COUNTDOWN TO TWO-A-DAYS: The Eastland Mavericks … 14 days to two-a-days

Football is just around the corner, and we at BigCountryPreps.com are committed to bringing you the information you need to prepare for your favorite team’s season.

We’ll be releasing our Big Country Preps Preseason Football Preview, the most comprehensive look at the upcoming Big Country football season anywhere, on Wednesday, Aug. 16. But you won’t have to wait until then to sate your gridiron appetite.

Leading up to the first day of fall football practice on July 31, we’ll be spotlighting each 11-man team in the area and posing some of the key questions they’ll face in 2023 as part of our annual “Countdown to Two-a-Days” series.

We continue in Class 3A Division II with the Eastland Mavericks. On Tuesday we will take a look at the Merkel Badgers, followed by the Breckenridge Buckaroos on Wednesday.

EASTLAND MAVERICKS

LAST YEAR’S RECORD

  • 1-9 overall, 1-4 District 5-3A Division II

ONE KEY STAT

  • Eastland’s 1-9 record last year marked the program’s first losing season since 2007, when the Mavericks finished 2-7 for the second year in a row. Last year also snapped a 13-year playoff streak for EHS.

TWO NAMES TO KNOW

  • Senior WR/DB Jay Oznick (Received for 657 yards and 9 touchdowns and rushed for 239 yards and 2 TDs in 2022)
  • Junior QB/DB Isaiah Hays (Passed for 1,840 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2022)

THREE BURNING QUESTIONS

  • What will the Mavericks look like in coach Bobby Schuman’s first year at the helm?
  • Can Eastland get a push up front and improve its running game, particularly in short-yardage situations?
  • Will EHS make positive strides on defense, where it allowed 42.5 points per game a year ago?
