Football is just around the corner, and we at BigCountryPreps.com are committed to bringing you the information you need to prepare for your favorite team’s season.
We’ll be releasing our Big Country Preps Preseason Football Preview, the most comprehensive look at the upcoming Big Country football season anywhere, on Wednesday, Aug. 20. But you won’t have to wait until then to sate your gridiron appetite.
Leading up to the first day of fall football practice on Aug. 4, we’ll be spotlighting each 11-man team in the area and posing some of the key questions they’ll face in 2025 as part of our annual “Countdown to Two-a-Days” series.
We start in Class 2A Division II with the Haskell Indians. On Saturday we will take a look at the Albany Lions, followed by the Cross Plains Buffaloes on Sunday.

WOLFFORTH — With outfield dimensions of only 198, 198 and 198 feet, along with a stiff wind blowing out to left field, it seemed only a matter of time before softballs began leaving the park in Game 1 of the Region I-2A DII championship series between Sundown and Haskell on Thursday.
Unfortunately for Haskell, it was Sundown which played longball throughout the afternoon in a five-inning 13-3 mercy rule win for the Roughettes.
Brynly Gregory was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a walk-off solo homer to activate the mercy rule and give Sundown a 1-0 lead in the series. Game 2 will take place on Friday at Wylie beginning at 3 p.m.

CLYDE — Paige Sheets was dominant in the circle and her teammates gave her plenty of run support, scoring early and often as the Haskell Maidens opened the Region I-2A Division II playoffs with a 12-0 run-rule victory over Ballinger on Friday at the Hanner Sports Complex.
Sheets struck out 10 in a five-inning shutout, limiting the Lady Cats to just three hits, while she and her teammates roughed up Ballinger for 12 hits, including a pair of doubles and two home runs.
The end result was a thorough victory that pushes the Maidens into next week’s area round, where they will face off with Reagan County, which easily dispatched of Eldorado in its bi-district playoff.

The best way to describe the area meet performance of our Big Country Preps Player of the Week (Wall’s Briggs Jones) is to simply let his coach, Craig Slaughter do the talking.
“He ran a blistering 10.41 to set a school record and win the 100 meters,” Slaughter said. “He broke his long jump record with a jump of 23-11.5. I only let him jump twice because he was running out of room in the pit and I need that dude cranked up this week.
“Then he destroyed his triple jump record with a jump of 48-7.25
While scoring and rebounding garner much of the attention in basketball, there are other elements, crucial to success that seldom grab headlines.
Behind the scenes is where character, effort and sacrifice set the foundation for teams to reach their full potential. And it is with our Big Country Preps Gym Rat Team that we salute the individuals who bring these elements to the table.
This team isn’t about who the best players are — though some of the area’s top players are on this list.
The Gym Rat Team is about outworking, outhustling and outgiving everyone around you, both on the floor and off. Hard-working, honest, selfless, tough, coachable kids are what we seek for this roster.
A Gym Rat Team member can be your best player or the last player off the bench. But the one thing all of them bring is an uncompromisingly good attitude.
It is for that reason that our Gym Rat Team is selected entirely by area coaches. And Big Country Preps is truly honored to present these individuals to you — the best “team players” (boys and girls) that the area had to offer during the 2024-25 season.

At the Class 1A level, where it is common for athletes to participate in multiple sports at the same time due to a lack of numbers, individuals who excel in different disciplines are invaluable.
At Gordon, junior multi-sport star Stryker Reed falls into this category, and our Big Country Preps Player of the Week is now demonstrating it on the heels of an amazing effort.

In a departure from their past three hires, Haskell CISD announced on Friday that it was hiring Wellington offensive coordinator Creighton Henderson as its new head football coach and athletic director.
This marks Henderson’s first time to lead a program and he’s the first person to land their inaugural head coaching job in Haskell since Kent Colley in 2008.
Henderson, who will start after spring break, is excited for the opportunity and getting back to a familiar area after getting his college degree from Hardin-Simmons.
EASTLAND — The Haskell girls basketball team entered Thursday’s Region II-2A Division II area-round game against Crawford expecting a low-scoring, defense-intensive game at Eastland High School.
What the Maidens weren’t prepared for was an 8-0 run in the first two minutes of the game that put the Lady Pirates on top and left Haskell chasing all night.
Despite rallying to take their first lead of the night on a shot by Kayce Coleman with 6:43 to play, the Maidens saw their season come to an end with a 34-28 loss.

National Signing Day is typically a busy one in the Big Country Preps’ coverage area and 2025 was no exception with several players inking and/or confirming their commitments to play at the next level.

We all know a football player who almost never misses any practice time and practically lives in the weight room. He’s always early to arrive and late to leave. He’s coachable, but seldom needs direction because he always pays attention.
You know who I’m talking about.
The guy who sets a good example for young players. The guy who never complains and, first and foremost, is tough mentally and physically. He may not be the best player on a team (though some of them are). But he’s definitely the guy who gets the most out of the talent he’s given.

A coaching staple in the Big County is retiring after a 33-year career in the profession.
Mitch McLemore is stepping down from Haskell after a four-year run with the Indians that included three playoff appearances. McLemore has also spent time coaching in area towns Knox City, Big Spring and Stamford, where he helped win two state titles as the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator.
“I’m going to be 59 in March, and 50 of those years I’ve either been a coach’s son, player or doing this,” McLemore said. “Half a century of my life has been associated with athletics and education in some sort of form and fashion.”
Electra 33, Haskell 26 — The Tigers took advantage of two kickoff return touchdowns and a fumble return for a score to end the Indians’ playoff hopes with a hard-fought win.
With the help of those non-offensive touchdowns and a 3-2 advantage in the turnover margin, Electra (8-2, 4-2) took a 33-20 lead into halftime and held Haskell off in the second half.
LAST WEEK: 45-8, .849
SEASON TOTAL: 464-122, .791
The regular season ends Friday night (if you can believe it) and there’s no better way to close things up than with No. 5 Class 2A DI Hawley (9-0, 4-0) at No. 1 Stamford (9-0, 4-0).
The winner will earn the District 4 championship and No. 1 seed heading into the playoffs, so much is at stake.
I’m leaning toward Stamford here for three reasons: First, the overall team speed of SHS is unmatched by anyone in the area.
Secondly, the Bulldogs have an intangible working here — specifically a last-second miracle touchdown scored by Hawley’s
Camden Ables from 45 yards out with 0:47 left in last year’s game.
