Midland Greenwood 57, Sweetwater 28 — A 30-point first quarter staked Greenwood to a 43-14 halftime lead, and the Rangers coasted from there to a comfortable win in the district opener for both teams.
Greenwood (5-0, 1-0), which outgained the Mustangs 561-362 and won the turnover battle 3-1, got 300 yards and three rushing touchdowns from Trey Cross and three passing TDs from Weston Wilber. Quarterback Leo Holsey accounted for all four of Sweetwater’s touchdowns, rushing for scores in each of the first two quarters, before adding a TD pass and run in the final period.
After a bye week next week, the Mustangs (1-4, 0-1) will have a chance to regroup on Oct. 11 when they take on winless Lamesa.
