TOLAR FEATURE: Laminack makes the jump from home-schooled to varsity standout

Action shots courtesy of Rattler High School Athletics

Anson Laminack

TOLAR — Three years ago, Tolar’s Anson Laminack was a skinny freshman attending public school for the first time. He wanted to play football at THS, so he signed up without a single snap of experience.

To say it was an adjustment is an understatement. The challenge of acclimating to public school life after years of being home schooled was difficult enough. But throw in his efforts to learn a complex, violent game such as football and Laminack spent much of that first year learning the ropes.

“(Going from home schooling to public) was pretty big,” the 17-year-old said. “I had never been in a public school. Then I started summer workouts for football and didn’t know anybody.

“It definitely wasn’t easy.”

Flash forward to 2025 and Laminack, now a senior, is a solid defensive back who will likely spend his final season doubling as a slot receiver. And he’s expected to have a significant impact on both sides of the ball.

2025 TOLAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Young Rattlers have abundant skill but need lines to jell in order to win district

TOLAR — With only four starters returning on both sides of the ball among just 14 lettermen, the Tolar Rattlers will have a number of key questions to answer heading into the 2025 season.

At the top of that list will be in replacing standout running back Peyton Brown, who will be competing at Hardin-Simmons University this fall. Secondly, can the Rattlers rebuild their offensive and defensive fronts quick enough to be ready for district play?

And lastly, can Tolar field a team that is on a par with last year’s 11-2 squad that pushed three rounds deep into postseason play?

  • ALL BIG COUNTRY PREPS SOFTBALL: First-Team Selections
  • ALL BIG COUNTRY PREPS SOFTBALL: Second-Team Selections (plus honorable mention)

Our All-Big Country Preps Softball and Baseball Teams, released Saturday and Sunday, respectively, are in place to honor those who achieved the most on-field success in 2025. It is off the field, however, where character, grit, and work ethic are often measured. And it is with our Big Country Preps All-Hustle Team that we wish to honor those players, male and female, who were (simply put) the hardest-working, best teammates in the area this spring.

This team isn’t about who the best baseball and softball players were.

The All-Hustle team honors effort, discipline, toughness, coachability and selflessness — traits that coaches wish they had in every player and upon which championships are built.

It is for that reason that this team is largely selected by area coaches and described in their own words.

Big Country Preps is now honored to present these individuals to you — the best team players (boys and girls) that the Big Country had to offer during the 2025 season.

The players below are listed in no particular order.

REGIONAL TRACK: Wall, Gordon take boys regional titles; Eula snags 1A girls regional championsip

ABILENE — Both teams had dominated the Big Country and surrounding area for the entire track season, so few were stunned on Saturday when both Wall and Gordon captured the Region I-3A and II-1A boys championships at Abilene Christian University’s Elmer Gray Stadium.

It completed a near clean sweep of the regional meets from teams in the Big Country Preps coverage area, with Eula taking the 1A girls title and Wall finishing second to Holliday in the 3A girls regional meet.

“That’s always awesome ,” Wall coach Craig Slaughter said of taking the regional team title. “You have to have talented kids who perform at the right time.

“We just had some monster performances all weekend long. Kid after kid PR’d and we just had an incredible couple of days.”

REGION I-3A TRACK MEET: Area athletes nab 12 field event medals on first day

ABILENE — Area athletes got off to a successful start at the Region I-3A track meet, combining to collect 13 medals and earn nine automatic berths to the state track meet during the event’s first day Friday at Abilene Christian University’s Elmer Gray Stadium.

With expected overnight storms pushing all field events to Friday, male competitors from the Big Country Preps coverage area tallied seven total medals — four golds, a silver and two bronzes — while area girls athletes claimed six medals, earning two of each shade.

The big winner Friday was the Wall boys, who accounted for five of those medals on their way to an early lead in the team race. The Hawks, who earned 42 points take a 22-point lead on second-place Idalou, will try to close out the team championship when the meet continues at 2 p.m. Saturday with the running finals.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Wall’s Jones takes the award with spectacular effort at area meet

The best way to describe the area meet performance of our Big Country Preps Player of the Week (Wall’s Briggs Jones) is to simply let his coach, Craig Slaughter do the talking.

“He ran a blistering 10.41 to set a school record and win the 100 meters,” Slaughter said. “He broke his long jump record with a jump of 23-11.5. I only let him jump twice because he was running out of room in the pit and I need that dude cranked up this week.

“Then he destroyed his triple jump record with a jump of 48-7.25

GAME STORY: Eastland maintains slight hold on high seed with 16-3 win over Tolar

EASTLAND — A combination of speed and power was on full display on Tuesday, as the Eastland Lady Mavericks handed visiting Tolar a 16-3 mercy rule loss at the Linda Morren Diamond Park Softball Field.

Eastland pounded out 13 total hits, including six doubles and two triples to put the game way. Much of that power was concentrated in an explosive 11-run third inning that turned a 5-2 EHS lead into a 16-2 runaway.

Jayci Majors was 2-for-3 with two triples and three RBIs and Adyson Carroll was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Lady Mavs (15-8, 8-3) which maintained a half-game lead over Comanche for the No. 2 playoff seed with the win.

Tolar (13-11, 6-5) was led by Jorgia Reed, who was 2 for 2 with a double and Kaira Krause, who was 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Evan Ren’s 2025 Gym Rat Team: The hardest-working players in the Big Country!

While scoring and rebounding garner much of the attention in basketball, there are other elements, crucial to success that seldom grab headlines.

Behind the scenes is where character, effort and sacrifice set the foundation for teams to reach their full potential. And it is with our Big Country Preps Gym Rat Team that we salute the individuals who bring these elements to the table.

This team isn’t about who the best players are — though some of the area’s top players are on this list.

The Gym Rat Team is about outworking, outhustling and outgiving everyone around you, both on the floor and off. Hard-working, honest, selfless, tough, coachable kids are what we seek for this roster.

A Gym Rat Team member can be your best player or the last player off the bench. But the one thing all of them bring is an uncompromisingly good attitude.

It is for that reason that our Gym Rat Team is selected entirely by area coaches. And Big Country Preps is truly honored to present these individuals to you — the best “team players” (boys and girls) that the area had to offer during the 2024-25 season.

Players are listed in no particular order.

Enjoy.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Stamford softballer takes the top spot

For two years, Stamford’s Emma Follis has been one of our area’s elite softball players, both as a pitcher and a hitter.

Last week, Follis picked up right where she left off a year ago, notching a 3-1 record in the circle with 35 strikeouts at the Slaton Tournament.

She was even better at the plate, hitting .714 with a triple, four homers and nine RBIs.

At this rate her numbers could be staggering by season’s end. And keep in mind, many of these games were shortened to accommodate the tournament schedule.

In several shortened games Emma came out hot in the circle and at the plate,” coach Sean Slavis said. “We are pumped to finally be playing again!”

GAME STORY: Imel’s 33-point outburst fuels Tolar to thrilling win over Wall

BROWNWOOD — As expected coming in to the Region I-3A Division II area-round matchup between Tolar and Wall, there wasn’t much separating the Lady Rattlers and Lady Hawks on Tuesday night at Warren Gym.

But only one of the teams had Senne Imel — a fact that proved the difference in a 53-48 Tolar win.

THS’ senior shooting guard poured in a game-high 33 points to lead the Lady Rattlers (24-10), who also got nine points from sophomore point guard Jaycee Jones in earning a trip to the region semifinals to take on 11th-ranked Idalou (27-9) next week at a time, date and place to be announced.

Evan Ren’s 2024 True Grit Team: The toughest, hardest-working players in the Big Country!

We all know a football player who almost never misses any practice time and practically lives in the weight room. He’s always early to arrive and late to leave. He’s coachable, but seldom needs direction because he always pays attention.

You know who I’m talking about.

The guy who sets a good example for young players. The guy who never complains and, first and foremost, is tough mentally and physically. He may not be the best player on a team (though some of them are). But he’s definitely the guy who gets the most out of the talent he’s given.

Welcome to the 2024 “True Grit” team — the one place in the Big Country where guys who fall into this category are recognized for it.
