FEATURE: Speedy Abilene High softball team riding ‘small ball’ to big season

Looking at the Abilene High softball team’s run totals, it would be easy to assume that the Lady Eagles have a lineup full of mashers. In the playoffs alone, AHS has averaged almost six runs per game — a hefty number behind a pair of standout pitchers in Diana Silva and Avah Reyes.

But coach Jenna Aguirre’s team doesn’t achieve those results the way one might think.

Doing more running that slugging, the Lady Eagles are playing big-inning softball using small ball. And in the process, they’re proving the age old idiom — speed kills.
