COUNTDOWN TO TWO-A-DAYS: Sweetwater Mustangs

Football is just around the corner, and we at BigCountryPreps.com are committed to bringing you the information you need to prepare for your favorite team’s season.

We’ll be releasing our Big Country Preps Preseason Football Preview, the most comprehensive look at the upcoming Big Country football season anywhere, on Wednesday, Aug. 17. But you won’t have to wait until then to sate your gridiron appetite.

Leading up to the first day of fall football practice on Aug. 1, we’ll be spotlighting each 11-man team in the area and posing some of the key questions they’ll face in 2022 as part of our annual “Countdown to Two-a-Days” series.

We stay in Class 4A Division II with the Sweetwater Mustangs. On Friday we will take a look at the Big Spring Steers followed by the Brownwood Lions on Saturday.

SWEETWATER MUSTANGS

LAST YEAR’S RECORD

  • 8-4 overall, 4-0 District 3-4A Division II

ONE KEY STAT

  • The Mustangs won twice as many games as they lost in 2021, despite being outscored for the season 433-423.

TWO NAMES TO KNOW

  • Senior DL Noel Mekogue (Had 77 tackles, including 39 solos, in 2021)
  • Junior RB Malik Brown (Had 468 yards and 3 touchdowns rushing and 244 yards and 2 touchdowns receiving in 2021)

THREE BURNING QUESTIONS

  • With just 10 of 37 lettermen returning, including one offensive and two defensive starters, can the Mustangs reach the playoffs for the eighth time in the last nine years?
  • Who will replace four-year starter Leo Holsey at quarterback for the Mustangs?
  • Can a young Sweetwater defense improve on the 36.1 points per game allowed last season?
