COUNTDOWN TO TWO-A-DAYS: The Early Longhorns … 19 days to two-a-days

Football is just around the corner, and we at BigCountryPreps.com are committed to bringing you the information you need to prepare for your favorite team’s season.

We’ll be releasing our Big Country Preps Preseason Football Preview, the most comprehensive look at the upcoming Big Country football season anywhere, on Wednesday, Aug. 16. But you won’t have to wait until then to sate your gridiron appetite.

Leading up to the first day of fall football practice on July 31, we’ll be spotlighting each 11-man team in the area and posing some of the key questions they’ll face in 2023 as part of our annual “Countdown to Two-a-Days” series.

We continue in Class 3A Division II with the Early Longhorns. On Thursday we will take a look at the Wall Hawks, followed by the Coahoma Bulldogs on Thursday.

EARLY BULLDOGS

LAST YEAR’S RECORD

  • 7-5 overall, 4-1 District 2-3A Division II

ONE KEY STAT

  • Early’s 16-8 record over the past two seasons marks the school’s best two-year run since 2006-07, when the Longhorns went 20-7 under Robbie Tindol.

TWO NAMES TO KNOW

  • Senior RB/DB Griffin Cheslock (Rushed for 1,183 yards and 11 touchdowns and received for 111 yards in 2022)
  • Senior RB/LB Kaleb Ozuna (Rushed for 506 yards and 7 touchdowns and had 134 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 2 sacks and 2 forced fumbles in 2022)

THREE BURNING QUESTIONS

  • With just 12 of 26 lettermen back from last year’s team, will the Longhorns reload or rebuild in 2023?
  • What kind of contributions can Early expect from the call-ups from its 3-7 junior varsity team?
  • With a new quarterback and a rebuilt receiving corps, what will the EHS passing game look like this fall?
