COUNTDOWN TO TWO-A-DAYS: Winters Blizzards

Football is just around the corner, and we at BigCountryPreps.com are committed to bringing you the information you need to prepare for your favorite team’s season.

We’ll be releasing our Big Country Preps Preseason Football Preview, the most comprehensive look at the upcoming Big Country football season anywhere, on Wednesday, Aug. 17. But you won’t have to wait until then to sate your gridiron appetite.

Leading up to the first day of fall football practice on Aug. 1, we’ll be spotlighting each 11-man team in the area and posing some of the key questions they’ll face in 2022 as part of our annual “Countdown to Two-a-Days” series.

We stay in Class 2A Division I with the Winters Blizzards. On Wednesday we will take a look at the Bangs Dragons, followed by the Coleman Bluecats on Thursday.

WINTERS BLIZZARDS

LAST YEAR’S RECORD

  • 2-7 overall, 0-5 in District 3-2A Division I

ONE KEY STAT

  • The Blizzards had a four-year playoff streak snapped last season. That marked the third longest postseason streak in program history.

TWO NAMES TO KNOW

  • Senior RB/LB Aidan Leamon (Had 550 yards and 7 touchdowns rushing and 143 yards receiving while collecting 85 tackles in 2021)
  • Junior QB Chris Martinez (Had 550 yards and 4 TDs passing in 2021)

THREE BURNING QUESTIONS

  • With 14 lettermen returning, including seven starters on both sides of the ball, can Winters get back to the playoffs in 2022?
  • Now in their second year as a spread team, how much better will the Blizzards be on offense after averaging just 17 points per game last fall?
  • Can an experienced Winters defense bounce back after allowing 35.2 points per game a year ago?
