HASKELL — Trailing No. 24 Electra by 21 points on a pair of occasions in the second quarter, the 14th-ranked Westbrook Wildcats had every reason to panic Saturday at the Haskell High School gym.
The Wildcats scored just one point through the first eight minutes of the Region I-3A quarterfinal matchup and found themselves down 25-4 nearing the midway point of the second quarter.
But despite the seemingly dire circumstances, coach Jake Diggs’ squad did not panic. Instead, it chipped away at the deficit to pull within eight points at halftime before completing the improbable comeback with a big fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Tigers 51-49 and earn their first trip to the regional tournament since 2001.
