Cooper 52, Lubbock Coronado 24 — Trailing 24-21 at halftime, the 10th-ranked Cougars outscored the Mustangs 31-0 during a dominant second half to open district play with an impressive road victory and remain unbeaten at 6-0.
Cooper outgained Coronado 521-363, including 370-23 on the ground, in avenging last year’s 42-23 loss in Abilene. Noah Garcia led that effort, rushing for 262 yards and four touchdowns on 30 carries, while Jessus Menjivar added 110 yards and two scores on 12 rush attempts.
The Coogs, who also got a solid day passing from quarterback Aidan Thompson (10-17-1—151), will host Amarillo Palo Duro this week, while Coronado will travel to Amarillo High for an important district game.
