Football is just around the corner, and we at BigCountryPreps.com are committed to bringing you the information you need to prepare for your favorite team’s season.
We’ll be releasing our Big Country Preps Preseason Football Preview, the most comprehensive look at the upcoming Big Country football season anywhere, on Wednesday, Aug. 16. But you won’t have to wait until then to sate your gridiron appetite.
Leading up to the first day of fall football practice on July 31, we’ll be spotlighting each 11-man team in the area and posing some of the key questions they’ll face in 2023 as part of our annual “Countdown to Two-a-Days” series.
We continue in Class 2A Division I with the San Saba Armadillos. On Monday we will take a look at the Ballinger Bearcats, followed by the Brady Bulldogs on Tuesday.
SAN SABA ARMADILLOS
LAST YEAR’S RECORD
- 6-4 overall, 2-4 District 5-2A Division I
ONE KEY STAT
- San Saba outscored its opponents 258-250 last season, but the Armadillos still had a four-year playoff streak snapped with a fifth-place finish in District 5-2A DI.
TWO NAMES TO KNOW
- Senior RB Ethan Gonzales (Rushed for 1,001 yards and 9 touchdowns and received for 115 yards in 2022)
- Junior LB Winton Lackey (Had 72 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 4 hurries and 1 forced fumble in 2022)
THREE BURNING QUESTIONS
- With limited depth on this year’s roster, can the Armadillos stay healthy enough to get back to the playoffs?
- Can an offensive line that returns some quality talent and experience be a strength for San Saba this year?
- How will senior Lane Miller make the transition to quarterback this season?
