Walt Thompson is not a typical high school football player.

In addition to being a third-year starter at middle linebacker for the Goldthwaite Eagles with 206 tackles the previous two seasons, Thompson is better known in his hometown as a two-time UIL Class 2A state champion medalist in golf.

Thompson won state in golf as a freshman in 2024 and as a sophomore in 2025. He took the Goldthwaite team with him to state last spring, but Thompson finished eighth in the 2026 medalist standings.

Golf is his sport of the future as Thompson is considering collegiate offers from NCAA Division II Lubbock Christian University and NAIA Texas A&M-Texarkana.
