When Abilene High senior Matthew Ezzell was told over the offseason that the concussion issues that had ended his junior season prematurely would also mark the end of his career, it came as quite a blow.
But AHS coach Mike Fullen and Ezzell’s Eagle teammates weren’t about to let that be the end of the former starting quarterback’s football story.
Intent on keeping the senior — and his brand of steady leadership — around his program, Fullen floated the idea of having Ezzell take on almost an assistant coaching role. And after he eagerly accepted that, the QB was voted by his teammates as one of the Eagles’ captains for the 2020 season.
Though he’s been unable to play, those two things have allowed Ezzell to maintain a presence with his team — a fact for which he remains grateful.
