GAME RECAP: Argyle too much for Stephenville, scores 8-1 win in series opener

WEATHERFORD — The Argyle baseball team got a strong pitching performance from Evan Brandt and took advantage of four Stephenville errors to down the Yellow Jackets 8-1 in Game 1 of the Region I-4A championship series Thursday night at Weatherford College.

The Eagles scored three runs in the third and two each in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 7-0 lead, and the two teams traded runs in the final frame as Argyle put Stephenville on the ropes heading into Friday’s Game 2.

Of the Eagles’ eight runs, only four were earned. But even that was more support than needed for Brandt, who limited Stephenville to just one run on two hits and three walks over 6.1 strong innings.

Brandt outdueled Yellow Jackets ace Reece Elston, who surrendered five runs (two earned) in three-plus innings of work. The senior lefty used 99 pitches to pitch into the fourth, giving up four hits and six walks while striking out four in the loss.

Jadon Johnson, Dylanjer Meiron and Cole Chambers pitched the final four innings for Stephenville, combining to allow three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks.

Argyle took control in the third inning off Elston, who allowed just one baserunner through the first two innings. The Eagles sent nine batters to the plate in the third, turning an error, two hits and three walks into a 3-0 lead.

JC Davis and Hunter Sandifer each had RBI hits in the inning for Argyle, which outhit the Yellow Jackets 7-2 for the game.

The Eagles went up 5-0 in the fourth inning, scoring on a bases-loaded walk by Alex D’Angelo and a Stephenville error, before tacking on two more runs in the sixth on a Micah Roberts double and another Yellow Jackets miscue.

D’Angelo’s RBI single in the seventh put Argyle up 8-0, before Stephenville finally got on the board in the home half of that inning when Kyler Bowman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. With the bases still full and just one out on the board, the Yellow Jackets had a chance to do more damage in that frame, but Eagles reliever Sawyer Runnells struck out Elston and Corbin Poston to end the game.

Cutter Gray and Eli Hiitola had Stephenville’s only hits, with the latter scoring the Yellow Jackets’ only run.

Argyle, meanwhile, was led offensively by Davis, who went 3 for 4 with a walk, two runs and an RBI. Conor Lillis also scored two runs, while D’Angelo, Roberts and Sandifer each drove in two runs.

The series will resume at 7 p.m. Friday back at Weatherford College. If the Yellow Jackets can win Game 2, a deciding third game would be played at 7 p.m. Saturday at the same site.
