GAME STORY: Wylie boys, girls fall at home to San Angelo Central

It’s not often you leave a 15-point loss feeling better about yourself, but such was the case for coach Gregg Ruffin and his Wylie Bulldogs on Tuesday in their nondistrict matchup with San Angelo Central.

When clock hit zeros and the final buzzer sounded at Bulldog Gym, the scoreboard showed the home team on the wrong end of a 64-49 tally.

But after watching his young squad push the 10-1 Bobcats to the limit for the better part of three quarters, Ruffin was upbeat about the Bulldogs’ effort and what it might mean going forward.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sweetwater’s Foster takes the top spot

He might be better known as one of the top receivers in the Big Country — hauling in 78 catches for more than 1,300 yards for Sweetwater’s football team in 2021.

What some don’t realize is, Harrison Foster is also one of the area’s top basketballers, as evidenced by his taking our Capital Farm Credit-BCP Player of the Week award for the week ending Dec. 4.

GAME STORY: Cooper girls pull away from crosstown rival Abilene High for 53-39 victory

The Cooper girls basketball team overcame an early challenge from a hot-shooting Abilene High squad Tuesday to earn a 53-39 win over its crosstown rival at Cougar Gym.

The Lady Cougars trailed on three occasions in the first quarter as the Lady Eagles knocked down three of their eight 3-pointers in the opening period. But coach Arsenio Geter’s squad closed the first half on a 15-7 run to go to halftime with a seven-point lead and held off one last push by AHS in the third quarter before finally putting the Lady Eagles away in the fourth.

Guards Karrigan Parrott and Kyla Speights fueled the effort for the Lady Coogs, scoring 16 and 13 points, respectively, to put their team back above .500 at 5-4.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Stephenville linebacker Young takes award once again

It’s not easy for defensive players to wrestle the spotlight away from those on offense. It’s just the nature of things.

But in the case of Stephenville linebacker Reese Young, he’s beginning to make a habit of it.

Young, who charted 22 tackles (14 solos) in SHS’ 21-17 regional semifinal win over Argyle last week is our Capital Farm Credit/BCP Player of the Week for a second time this year.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dublin’s Teten earns honor with historic effort

With a huge passing game in Dublin’s 41-35 area-round win over Palmer, junior Chris Teten put up numbers worthy of our Capital Farm Credit/Big Country Preps Player of the Week award.

But it’s only once you grasp the historical significance of the Lions’ win over the Bulldogs on Friday that you gain a full appreciation for the junior’s performance.

In hitting 19 of 26 passes for 406 yards and six touchdowns — all of which were needed to escape Joshua’s Owl Stadium with a victory — Teten was objectively excellent behind center for the Lions. Now for the kicker: the win over Palmer marked the first area-round victory in the history of the Dublin program, which is significant considering the school has been playing football for more than a century.

TOURNAMENT RECAP: Jim Ned girls blaze through Pug Parris Classic to remain unbeaten

The Jim Ned girls basketball team topped El Paso Mountain View 58-42 on Saturday at McMurry University’s Kimbrel Arena to complete a perfect run through the inaugural Pug Parris Classic and claim the tournament championship.

The No. 13 Lady Indians, who earned their spot in the title game with impressive wins over El Paso Ysleta (70-26), Lubbock Trinity Christian (69-32) and Wylie (47-36), raced out to a 17-8 first-quarter lead on Mountain View and were never threatened after in improving to 7-0 on the season.

Jim Ned’s run to the title completed a successful first run for the Pug Parris Classic, which was started by McMurry this year when the Hardin-Simmons University-hosted Polk-Key City Classic — believed to be the longest-running girls basketball tournament in the state — was not resumed.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hico sophomore Booth earns the spotlight

Big numbers will generally get one strong consideration for our Capital Farm Credit/Big Country Preps Player of the Week award. But when those numbers come against a team from a much larger classification, it quickly makes us take notice.

Class 2A Hico’s Grace Booth did exactly that last week in a 61-57 win over Class 4A Mineral Wells, dominating both ends of the floor to lead the Lady Tigers in their season opener.

Aside from the 40 points she poured in, Booth snagged 10 rebounds to chart a double-double. She also forced multiple turnovers (viewable on the video above), including three steals.

GAME STORY: Coleman’s Allen, San Saba’s Adams fuel South to FCA All-Stars win over North

BROWNWOOD — Coleman post Abbi Allen was a force on both ends of the floor Saturday at Brownwood High School’s Warren Gym, teaming up with San Saba guard Brighton Adams to fuel the South All-Stars to a 52-39 win over the North in the 12th playing of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes women’s basketball all-star game.

Allen scored 12 points to go with five steals and three blocks, earning the event’s MVP award for her work, while Adams went 4 for 6 from the field and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to lead all scorers with 13 points.

That duo helped the South outscore the North 28-15 over the final two quarters to turn a tie game at halftime into a double-digit win.

Evan Ren’s 2021 Gym Rat Team: The toughest, hardest-working teammates in the Big Country

While scoring and rebounding garner much of the attention in basketball, there are other elements, crucial to success, that seldom grab headlines.

Behind the scenes is where character, effort and sacrifice set the foundation for teams to reach their full potential. And it is with our Big Country Preps Gym Rat Team that we salute the individuals who bring these elements to the table.

This team isn’t about who the best players are — though some of the area’s top players are on this list.

The Gym Rat Team is about outworking, outhustling and outgiving everyone around you, both on the floor and off. Hard-working, honest, selfless, tough, coachable kids are what we seek for this roster.

A Gym Rat Team member can be your best player or the last player off the bench. But the one thing all of them bring is an uncompromisingly good attitude.

It is for that reason that our Gym Rat Team is selected entirely by area coaches. And Big Country Preps is truly honored to present these individuals to you — the best “team players” (boys and girls) that the area had to offer during the 2020-21 season.

Players are listed in no particular order.

Enjoy.

GAME RECAP: Westbrook girls’ dream run ends with loss to No. 2 Nazareth in state semis

Photos by Mackenzie Teal, Press Pass Sports

WOLFFORTH — The Westbrook girls basketball team’s historic run came to an end Friday as the Lady Cats fell to Nazareth 48-17 in their state semifinal matchup at Frenship High School.

WHS, which was playing in the state tournament for the first time in school history, fell behind early and was never able to regroup against the No. 2 Swiftettes, who will go for their state record 25th state championship Wednesday against top-ranked Dodd City.

PREVIEW: Westbrook girls look to keep historic run going against state power Nazareth

Coming off an impressive run through the Region II-1A bracket that required wins over Highland (48-36), Roby (60-27), No. 8 May (45-33), No. 4 Veribest (54-45) and No. 12 Rankin (62-41), the 13th-ranked Westbrook Lady Cats enter the Class 1A state semifinals with an abundance of confidence.

And why shouldn’t they? They’ve won nine of their last 10 games to improve to 26-4 on the year, while claiming their first district title since 1980 and their first state tournament berth in program history.

But waiting on the other side of the curtain, as a result of and reward for all that achievement, is Westbrook’s biggest challenge to date — a matchup with the most successful girls basketball program the state of Texas has ever seen.

In the Nazareth Swiftettes, with whom the Lady Cats will tangle at 7 p.m. Friday at Wolfforth Frenship, WHS will not only bear the burden of facing the No. 2 team in the state, it also will be tasked with matching the poise and composure of a program that’s making its 30th trip to the state semifinals and is in search of its 25th state championship.

GAME STORY: Westbrook survives Rankin pressure to earn first state tournament berth

Leading 19-9 at after one quarter in Tuesday’s Region II-1A title game with Rankin, Westbrook coach Jeff Bontrager had a difficult decision to make.

Would he continue to allow his girls to take advantage of Rankin’s pressure defense, thereby taking the Lady Cats into a tempo for which they were entirely unaccustomed? Or would he slow things down a bit, hoping that his team could still find ways to score without turning the ball over?

Bontrager elected to adjust tempo and it paid off with a 62-41 win at Wylie High School.

Bailey Connell scored a game-high 20 points and Madison Munoz added 10 more to lead Westbrook (26-4) which now advances to the state tournament for the first time in the history of the WHS girls program.

Rankin closed its season at 28-2, led by Madison Jenkins with 15 and Emily Bunger with 14.

GAME STORY: Huge fourth-quarter run fuels No. 12 Rankin past Hermleigh girls

For 20 of the 32 minutes in Monday’s Region II-1A semifinal game against Rankin, the youthful Hermleigh Lady Cardinals looked poised to knock off the No. 12 Lady Devils and continue their unlikely playoff run yet another round.

But leading 32-20 at the midway point of the third quarter, the Lady Cards’ youth got the better of them.

Led by seniors Emily Bunger, Jelcie Tubbs and Neveah Cura, Rankin closed the third quarter on a 7-2 run to pull back within seven by the start of the fourth , and Hermleigh could never stop the bleeding after that. The Lady Devils’ game-closing surge eventually reached 29-4 as RHS turned a 12-point deficit into a 49-36 win at Wylie’s Bulldog Gym.

GAME STORY: No. 13 Westbrook girls take down fourth-ranked Veribest, earn spot in II-1A title game

The No. 13 Westbrook girls basketball team took a narrow lead early and held off fourth-ranked Veribest the rest of the way Monday to secure a 51-45 win in the first of two Region II-1A semifinal games at Wylie’s Bulldog Gym.

After pushing out to a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Cats never led by more than five points until the final period. But Westbrook (25-4) kept the defending region champion Lady Falcons from ever making a significant run and made their free throws down the stretch to earn a date with No. 12 Rankin at 8 p.m. Tuesday back at Bulldog Gym for the II-1A championship.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Morrison takes home this week’s accolade

When one hears the name of Trace Morrison, the first thing that may come to mind among Big Country Sports fans is Stephenville’s utility man extraordinaire who earned All-Big Country Preps honors as a receiver, punter and place-kicker.

Well, you’ve got the right guy. You’ve just got the wrong sport this time around.

As it turns out, Morrison is also one of the area’s top baseball players, as evidenced by him taking our Capital Farm Credit/Big Country Preps Player of the Week award for the week ending Feb. 27.

GAME STORY: Shallowater defense shuts down Jim Ned in 55-34 win

CHILDRESS — The Jim Ned girls fully understood the challenge they faced in Friday’s Region I-3A semfinal with defending state champion Shallowater. But the Lady Indians still arrived at Childress High School with every intention of avenging last season’s 47-40 loss in the semis to the Fillies.

Nothing, however, could fully prepare the Lady Indians for the combination of defensive pressure and long-range sharpshooting Shallowater hit them with in a 55-34 SHS win.

Jenna Willer, Bree Brattain and Taylor Moravich scored 12, 11 and 10 points respectively to lead Shallowater (27-0), which extended its winning streak to 36 straight games dating back to last season.

GAME STORY: Hermleigh girls rally past Eula in Hopper’s return to Wylie

In the early 2010s, Hermleigh girls basketball coach Duane Hopper earned his stripes playing for the Wylie boys basketball team under coaches Russell Perkins and Gregg Ruffin.

Thursday night saw Hopper make his return to Bulldog Gym as the Lady Cardinals overcame an early deficit and withstood a fourth quarter rally by Eula to earn a 44-41 win and earn their fourth straight berth in the Region II-1A semifinals, all of which have come in Hopper’s four seasons on the bench.

With his history as a Bulldog, Hopper knew where his 103rd career win as a coach ranked in his memories of Bulldog Gym.

GAME STORY: Cisco stuns heavily favored Haskell, advances to regional tournament

TUSCOLA — Having already suffered a pair of sound defeats (65-46 and 59-49)  at the hands of Haskell in district play, the Cisco girls basketball team approached Tuesday’s regional quarterfinal with the Maidens without a hint of pressure.

All the stress, as it turned out, was on heavily favored Haskell, which suffered one of its worst shooting nights of the year in a stunning 44-41 upset loss to Cisco at Bill Thornton Arena.

Braley Brunson scored 12 points and Justice Fox added 10 more to lead the unranked Lady Loboes (17-8), who gradually build a 17-point lead by the end of the third quarter before absorbing a furious Haskell rally in the fourth.

No. 13 Haskell closed its season at 20-5, led by Delaney Hanson’s game-high 22 points. Savannah Camancho added seven more for the Maidens, which saw multiple shots from point-blank range fail to find the target with the help of some interior defense by the Lady Loboes.

GAME STORY: Jim Ned clamps down defensively to eliminate Holliday

BRECKENRIDGE — Entering Saturday’s 3A area round game with Holliday as a heavy favorite, the Jim Ned Lady Indians and their fans weren’t expecting a major scare from HHS.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Weather postpones this week’s award

Due to extensive event postponements and school cancellations caused by winter weather in the Big Country and throughout the state of Texas, nominations for this week’s Capital Farm Credit Big Country Preps Player of the Week were more limited than usual.
