AMARILLO — A disastrous first quarter doomed Abilene High in a 40-21 loss to Amarillo Tascosa in its season opener Friday at Dick Bivins Stadium.
The Eagles outscored the Rebels 21-14 over the final three periods, but they never pulled closer than 18 points of the lead after spotting Tascosa a 26-0 first-quarter advantage.
The Rebels, who rushed for 294 yards in the victory, got a pair of scoring runs from quarterback BT Daniel to take a 14-0 lead less than five minutes into the game, before using a 50-yard fumble return touchdown by Jayden Whiteside to build the three-score cushion they would maintain the rest of the way.
