Here are the Big Country’s rushing leaders through Week 4:
Hawley’s Keagan Ables is no stranger to the Big Country Preps Player of the Week column — appearing among our top performers multiple times over the last three years.
However, his latest effort to help HHS defeat De Leon 54-21 on Friday, may rank as one of his best.
The Hawley senior connected on 16 of 32 passes for 441 yards and six touchdowns to help Hawley improve to 4-0 on the year.
Here are the district standings for all 11-man football districts involving Big Country schools after Week 4 (with results and upcoming games):

Midland Legacy 62, Abilene High 42 — Sophomore J.P. Reyes set a single-game school record for passing yards, throwing for 422 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Rebels past the Eagles.
Legacy, which big receiving days from Aiden Serrano (9-197, 4 TDs) and Kayden Iglesias (4-116, 1 TD) put up 49 points in the first half, taking a three-touchdown lead into halftime that it would increase to 62-21 by the start of the fourth quarter.
Abilene Cooper 53, Lubbock Coronado 7 — JQ Scroggins and Peyton Ewing both eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark, and the CHS defense was dominant as the Cougars broke into the win column with a blowout victory over the Mustangs.
Scroggins ran for 137 yards and a touchdown, while Ewing rushed for 102 yards and a score of his own to help lead a 359-yard rushing effort for Cooper (1-3), which also got 119 yards and two touchdowns passing from Austin Cummins and 56 yards and one TD receiving from Zavian Alexander.

LUBBOCK — The Cooper football team broke into the win column in dominant fashion Friday, outgaining Lubbock Coronado 492-148 in a 53-7 win at Lowrey Field.
After dropping their first three games by a combined 20 points, the Cougars took control of this one quickly, following a scoreless first quarter with 21 unanswered points in the second before increasing their lead to 40-0 by the end of the third.
With the victory, Cooper closed the nondistrict portion of its schedule at 1-3, giving the Coogs some positive momentum heading into next week’s District 2-5A Division II opener at Wichita Falls Memorial.
The Stephenville offense was sharp as a tack and the defense came up with four big stops on its own end of the field Friday to spur the Yellow Jackets to a 49-27 win over Wylie in a battle of unbeatens at Hugh Sandifer Stadium.
SHS piled up 508 yards of offense, scoring on every full possession but one to build a 28-7 halftime lead and tamp down a Wylie rally after the break, spoiling the Bulldogs’ homecoming with its fourth consecutive win to open the season.
Wylie, which finished with 481 total yards, passed for 377. But four fruitless trips into Stephenville territory proved too much to overcome in a game that was never closer than 14 points after halftime.
The Abilene High defense learned the hard way on Friday night that records are made to be broken in a 62-42 loss to longtime rival Midland Legacy at Shotwell Stadium.
Sophomore J.P. Reyes set the Rebels’ single-game passing record by throwing for 422 yards and six scores in his first career start, while senior wide receiver Aiden Serrano’s nine catches gave him sole possession of the school’s career record for receptions.
All of that came from a Class 6A squad that entered the night 0-3 on the year after not shying away from playing high quality opponents Allen, Euless Trinity and Austin Lake Travis.
While every week in the Big Country promises its share of intriguing matchups involving area six-man teams, few can match the Week 4 slate in that regard.
With no fewer than four or five games worthy of “Game of the Week” designation, this week could deliver some of the most thrilling nondistrict matchups this season has to offer.

Week 3 of the Big Country six-man season was another exciting one as we learned more about the area’s top teams.
There weren’t many surprises or as many close games as we had in Week 2, but the slate was not without its thrilling finishes and general intrigue.
Here’s a look back at the week that was. We hope you enjoy reading through it and encourage you to check out our Six-Man/Class 1A Central page for district standings and additional information.
Odessa Permian 42, Abilene High 37 — The Eagles rallied from down 19 points at halftime to give themselves a chance to take the lead in the fourth quarter, but a late turnover on downs in the red zone ended their hopes of a dramatic comeback win.
AHS (2-1), which trailed 35-16 at the break, ran for 375 of its 479 yards, getting big games from quarterback Brayden Henry (18-224, 3 TDs) and Ethan Joyner (21-127, 1 TD). But the Eagles’ struggles to slow the Panthers offense proved too much to overcome.
Wylie 41, Lubbock Coronado 12 — After a slow start, the Bulldogs pulled away from the Mustangs, scoring 34 unanswered points to turn a 12-7 second-quarter deficit into a blowout win.
Bear Meng passed for 169 yards and two touchdowns, while Jaegan Smith (10-111, 1 TD) and Julius Laine (5-74, 2 TDs) led a 295-yard rushing attack in the win, which improved Wylie to 2-0 on the year.

Heading to the fourth quarter down 24-7, the Cooper football team rallied to score 20 unanswered points and take a lead on San Angelo Central in the final four minutes Friday at Shotwell Stadium.
But the 3:41 left on the clock after the Cougars’ go-ahead touchdown proved too much time in a gut-wrenching 31-27 loss to the Bobcats.
Taking possession at its own 25, Central drove 75 yards in 10 plays, converting three third downs — including a third-and-10 from its own 37-yard line, to regain the lead for good with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Christian English to Mason Van. That score, combined with an interception on the first play of the Cougars’ ensuing possession, allowed the Bobcats (1-2) to celebrate their first win under new coach Mark Smith, while dropping Cooper to 0-3.
ODESSA — The Abilene High football team rallied from down 19 points at halftime to give itself a chance to take the lead in the fourth quarter Thursday against Odessa Permian, but a late turnover on downs in the red zone left the Eagles on the wrong side of a 42-37 decision at Ratliff Stadium.
After trading scores with the Panthers to start the game, AHS lost pace with Permian, which scored on every possession but one in the first half on its way to a 35-16 halftime advantage.
The Eagles tightened up on defense after halftime, limiting their former Little Southwest Conference rival to a single fourth-quarter touchdown, but that was enough for the Panthers to escape with a thrilling win thanks to a late defensive stand.

LUBBOCK — Trailing 12-7 early in the second quarter, the Wylie football team responded with 34 unanswered points to bury Lubbock Coronado 41-12 in a nondistrict matchup Thursday at Lowrey Field.
The Bulldogs scored 20 points in the second quarter and tacked on two more touchdowns in the third to put the game away before the start of a scoreless final period.
Coach Clay Martin’s team racked up 464 yards, including 295 on the ground, while limiting the Mustangs to just 205 total yards in improving to 2-0 on the season.

Sometimes, the biggest stage creates the biggest performances.
And in the Big Country, the stage doesn’t get any bigger than the annual Abilene – Abilene Cooper matchup — one of the biggest rivalries in the state of Texas and arguably the biggest in our area (though you may get an argument from Brownwood-Stephenville).
Friday night with much of the city of Abilene paying attention, AHS quarterback Brayden Henry had a memorable night, hitting 15 of 19 throws for 216 yards passing and two TDs.
Abilene High 42, Cooper 33 — Brayden Henry passed for 216 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 144 yards and three more scores to lead the Eagles to their third straight win against their crosstown rival Cougars.
AHS (2-0) held a two-score lead on three different occasions, but each time Cooper (0-2) rallied to pull back within striking distance. The last saw the Cougars trim the deficit to 35-33 with a chance to tie the game at the 7:08 mark of the fourth quarter, but CHS couldn’t complete the two-point conversion and the Eagles sealed the win with an Etan Joyner touchdown a minute later.
Wylie 29, Lubbock Monterey 28 — Bear Meng passed for 277 yards and two touchdowns while adding another score on the ground to fuel the Bulldogs to a season-opening win over the Plainsmen.
Wylie, which had its Week 1 game at Brownwood canceled by lightning, led 20-14 at halftime and 26-14 early in the third quarter, before Monterey (0-2) responded with back-to-back touchdowns to enter the fourth quarter with a 28-26 lead. The score stayed there until the 3:42 mark of the final period, when Noah Rehburg hit a 25-yard field goal for what proved to be the winning points.

Cooper pushed Abilene High deep into the fourth quarter Friday in the 64th annual Crosstown Showdown, but in the end, quarterback Brayden Henry and the Eagles offense was just too much for the Cougars to handle in a 42-33 victory at Shotwell Stadium.
The electric junior passed for 216 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 144 yards and three more scores to fuel coach Mike Fullen’s squad, which never trailed in earning its third consecutive victory over its archrival.
The Cougars rallied from three two-score deficits to give themselves a chance to tie the game with just over seven minutes remaining, but Abilene High made a stop on a two-point conversion attempt and countered with one final touchdown drive to seal the game midway through the final period.
With the way the second half had gone, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Gio Cardenas was going to hit a walk-off 30-yard field goal for Lubbock Monterey on Friday night at Hugh Sandifer Stadium.
Wylie, meanwhile, was sending the house to try and block the attempt to win its season opener after having last week’s game against Brownwood canceled by lightning.
In the end, Monterey sophomore holder Noah Alexander couldn’t handle the snap, allowing the Bulldogs to escape with a thrilling 29-28 win.

LAST WEEK: 48-20, .705
SEASON TOTAL: 48-20, .705

I’m not going to deny that I have an endless fascination with old-fashioned offenses. And I’m not going to deny that I’m a bit eager to see Eastland’s jump to the Wing-T after more than a decade of slinging the ball all over the field.
But this has little to do with why Eastland (1-0) and Clyde (1-0) will be hooking up in our Big Country Preps Game of the Week.
The fact that both clubs are coming off quality wins — Clyde beating Cisco 43-42 in OT and Eastland stopping Coleman 21-6 — creates enough intrigue to snag the top spot. Add the fact that you have a modern spread offense going against an attack that was devised more than 70 years ago and you’re looking at a game with potential to get the spotlight.
And courtesy of a beat-up Brownwood team, this contest made the top of our list.
DE LEON — Entering this football it was expected that De Leon junior quarterback Heston Jobe would be among the top producers in the Big Country.
It took him all of one night to prove it in a 79-43 win over Dublin on Friday.
Jobe, who connected on 13 of 20 throws for 413 yards and four scores, also rushed for 176 yards and four more TDs.
By night’s end, the Bearcats were 1-0 and Jobe had accounted for 589 yards and five touchdowns.
Abilene High 60, San Angelo Central 36 — Ryland Bradford caught five passes for 154 yards and three touchdowns and added a 32-yard scoring run on a lateral swing pass to fuel an explosive offensive effort for the Eagles against the Bobcats.
Quarterback Brayden Henry also had a big day, passing for 205 yards and three touchdowns while adding a receiving score for the Eagles, who outscored Central 17-0 in the fourth quarter to turn a one-score game into a rout.
Central was led in the loss by quarterback Christian “Squeaky” English, who threw three touchdown passes and ran for two scores in the loss.
Azle 41, Abilene Cooper 34 — Leading 20-19 at halftime, the Cougars couldn’t hold off the Hornets in the second half, being outscored 22-14 over the final two quarters to drop a thriller in the season opener for both teams.
Hagan Hughes rushed for 202 yards and two touchdowns and King Stephens added 108 yards and three touchdowns on the ground for Azle, which also got 191 yards and one TD passing from Derrek Vowell in a 485-yard effort.
Cooper, which had 333 yards of total offense, was led in rushing by Peyton Ewing (14-74), in passing by Austin Cummins (16-29-0—195, 2 TDs) and in receiving by Zavian Alexander (6-95, 1 TD).

SAN ANGELO — The Abilene High offense scored early and often, and the Eagles got enough from their young defense to pull away late for a 60-36 win over San Angelo Central in the season opener for both teams Friday at San Angelo Stadium.
AHS used a fast start to build an early lead and a strong fourth quarter to finally put away the Bobcats in a game that was tight through the first three periods.
The Eagles never trailed, but they led by just six (28-22) at halftime and seven (43-36) heading into the fourth quarter, before outscoring Central 17-0 in the decisive final quarter to open their season on a winning note.
