District 5-3A Div. II Week 6 Report: Eastland outlasts Panhandle in slugfest
Eastland 91, Panhandle 71 — A track meet was anticipated, but it produced something well beyond that description.
An incredible 1,694 yards in combined total offense were produced in one of the highest-scoring games in Texas football history.
BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Hawley tangles with upstart Dragons (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country picks)
LAST WEEK: 36-12, .750
SEASON TOTAL: 152-47, .763
I have not been to Bangs for a Game of the Week since 2013 — the last time the Dragons posted more than six wins in a season and the last winning record they had prior to last year’s 6-5 mark.
That drought ends tomorrow, when I travel to BHS for an interesting showdown between the Dragons (3-0) and Class 2A Division I power Hawley (3-1).
Bangs has the better overall numbers, but Hawley has faced a slightly tougher overall schedule, making this pick a perplexing one.
District 2-3A Div. II Week 4 Report: Ballinger rallies to beat Clyde with two fourth-quarter TDs
Ballinger 21, Clyde 14 — Trailing 14-7 after three quarters, Ballinger rallied with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to improve to 4-0.
Carter Arrott scored on a 13-yard run with 9:36 to play to knot the game at 14. Shortly thereafter, Garrett Dixon scored on another 13-yard run at the 6:49 mark to put the Bearcats over the top.
Dylan Neuman led Clyde (1-3) with 75 yards passing, 109 yards rushing and one score.
District 5-3A Div. II Week 4 Report: Comanche remains unbeaten with win over Tolar
Comanche 36, Tolar 6 — Leading 9-0 at the break, Comanche blew this one open with a 27-6 second half.
Hudson Welch threw for 123 yards and two scores and Logan Wilkerson rushed for 106 yards and another touchdown to keep Comanche (4-0) unbeaten.
Tolar slipped to 0-4 with the loss.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Jim Ned heads to Cisco for interclass showdown

Week 4 arrives and I’m finally hitting my stride on pick accuracy.
It’s been an odd year thus far, both in terms of results and overall feel. It’s been tough to gauge.
Nonetheless, we’re hitting the road once again this Friday, with the Big Country Preps Game of the Week landing at Chesley Field in Cisco, where the Loboes (2-1) will play host to a Jim Ned club that is two divisions larger than they are.

GAME STORY: Anson holds off Dublin rally to remain unbeaten
DUBLIN — The Anson Tigers fought off both fatigue and the loss of momentum midway through Friday’s game against Dublin to come away with an exhausting 44-28 win.
Dylyn Pyle threw for 161 yards and rushed for 89 while accounting for two touchdowns to lead the Tigers (3-0), who held off a Dublin rally to remain unbeaten.
Sophomore quarterback Chris Teten led Dublin (1-2), finishing with 355 yards passing and three TDs —all to Chris Ramirez, who finished with eight catches for 243 yards.
District 5-3A Div. II Week 3 Report: Comanche keeps roll going against Early
Comanche 35, Early 7 — The Indians controlled the clock and the game with 277 yards rushing on 33 carries to improve to 3-0.
Luke Wilson led the way with 144 yards and two scores. Logan Wilkerson added 72 yards and two more touchdowns to lift Comanche, which led 28-7 at the break.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Pipers head to Albany (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country picks)

Between COVID-19, wet fields and disciplinary actions taken by coaches, finding the right game to go to on Friday nights these days is often a last-minute decision.
Nonetheless, we have settled on Hamlin (2-0) at Albany (2-0) as our Game of the Week, assuming field conditions hold up.
Be safe out there. Watch for slick road conditions and please obey social distancing requirements so that we can continue playing football.

GAME STORY: Dublin overwhelms Early Lady Horns in straight sets at start of district play

The Dublin Lady Lions rebounded from two consecutive losses in pre-district play with a convincing defeat of the Early Lady Horns on Tuesday at the Early Longhorn Gym.
The Lady Lions controlled the match from the onset with a first set win, 25-21, and never once lost stride. They proceeded to win the next two sets 25-20 and 25-22, respectively.
Dublin Coach Kaitlyn Embry had nothing but praise for her varsity team saying, “They did such a good job. They pushed through, they never let up and it’s everything we really have been working hard for in preseason that actually showed up on the court tonight.”
Big Country Volleyball Statistical Leaders (through Sept. 7)
Big Country Preps will publish area volleyball statistical leaders each Tuesday at 7 p.m.
This database will be continually updated for our subscribers throughout the remainder of the season, using only those statistics submitted by area coaches.

FEATURE: At only 15, Dublin’s Teten given very big shoes to fill
DUBLIN — Following in the footsteps of what some would argue is the top quarterback in Dublin history, would be a difficult task for any players who venture through DHS.
But when you hand that duty over to a sophomore with no varsity experience, an eyebrow raise is a common first reaction.
Chris Teten is the man tasked with the job of replacing the graduated Cy Wing, a player who helped Dublin to back-to-back playoff appearances in 2018-19 (a feat DHS has only achieved three times since the 1960s.
District 5-3A Div. II Week 2 Report: Badgers rally for win over Stanton
Merkel 24, Stanton 22 —Three different Badgers — Joey Zink, Preston Jackson and Isaac Sebastian — all threw touchdown passes as Merkel improved to 2-0.
The Badgers trailed 22-18 heading into the fourth quarter before rallying for the win.

BCP GAME OF THE WEEK: Pipers return to Hawley in rematch of classic (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country picks)
LAST WEEK: 34-15, .694
SEASON TOTAL: 34-15, .694
If this were a horse race, Gramps Ren just stumbled out of the gate.
A .694 pick percentage is one of the worst weeks I’ve had in recent memory — brought on by a disastrous 15-9 tally (.625) in the six-man ranks.
That stinks.
Alas, we have yet to reach the first turn, so it’s way early. If I’m not hitting over .800 down the backstretch, I may resort to consulting with a palm reader.
Here’s a look at this week’s Big Country football games.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Big Spring’s Baeza takes the top spot
It has been at least years since we’ve seen the type of offensive execution exhibited by the Big Spring Steers in Friday’s 36-14 win over Vernon. And Big Country Preps has never had a Big Spring player as its player of the week.
Until now.
Junior quarterback Gabriel Baeza helped bring both of those streaks to a close, hitting 20 of 32 passes for 282 yards and four scores. In his spare time he also rushed nine times for 56 yards and two more touchdowns, giving him 338 total yards and a direct hand in six scores.
In doing so, he takes our first Big Country Preps Player of the Week for the 2020-21 school year. It was the first season-opening win for the Steers since a 58-56 win over Kerrville Tivy on Aug. 30, 2014.

GAME STORY: Dublin christens Cervetto Field with win over De Leon
DUBLIN — Friday night was a big night for both the Dublin and De Leon football teams as high school athletics resumed for the first time since mid-March for both schools following the COVID-19 shutdown by the University Interscholastic League.
“Our world, as we know it, came to a screeching halt,” De Leon coach Andrew Dickson said. “In small towns like ours, there’s not much going on besides high school sports. We need it. Our kids need it, our community needs it and it’s scary.”
In the end, it was Dublin that came out with a 33-7 come-from-behind win to open Bob and Norma Cervetto Field. The field is named after Dublin’s current head coach and his wife, both longtime educators.
District 5-3A Div. II Week 1 Report: Comanche scores road shut out at Mason
Comanche 14, Mason 0 — A veteran Comanche club pulled off a major upset of fourth-ranked Mason by forcing two turnovers.
Comanche led 6-0 at the break and was able to extend that lead to two scores by the end of the third quarter to chart its first-ever win over Mason.

After picking a career-high 83 percent a year ago, I was feeling quite self-assured and self-important at the close of last football season.
Little did I realize that a year later, I’d be happy to just to have games to pick and not care about what the percentage is.
In short, the world has dealt me a serious dose of perspective.
We have football, ladies and gents. Let’s hope a sense of normality returns with it.
