BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Wall quarterback Landon York snags this week’s accolade

What more can be said about the performance of Wall senior Landon York last week other than it was a model of efficiency?
Our Big Country Preps Player of the Week shredded Grape Creek in a 48-0 district win to clinch the District 4-3A DII championship.

Along the way, York connected on 18 of 21 throws for 246 yards and get this: seven touchdowns. That means one out of every three throws resulted in points.

How good of a night did he have? How about a ridiculous quarterback rating of 294.1?

It was a thrilling end to a game that saw a ho-hum first half played in a driving rain give way to a second half full of momentum swings and stunning turns of events.

GAME STORY: Fourth-quarter rally leads Clyde past Breckenridge in district opener

CLYDE — Having a drive where a team needs to gain at least 30 yards to convert a first down is usually something that can derail an offense’s momentum in a football game.

If it happens twice in a game? That’s a recipe for disaster.

Despite the odds being against them, the Clyde Bulldogs overcame two possessions where it needed a least 35 yards for a first down with a fourth-quarter rally to beat Breckenridge 22-14 at Bulldog Stadium to open District 6-3A Division I play on Friday night.

FEATURE: Freeman has experienced Clyde squad rolling in second year as head coach

When Courtney Freeman was named the new volleyball coach at Clyde shortly before the beginning of the 2024 season, she immediately was met with an array of formidable challenges.

Surprisingly, the biggest one wasn’t the fact that she was succeeding the highly successful Laura Carr in that position.

Carr led Clyde to the playoffs routinely throughout her nine-year stay there, and her 2023 team made it to the Region I-3A semifinals.

Meanwhile, as Carr moved on after that season (to become an assistant principal in Wichita Falls ISD), so, too, did some of the better senior volleyball players in Clyde High School history. The cupboard Freeman inherited was far from bare, given the type of program Carr established, but it wasn’t filled with experienced, heirloom-quality athletes, the likes of which helped Carr make Clyde a perennial volleyball contender.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Big Spring quarterback takes the top spot

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Comanche senior crosses 500-kill milestone while helping CHS to tourney win

Photo provided by Randy Day

Milestones catch our eye when selecting our Big Country Preps Player of the Week, as do great weekly performances. But when both occur at the same time, you can rest assured that player will be in the running for the top spot.

This week the spotlight goes to Comanche senior outside hitter J’Lee Salinas, who not only helped the Maidens to the Heart of Texas Tournament Championship in Brownwood, but she also hit the 500-kill milestone in process.

CLYDE FEATURE: Electric dual-threat QB Wright focused on smoothing rough edges as junior

By his own admission — and that of Clyde coach Johnathon Haddock — Devan Wright was more of an athlete playing quarterback than a polished signal caller last year as a sophomore.

But the talented youngster still did enough in that role to establish himself as one of the area’s most explosive playmakers in 2024.

Now a junior with a much firmer grasp on the nuances of his position, Wright is looking to become a more complete player this fall. And after rushing for 1,074 yards and nine touchdowns and passing for 1,220 yards and 13 more scores a year ago, that could be scary news for the Bulldogs’ opponents.

2025 CLYDE FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Junior-led Bulldogs look to take next step in Haddock’s second year

Hired last June to take over the Clyde program, former Cooper offensive coordinator and Plainview head coach Johnathon Haddock had less than three months to get his staff filled and his team ready for the start of the 2024 season.

While he ended up leading CHS to the playoffs as the fourth seed out of District 3-3A Division I, the Bulldogs’ 4-7 campaign was a whirlwind experience for all involved.

With that season in the rearview and a full offseason to prepare the coming one, Haddock is expecting things to go more smoothly in 2025. And while the Bulldogs will have to rebuild their lines after graduating 14 of 29 lettermen from last year’s squad, the Clyde coaching staff and players enter the year with more confidence and a higher comfort level on the whole.

Our All-Big Country Preps Softball and Baseball Teams, released Saturday and Sunday, respectively, are in place to honor those who achieved the most on-field success in 2025. It is off the field, however, where character, grit, and work ethic are often measured. And it is with our Big Country Preps All-Hustle Team that we wish to honor those players, male and female, who were (simply put) the hardest-working, best teammates in the area this spring.

This team isn’t about who the best baseball and softball players were.

The All-Hustle team honors effort, discipline, toughness, coachability and selflessness — traits that coaches wish they had in every player and upon which championships are built.

It is for that reason that this team is largely selected by area coaches and described in their own words.

Big Country Preps is now honored to present these individuals to you — the best team players (boys and girls) that the Big Country had to offer during the 2025 season.

The players below are listed in no particular order.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brock’s Mylee Cedillo takes this week’s accolade with two doses of late-game heroics

If one is to play the role of hero, there’s not a better time to do it than in postseason play in your senior year.

Brock’s Mylee Cedillo lived that experience — not once, but twice in last week’s uber-intense bi-district series with fifth-ranked Levelland that saw the Lady Eagles edge the Loboettes 2-1 and 7-6 in 13 innings.

It all began Friday night in Game 1, with Levelland pitcher Aubrey Rivas carrying a no-hitter and a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning. Cedillo responded to the pressure with an RBI double to drive home both Lily Springstead (who walked) and courtesy runner Emily Faddis (running for Ali Coleman who reached on an error) to give Brock a 2-1 win.

REGIONAL TRACK: Wall, Gordon take boys regional titles; Eula snags 1A girls regional championsip

ABILENE — Both teams had dominated the Big Country and surrounding area for the entire track season, so few were stunned on Saturday when both Wall and Gordon captured the Region I-3A and II-1A boys championships at Abilene Christian University’s Elmer Gray Stadium.

It completed a near clean sweep of the regional meets from teams in the Big Country Preps coverage area, with Eula taking the 1A girls title and Wall finishing second to Holliday in the 3A girls regional meet.

“That’s always awesome ,” Wall coach Craig Slaughter said of taking the regional team title. “You have to have talented kids who perform at the right time.

“We just had some monster performances all weekend long. Kid after kid PR’d and we just had an incredible couple of days.”

REGION I-3A TRACK MEET: Area athletes nab 12 field event medals on first day

ABILENE — Area athletes got off to a successful start at the Region I-3A track meet, combining to collect 13 medals and earn nine automatic berths to the state track meet during the event’s first day Friday at Abilene Christian University’s Elmer Gray Stadium.

With expected overnight storms pushing all field events to Friday, male competitors from the Big Country Preps coverage area tallied seven total medals — four golds, a silver and two bronzes — while area girls athletes claimed six medals, earning two of each shade.

The big winner Friday was the Wall boys, who accounted for five of those medals on their way to an early lead in the team race. The Hawks, who earned 42 points take a 22-point lead on second-place Idalou, will try to close out the team championship when the meet continues at 2 p.m. Saturday with the running finals.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Wall’s Jones takes the award with spectacular effort at area meet

The best way to describe the area meet performance of our Big Country Preps Player of the Week (Wall’s Briggs Jones) is to simply let his coach, Craig Slaughter do the talking.

“He ran a blistering 10.41 to set a school record and win the 100 meters,” Slaughter said. “He broke his long jump record with a jump of 23-11.5. I only let him jump twice because he was running out of room in the pit and I need that dude cranked up this week.

“Then he destroyed his triple jump record with a jump of 48-7.25

GAME STORY: Jim Ned capitalizes on five errors, holds off late Clyde rally

TUSCOLA — The Jim Ned softball team only managed two earned runs off Clyde pitcher Kaycee Bingham on Friday, but five errors by the Lady Bulldogs led to seven unearned runs as the Lady Indians picked up a 9-7 win in District 6-3A action.

The win was the fifth in a row for the Lady Indians and pushed Jim Ned to 8-2 over its past 10 games.

It also put the Lady Indians in position to claim the top seed in the Class 3A Division I postseason as they have a 1½-game lead over Sweetwater in the standings with two games to play.
