GAME STORY: Cooper runs away from Monterey for rout in district opener

Each quarter of Cooper’s District 2-5A Division I opener against Lubbock Monterey told a different story Friday at Shotwell Stadium. But the Cougars dominated the two that mattered most on their way to a wild 70-49 victory.

After a hard-fought first quarter in which the Coogs had to rally from an early deficit to pull even at 7-all, coach Aaron Roan’s squad outscored Monterey 56-14 over the middle two periods, building a 63-14 lead in the third before Monterey closed with a flurry of points — primarily against Cooper backups.

Coach Wayne Hutchinson’s Plainsmen never got closer to the lead than 21 points after halftime, though, allowing Cooper to cruise to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the 2-5A DI standings.
