AMARILLO — The ninth-ranked Cooper Cougars remained unbeaten Friday, outscoring Amarillo Caprock 24-7 over the final 15 minutes to turn a 10-point game late in the third quarter into a 51-24 victory at Dick Bivins Stadium.
After racing out to a 21-3 halftime lead on the strength of a pair of defensive touchdowns, Cooper saw a pair of third-quarter scores by Caprock trim their lead to 27-17. But the Coogs closed that period with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Aidan Thompson to Izaiah Clark and continued pouring on points in the fourth quarter.
The win improved Cooper to 8-0 on the year and 4-0 in District 2-5A play, putting coach Aaron Roan’s squad just two wins away from the school’s first unbeaten regular season since 2002.
