LOCAL HOOPS ROUNDUP: AHS girls top Weatherford, earn fourth-place playoff against Trinity

WEATHERFORD — The Abilene High girls basketball team rallied from a 10-8 first-quarter deficit Tuesday to defeat Weatherford 44-37 and earn a playoff with Euless Trinity for the fourth and final playoff spot out of District 3-6A.

The Lady Eagles (16-18 overall, 5-7 in district) will take on the Lady Trojans at 6 p.m. Friday in Weatherford for a spot in the Class 6A playoffs next week.

AHS earned that opportunity by outscoring Weatherford in each of the final three quarters Tuesday, taking a 22-21 lead into halftime, before outpacing the Lady Kangaroos 22-16 over the final two periods.

Aleyssa Washington and Toria Wilson paced the Lady Eagles with 11 points each, while Destiny Potts added eight points and Trakenya Roberson scored six.

Weatherford (4-28, 0-12) was led by McKenzie Wells with 10 points and Hannah Kness with nine.

Wylie girls close out regular season with win

WICHITA FALLS — The Wylie girls basketball team closed out District 4-5A play with a dominating effort Tuesday, routing Wichita Falls High 61-29 to close out the regular season at 21-10 overall and 6-2 in league action.

The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Coyotes (9-19, 2-6) in all four quarters, taking a 30-11 lead into halftime and putting the game out of reach with a 15-8 run through the third quarter.

Abbey Henson led the way for coach Amy Powell’s squad with 23 points, while Mary Lovelace also reached double figures with 12. 

Drenea Singleton was WFHS’ leading scorer with nine points.

Wylie had already wrapped up second place in 4-5A play before Tuesday’s win. The Lady Bulldogs will open the playoffs next week against the third place team out of District 3-5A.

Abilene High boys rout Weatherford 71-43

WEATHERFORD — The Abilene High boys continued their recent surge Tuesday with a 71-43 win over Weatherford.

The Eagles, who have now won five of their last seven games, improved to 13-17 overall and 5-6 in District 3-6A with the win.

AHS got off to a fast start, outscoring the Kangaroos 20-8 in the first quarter, before taking complete control of the game with a 26-13 run through the second quarter.

Landon Talley led AHS with 17 points, while Jalen McGee scored 15 and Brian Patton finished with 10. Jackson Stevens just missed joining that group in double figures with nine points.

Weatherford was paced by Jorden Wheeler with a game-high 18 points, but no other Kangaroo player scored more than five points.

AHS hit 12 3-pointers in the victory, getting four from McGee and two apiece from Talley and Stevens.

Up next for the Eagles is a Friday home game against District 3-6A leader Euless Trinity.

Bulldogs finish strong to earn road win at WFHS

WICHITA FALLS — The Wylie boys scored the final seven points Tuesday to defeat Wichita Falls High 44-35 on the road.

The Bulldogs (17-11 overall, 4-2 in District 4-5A) led 21-14 at halftime and 30-20 heading into the final period, but the Coyotes (7-22, 1-6) cut Wylie’s lead to two points in the fourth quarter.

Coach Gregg Ruffin’s team responded with a 7-0 to close the game to take over second place in the district by virtue of Aledo’s loss at Wichita Falls Rider on Tuesday.

No player scored in double figures for Wylie, which got nine points from Duncan Bacon and Stran Blair, seven from Shayden Payne and six each from Payton Brooks and Isaiah Novil.

WFHS was fueled by Austin Dishman with a game-high 18 points.

Wylie will return to Wichita Falls on Friday to take on Rider before closing out the regular season next Tuesday with a home game against Cooper.
