Fueled by a dominant defensive performance, the Abilene High football team opened District 2-5A Division I play with a comfortable win over Lubbock Monterey, blanking the Plainsmen until the final minutes of a 37-7 victory at Shotwell Stadium.
The Eagles, who held Monterey to just 154 total yards and 10 first downs, led 23-0 by halftime and never let the Plainsmen back in the game after the break.
AHS extended its lead to 37-0 in the fourth quarter with a pair of Antoine Rashaw touchdown runs, before the visitors finally got on the board with a 71-yard touchdown pass with just 1:32 remaining in the game.
