‘LITTLE DYNAMITE’: Cooper’s Campos packs big game into small frame
At 5-foot-5, 140 pounds, Cooper wideout Daelin Campos is often the smallest guy on the football field. With elite speed and agility, he’s also one of the most explosive.
In Campos‘ mind — and virtually every other realm — that second fact far outweighs the first.
And as one of few returning playmakers from last year’s record-setting offense, the diminutive junior is determined to take his game to an even higher level for the Cougars this fall.
QB Sipe looks to pull Abilene High through tough spot
Abilene High senior Kallin Sipe isn’t relishing his newfound opportunity as the Eagles’ starting quarterback. That’s because he knew what had to happen for him to get it.
After being edged in a prolonged quarterback battle by junior Eric Abbe, Sipe was thrust into the first-team role when Abbe went down with a knee injury in the second quarter of last week’s opener at Amarillo Tascosa.
Now that it looks like he could stay there a while, Sipe’s far more concerned about helping his team accomplish its goals than any personal achievements or aspirations.
EVAN REN: Big Country picks Week 2
LAST WEEK: 33-19, .634
SEASON TOTAL: 33-19, .634
Whenever perennial powerhouses Cisco and Wall square off, it’s a candidate for the spotlight, and this year is no exception.
Friday, the Big Country Preps Game of the Week heads south, when the Loboes (1-0) visit Wall (0-1) with a fair amount of intrigue attached.
The Hawks, who are coming off a 27-21 loss to No. 3 Class 2A Mason, haven’t started a season at 0-2 since 2008. Yet Friday, they’ll be confronted with a Cisco team fully capable of pushing them down memory lane.
This is too high-profile to ignore. People want to know just how good this Cisco team is and with Wall being a proven commodity, this is a great measuring stick.
Wylie’s inexperienced, undersized D-line showing promise
Coming into the season, Wylie had one defensive lineman with significant varsity experience, and that showed at times during the team’s scrimmage against a big and physical Odessa High squad.
The progress made between that outing and last Friday’s opener against Georgetown, however, has both the players and their coaches optimistic about that group’s future.
While the final score — a 31-7 defeat — may not indicate it, the Bulldogs front held its own against a talented Eagle line, limiting Georgetown’s explosive offense to just 3.6 yards per rush attempt while sacking quarterback Jackson Sioson twice and using pressure to force a number of throws into coverage.
The key now is to build on that growth.
BCP Podcast No. 12: Evan, Daniel discuss Week 1 football results
The first week of the high school football season in the Big Country saw its share of thrilling finishes and surprising outcomes.
In this week’s Capital Farm Credit Wednesday Night Podcast, Big Country Preps’ Evan Ren and Daniel Youngblood forego a guest to discuss all the action and excitement of the season’s opening week.
District 3-6A: Week 1 Report
Amarillo Tascosa 13, Abilene High 7 — The Eagle defense made things tough on the Rebels all night Friday, but AHS just couldn’t do enough on offense to return to Abilene with a win.
Coach Del Van Cox‘s squad, which lost starting quarterback Eric Abbe to injury in the second quarter, finished with just 169 yards of total offense — all but 42 of those on the ground. Even still, the Eagles had a chance to win late, seeing a 12-play drive end deep in Tascosa territory on downs.
AHS, which was led by Esai Jaques with 57 yards on 19 carries, will try to regroup this week when it hits the road again — this time to the west for a matchup with Midland Lee.
District 2-5A Division I: Week 1 Report
Keller 41, Cooper 15 — Anything that could go wrong did for the Cougars in the first half of their season-opening loss to Keller on Friday. Cooper trailed 15-0 less than three minutes in and found itself down 41-6 at halftime of Coach Aaron Roan‘s head coaching debut.
The Coogs regrouped after a stoppage in play caused by a lighting issue at Shotwell Stadium, allowing only a Hail Mary on the final play of the first half from the 11:38 mark of the second quarter on and outscoring the Indians 9-0 in the second half. But the game was well decided by then.
Cooper finished with 281 total yards, getting 139 on the ground and 142 through the air. Daelin Campos led the offensive effort with 98 total yards (51 rushing; 47 receiving).
District 3-5A Division II: Week 1 Report
Georgetown 31, Wylie 7 — Struggles in the red zone and a couple of near misses on long pass plays kept this game from being closer than than the final tally, but the Bulldogs have some positives to build on after their season-opening loss to the Eagles.

Though it was unable to move the ball consistently, amassing just 186 total yards, Wylie was competitive with a ranked Class 5A Division I team for a half and could have put some real pressure on Georgetown had it been able to capitalize on a handful of really strong scoring chances.
As it was, however, Jaden Speegle‘s 97-yard kickoff return generated the only points for coach Hugh Sandifer‘s team, which also got 108 total yards (85 rushing; 23 receiving) from Bailey Hicks.
Abilene High loses QB, game at Tascosa
Abilene High’s opener at Amarillo Tascosa proved tough on multiple fronts as the Eagles lost their starting quarterback and the game Friday at Dick Bivins Stadium.
A first-quarter touchdown was all the offense AHS could muster in a 13-7 loss to the Rebels that saw junior quarterback Eric Abbe forced from action in the second quarter when he was rolled up on on a scramble.
The Eagles threatened late, driving deep into Tascosa territory in the waning minutes, but a turnover on downs ended their hopes of a comeback.
Roan’s Cooper debut spoiled by Keller
Friday night was a learning experience for new Cooper head coach Aaron Roan, who made his debut after a July promotion from being the team’s defensive coordinator.
His first game leading the Cougars didn’t exactly go as planned as Cooper was beaten 41-15 by Class 6A Keller on Friday at Shotwell Stadium.
After the game, Roan said he learned a few things as the head coach that he will be able to improve on.
“There were a lot of adverse situations that may come up and the whole experience is new,” Roan said. “I learned from all of it.”
Red zone struggles cost Wylie in loss to Georgetown
Missed opportunities in Georgetown territory proved too much to overcome for Wylie on Friday in a 31-7 season-opening loss to the Eagles at Bulldog Stadium.
After taking a 7-6 first-quarter lead on a 97-yard kickoff return by Jaden Speegle, Wylie saw six trips past the 50, including three inside the Eagle 25, result in zero points. That allowed Georgetown to take a 13-7 lead into halftime and take control of the game with scoring drives on the first two possessions of the second half.

Wylie gets taste of live action against OHS (w/ photo gallery)
The Wylie football team got its first taste of live action Friday night when it scrimmaged Odessa High at Bulldog Stadium.
The scrimmage started with a controlled session, which was largely controlled by the Bronchos. The Wylie defense forced turnovers on OHS’ first two possessions — a fumble and an interception — but coach Danny Servance’s team found its stride after that.

Scrimmage provides measuring stick for Cooper
A young Cooper football team got the measuring stick it was looking for Friday afternoon during a scrimmage at San Angelo Central.
The results were mixed, but first-year Cougar head coach Aaron Roan said he saw enough good to be encouraged and no mistakes that were unfixable.
AHS shows promise in scrimmage (w/ photo gallery)
The Abilene High football team scrimmaged Copperas Cove on Friday afternoon at Shotwell Stadium, outscoring the Bulldogs three touchdowns to two across several formats of play.
The scrimmage began with a controlled portion. The teams ran every play from the 30-yard line to start, before switching to drives from the 30 after that.
BCP Podcast No. 10: Al Pickett joins guys to talk “Brother’s Keeper” movie, more

In his more than 30 years as a part of Abilene’s sports scene, Al Pickett has done a little bit of everything. In addition to serving as the sports editor of the Abilene Reporter-News for 15 years, Pickett has been the play-by-play voice for numerous local high school and college teams, hosted his own radio show, “Let’s Talk Sports,” and authored five books about sports in Abilene and Texas.
Pickett, who is both the founder and a member of the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame, took some time this week to talk about his career in sports journalism, seeing his book “Brother’s Keeper” being made into a feature film and what his future holds on this week’s Capital Farm Credit Wednesday Night Podcast.
Also in this episode, Big Country Preps’ Evan Ren and Daniel Youngblood discuss the situations each of the area’s seven 11-man coaches taking over new programs face in 2018.
Cooper OL Squyres has big plans for senior year
Though he has at least 10 more games ahead of him, Cooper senior Thomas Squyres can feel his high school football career winding to a close.
And entering his third year as a starter on the Cougar offensive line, the 5-foot-9, 280-pound bruiser feels a sense of urgency to make his last season his best.
“It’s hit me,” Squyres said of entering his final high school season. “All good things have to come to an end, but I’m going out with a bang.”
Wilson set to become a leader for Eagle defense
If you had asked Colton Wilson before last season which side of the ball he prefers, he probably would have told you offense.
But that was before a breakout sophomore season that saw the standout safety lead Abilene High in tackles with 80 while intercepting two passes, forcing a fumble and recovering another.
Ask him that same question now and you’ll find he’s pretty content with his spot in the Eagle secondary.
Wylie Bulldogs embracing jump to Class 5A
For more than two decades, high school football fans have been speculating that a jump in classification was imminent for the Wylie Bulldogs. With each passing realignment period, certainty grew among rivals that the next one would be the one for the longtime Class 3A/4A power.
Well, after years of premature speculation, those predictions were finally proven true in December, when the University Interscholastic League announced its conference cutoffs for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years and, for the first time, placed the Bulldogs in 5A.
After spending so many years as one of the largest schools in its classification, Wylie will now get to experience the opposite side of that equation — a challenge the Bulldogs seem genuinely excited to tackle.
New coach Roan aims to keep Cooper on track
Entering his first season as a head football coach, Cooper’s Aaron Roan is basing his philosophy on a tried-and-true old axiom.
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Taking over the Cooper program in July after the unexpected resignation of Todd Moebes, Roan is seeking to keep things simple — and to keep the Cougars on a path that has yielded eight third-round playoff appearances in the past 10 seasons.
Same song, different verse for Wylie Bulldogs
A new football season at Wylie High School means two things.
First, that the Bulldogs will have a challenging slate of games ahead of them that would push many teams to their limit, and second, that a new group of senior leaders must — and most likely will — emerge to help them navigate it.
Aside from the obvious fact that Wylie will be competing in Class 5A for the first time, the 2018 campaign will mirror most others before it in those two regards.
With five opponents ranked in the top 20 of their respective classifications by Texas Football magazine, the Bulldogs’ schedule will force them to show up every week ready compete. And with just three starters back on both sides of the football, they’ll be relying on some new faces to tackle that challenge.
Young Abilene High Eagles poised for turnaround
Last season, an inexperienced Abilene High squad was forced into one uncomfortable situation after another during a difficult 3-7 campaign.
After graduating 30 lettermen, the Eagles may actually be younger in 2018, but coach Del Van Cox feels the experience his youth gained last year should give this year’s team a better chance to compete at a high level.
The injuries and lack of depth that forced a number of sophomores and juniors into action a year ago have resulted in a more seasoned group this fall. And with twice as many lettermen back this year (32) as last (16), the Eagles are expecting a strong bounce-back performance.
