sizable contingent of area coaches was on hand at the Region 14 Education Service Center to receive their information packets and arrange for any last-second schedule changes that were forced by realignment.

Perhaps the biggest stunner was a move north by Class 2A Division I power San Saba, which has been shifted to the new District 4 with Cisco, Coleman, De Leon, Goldthwaite and Winters.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Breckenridge senior takes the top spot

Not only are the Breckenridge Buckaroos off to a flying start at 17-3, but senior guard Aaryn Medina is drawing plenty of attention as well.

Our Big Country Preps Player of the Week lit up both Boyd (64-28) and Millsap (72-57) to lead the Buckaroos to a district sweep last week, with an eye-popping 35-point scoring average for the two games.

Along the way, he collected a total of 20 rebounds, eight assists and nine steals to keep the Buckaroos unbeaten in district play at 3-0.

Evan Ren’s 2019 Big Country True Grit Team: The toughest players in the Big Country!

We all know a football player who almost never misses any practice time and practically lives in the weight room. He’s always early to arrive and late to leave. He’s coachable, but seldom needs direction because he always pays attention.

You know who I’m talking about.

The guy who sets a good example for young players. The guy who never complains and, first and foremost, is tough mentally and physically. He may not be the best player on a team (though some of them are). But he’s definitely the guy who gets the most out of the talent he’s given.

Welcome to the 2019 “True Grit” team — the one place in the Big Country where guys who fall into this category are recognized for it.

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL: Martin’s Mill tops Breck for Eula Holiday Classic boys title

For 2½ quarters, Breckenridge played right with perennial power Martin’s Mill in the Eula Holiday Classic boys championship game Saturday. But the Buckaroos ran out of gas over the final 12 minutes, falling to the Class 2A No. 3 Mustangs 64-42 to cap two days of near-nonstop basketball action.

Breck, which defeated Jim Ned 60-47 in Saturday morning’s semifinals after an impressive 2-0 showing on Friday, was tied with Martin’s Mill at 28-all with 5:31 remaining in the third quarter. But the Mustangs closed that period on a 16-2 run and maintained control for the remainder of the game to claim their second straight title at Eula’s annual tournament.

That finish followed a 62-44 win for Childress over Jim Ned in the boys third-place game. The Bobcats, who fell to Martin’s Mill 58-53 in the quarterfinals on Friday, replaced Tolar in the third-place game to avoid a matchup with district rival Holliday in the consolation title game. Tolar ended up taking the Gold Bracket consolation championship with a 39-36 victory over Holliday.

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL: Buzzer beaters decide girls title, third-place game at Eula Classic

The girls half of the Eula Holiday Classic came to a thrilling close Saturday as both the Gold Bracket championship and third-place games were decided by last-second 3-pointers.

Mere hours after Anna Masonheimer’s buzzer-beating trey lifted Eula to a 33-32 win over Eastland in the third-place game, Mason’s Jesse Armstrong canned a triple at the horn to lift the Cowgirls to a 37-35 victory over Cisco for the tournament title.

Those outcomes put a bow on a weekend of basketball action that saw 14 teams play 28 games over a two-day period at the Eula and Clyde gyms.
