GAME STORY: Bangs completes sweep of area series with 13-2 win over Forsan
SAN ANGELO — A fast start and steady pitching lifted the Bangs Lady Dragons to a 13-2 mercy rule win over Forsan to sweep their Region I-2A DI area round series on Saturday at the SAS Softball Complex.
Abby Wolf went the distance in the circle and was 3 of 4 with four RBIs while Neeley Bradley was 3-of-4 with two homers and four RBIs to lead Bangs (24-7) which pounded out a 9-0 lead in the first three innings and never looked back.
The Lady Dragons now advance to face Clarendon in the Region I semifinals; Forsan, which hurt itself with four errors, closed its season at 13-12, led by Ari Mealing who was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Wall’s Jones takes the award with spectacular effort at area meet
The best way to describe the area meet performance of our Big Country Preps Player of the Week (Wall’s Briggs Jones) is to simply let his coach, Craig Slaughter do the talking.
“He ran a blistering 10.41 to set a school record and win the 100 meters,” Slaughter said. “He broke his long jump record with a jump of 23-11.5. I only let him jump twice because he was running out of room in the pit and I need that dude cranked up this week.
“Then he destroyed his triple jump record with a jump of 48-7.25
Evan Ren’s 2025 Gym Rat Team: The hardest-working players in the Big Country!
While scoring and rebounding garner much of the attention in basketball, there are other elements, crucial to success that seldom grab headlines.
Behind the scenes is where character, effort and sacrifice set the foundation for teams to reach their full potential. And it is with our Big Country Preps Gym Rat Team that we salute the individuals who bring these elements to the table.
This team isn’t about who the best players are — though some of the area’s top players are on this list.
The Gym Rat Team is about outworking, outhustling and outgiving everyone around you, both on the floor and off. Hard-working, honest, selfless, tough, coachable kids are what we seek for this roster.
A Gym Rat Team member can be your best player or the last player off the bench. But the one thing all of them bring is an uncompromisingly good attitude.
It is for that reason that our Gym Rat Team is selected entirely by area coaches. And Big Country Preps is truly honored to present these individuals to you — the best “team players” (boys and girls) that the area had to offer during the 2024-25 season.

HIRING NEWS: Forsan tabs special teams guru Thompson to lead the Buffaloes

When he enrolled at Hardin-Simmons University as a student-athlete, Casey Thompson knew that if he wanted to find early playing time, he needed to find a niche.
What he found was a role on the Cowboys special teams unit that fostered what has turned into a love of what could be considered the most important part of the game.
After becoming one of the most respected special teams coordinators in the state, Thompson was named the 11th head football coach and athletic director at Forsan on Tuesday.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Comanche’s Alex Terrell takes this week’s spotlight
While it wasn’t a perfect two-game stretch for the Comanche boys basketball team, the Indians did clinch a postseason berth last week and one of their players earned the spotlight.
Comanche went 1-1 on the week, dropping a game against Tolar while securing a playoff spot Friday with a win over Breckenridge. In the meantime, senior guard Alex Terrell came up with two big efforts to capture our Big Country Preps Player of the Week.
Terrell put up solid numbers on both nights, beginning with 20 points, five rebounds and two steals in the Tolar loss. Three nights later, he finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals in a tough 32-26 win at Breck to clinch a postseason berth.

Evan Ren’s 2024 True Grit Team: The toughest, hardest-working players in the Big Country!
We all know a football player who almost never misses any practice time and practically lives in the weight room. He’s always early to arrive and late to leave. He’s coachable, but seldom needs direction because he always pays attention.
You know who I’m talking about.
The guy who sets a good example for young players. The guy who never complains and, first and foremost, is tough mentally and physically. He may not be the best player on a team (though some of them are). But he’s definitely the guy who gets the most out of the talent he’s given.
Welcome to the 2024 “True Grit” team — the one place in the Big Country where guys who fall into this category are recognized for it.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jim Ned’s Grohman takes this week’s spotlight
The fact that Riley Grohman is our Player of the Week should surprise no one, considering she was named to our All-Big Country Preps team last year. But when you toss in her stats — an all-encompassing set of numbers — it makes even more sense.
The senior guard was at the top of the stat sheet last week for the third-ranked Lady Indians, who swept Merkel (70-25) and Clyde (79-29) to improve to 24-2.
BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Forsan sophomore snags our final award of the 2024 calendar year
Our final Big Country Preps Player of the Week for 2024 earned it in several ways.
Forsan sophomore Coy Evans, a multi-talented guard who plays way ahead of the learning curve, takes our accolade after helping the Buffaloes to a 3-1 record and a third-place finish in the Borden County Tournament over the Weekend.
“He played very unselfish basketball,” Forsan coach Cory Richardson said. “He was getting other people involved and when we needed him to, he stepped up and scored.”
BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Wall quarterback grabs the spotlight with huge performance
Only a year removed from running a ground-based flexbone option attack, the Wall Hawks have managed to put that approach in the distant past with a remarkable effort through the air in 2024.
And who would have thought that making that difficult transition could have happened so quickly?
Now, having committed to a full-blown spread attack under new coach Craig Slaughter, the Hawks have already accumulated nearly 3,000 passing yards, placing them near the top in that category among Big Country teams.
DISTRICT 3-2A DIV. I WEEK 11 REPORT: Forsan can’t keep up with Reagan County; Sonora, Christoval score upsets
Reagan County 40, Forsan 6 — Jarrett Brown passed for 359 yards and four touchdowns, and three different players reached the century mark for receiving yards as the Owls cruised past the Buffaloes to wrap up a perfect run through district play.
Omrie Johnson (3-143, 2 TDs), Nicholas Franklin (6-100, 2 TDs) and Kason Brown (11-100) all eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark as Reagan County (9-1, 5-0) amassed 428 total yards as a team.
BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Stamford, Hawley clash in rematch of last season’s thriller
LAST WEEK: 45-8, .849
SEASON TOTAL: 464-122, .791
The regular season ends Friday night (if you can believe it) and there’s no better way to close things up than with No. 5 Class 2A DI Hawley (9-0, 4-0) at No. 1 Stamford (9-0, 4-0).
The winner will earn the District 4 championship and No. 1 seed heading into the playoffs, so much is at stake.
I’m leaning toward Stamford here for three reasons: First, the overall team speed of SHS is unmatched by anyone in the area.
Secondly, the Bulldogs have an intangible working here — specifically a last-second miracle touchdown scored by Hawley’s
Camden Ables from 45 yards out with 0:47 left in last year’s game.
BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: San Saba’s Tharp takes this week’s accolade
It’s not a requirement for one to be on the winning team to become eligible for our Big Country Preps Player of the Week award.
It helps, but it’s not set in stone, by any means.
Case in point: San Saba quarterback Luke Tharp, who produced big-time numbers in a 44-41 loss to Holland last week.
DISTRICT 3-2A DIV. I WEEK 10 REPORT: Ozona too much for Forsan; Reagan County rolls past C-City
Ozona 50, Forsan 28 — The Lions outscored the Buffaloes 36-8 over the middle two quarters to rally from an early deficit and pull away for a lopsided win.
Forsan gained 477 yards, getting 257 yards and two touchdowns passing Coy Evans and 221 yards and two TDs receiving from Hayden Bowlin, but it wasn’t enough in falling to 2-7 overall and 2-2 in district play. Huston Stockton also had a solid game for the Buffs, rushing for 93 yards and two scores in the loss.
DISTRICT 3-2A DIV. I WEEK 9 REPORT: Stockton leads Forsan past Christoval; Ozona, Reagan County earn wins
Forsan 36, Christoval 15 — Huston Stockton ran for 149 yard and three touchdowns, and Brayden Cervantes added 132 yards and one score on the ground to fuel the Buffaloes to a three-touchdown win over the Cougars.
Forsan, which led 22-15 at halftime before shutting Christoval out over the final two quarters, also got a solid game from quarterback Coy Evans (5-12-0—72, 1 TD passing; 3-23 rushing) in improving to 2-6 overall and 2-1 in district play.
BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Loboes play host to Hawley in Big Country Preps Game of the Week
LAST WEEK: 41-10 .803
SEASON TOTAL: 367-108, .772
Football season doesn’t feel complete without at least one visit to Chesley Field in Cisco. And Friday night, the Big Country Preps Game of the Week will stop by for a crucial District 4-2A DI matchup between the Loboes (5-2, 1-1) and Hawley (7-0, 2-0).
For Hawley, a win here will keep open the possibility of an unbeaten regular season. For Cisco, a victory would signal the beginning of a climb back into area prominence.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Albany’s Beal earns this week’s accolade
With the Albany Lions winning last week’s district game with Winters by a score of 60-0, there were ample opportunities for the Lions to produce a Player of the Week-worthy performance.
They found one in senior Branson Beal, who rushed 11 times for 144 yards and five scores. He also caught a 46-yard TD pass to chart six touchdowns on the night.
“He might have the quickest feet of any (player) I have coached,” Albany coach Denney Faith said. “Combine that with great vision it makes him fun to watch.”
DISTRICT 3-2A DIV. I WEEK 8 REPORT: Forsan runs wild in win over C-City; Ozona, Reagan County pick up victories
Forsan 55, Colorado City 22 — The Buffaloes broke into the win column in dominant fashion, rushing for 509 yards as a team in a blowout win over the Wolves.
Huston Stockton had a monster game for Forsan (1-6, 1-1), finishing with 241 yards and three TDs rushing on just 13 carries. Coy Evans (5-6-0—42, 2 TDs passing; 8-89 rushing), Brayden Cervantes (6-86, 2 TDs rushing) and Yandell Melendez (14-66, 1 TD rushing) also had productive days for the Buffs, who led 42-22 by halftime before putting the game away in the third quarter.
DISTRICT 3-2A DIV. I WEEK 7 REPORT: Sonora shuts out Forsan; Christoval pulls away from Colorado City
Sonora 52, Forsan 0 — Aaron Segura passed for 433 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Broncos to a blowout win over the Buffaloes.
Kam Aguero (5-155, 3 TDs) and Jorge Leija (8-120, 1 TD) both had big nights catching the ball for Sonora (4-2, 1-0), which led 20-0 at halftime, before tacking on 16 points in each of the final two quarters.
