Locked in an extra-inning thriller with San Angelo Central and struggling to find consistent offense against Lady Cats pitcher Allizaya Talamantes, the Abilene High Lady Eagles needed someone to come through in the clutch if they were going to pick up a key District 2-6A win and work their way back into the league’s playoff race.
Stepping up to the plate with a runner on second and one out in the ninth, junior outfielder Yani Lee decided she was going to be that someone.
After starting the game 0 for 3 and making a key base-running mistake that cost the Lady Eagles a scoring chance in the fifth inning, Lee — AHS’ nine-hole hitter — became the hero when she roped a hard line drive down the line in left. The hit scored pinch runner Germanie Williams easily, lifting AHS to a 2-1 walk-off win and igniting a celebration on the infield that saw Lee mobbed by her teammates near second base.
