CLASS 4A/5A BI-DISTRICT REPORT: Big Country teams combine to go 6-1 in strong opening-round showing

REGION I-4A DIV. I

Big Spring 38, El Paso Riverside 35 — The Steers pulled out and absolute thriller over the District 1-4A DI champion Rangers, scoring the winning points on a wild fourth-and-10 play with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game.

Quarterback Gavin Padron, who passed for 230 yards and three touchdowns, evaded multiple sack attempts with some creative scrambling in the backfield before heaving it up running Kavien Ford in the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown hookup. That ended a back-and-forth that saw three lead changes in the final 15 minutes.

DISTRICT 2-4A DIV. I WEEK 11 REPORT: Big Spring can’t keep pace with Andrews in loss; Brownwood idle

Andrews 40, Big Spring 20 — The Mustangs limited the Steers to just 256 yards of total offense while rushing for 260 yards of their own on their way to a lopsided win.

Behind a big day by quarterback Ashton Galvan (23-110, 1 TD rushing; 11-16-0—132, 2 TDs passing), Andrews (6-4, 2-2) scored the first 24 points and led 32-7 by halftime. Big Spring rallied to pull within 32-20 with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns, but that’s as close as it would get to the lead.

DISTRICT 2-4A DIV. I WEEK 10 REPORT: Brownwood wraps up district title with blowout win over Andrews

Brownwood 47, Andrews 3 — The Lions wrapped up a perfect run through District 2-4A DI, routing the Mustangs to close their regular season at 8-2 overall and 4-0 in league play.

Brownwood, which claimed its first district title since 2010, raced out to a 21-0 lead after one quarter and increased its advantage to 31-3 by halftime. The Lions outgained the Mustangs 391-213, limiting AHS to 63 yards passing with three interceptions.

DISTRICT 2-4A DIV. I WEEK 9 REPORT: Brownwood routs Estacado; Big Spring bounces back against Lake View

Brownwood 52, Lubbock Estacado 14 — The Lions stayed perfect in district play with an impressive showing against the Matadors, piling up 502 total yards in a blowout win.

Behind another big rushing game by Konlyn Anderson (29-160, 3 TDs) and quarterback Ike Hall (15-147, 2 TDs), Brownwood built a 24-7 lead by halftime, and the Lions were never threatened after in improving to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in league action.

FEATURE: Talented Lions playing ‘Brownwood football’ as stretch run approaches

As Texas high school football legacies go, there are few programs on a par with Brownwood. Under legendary coach Gordon Wood, the Lions made getting to and winning state titles almost commonplace. From 1960 to 1981, Wood led his team to seven championships and finished second another time.

However …

Given that the last raising of the trophy occurred more than four decades ago, it certainly could be argued that what was noted in the previous paragraph is old news.

The fact is: It isn’t.

DISTRICT 2-4A DIV. I WEEK 8 REPORT: Brownwood routs Lake View to stay unbeaten in league play

Brownwood 60, San Angelo Lake View 13 — The Lions dominated the Chiefs from start to finish, outgaining LVHS 451-238 in a blowout win.

Behind big rushing games by running back Konlyn Anderson (17-156, 5 TDs) quarterback Ike Hall (10-126, 2 TDs), Brownwood scored the first 38 points of the game and built a 52-7 lead by halftime. The Lions (6-2, 2-0) finished with 354 rushing yards on just 29 carries.

DISTRICT 2-4A DIV. I WEEK 7 REPORT: Brownwood routs Big Spring in league opener

Brownwood 41, Big Spring 10 — The Lions piled up 442 yards of total offense and took advantage of five Steers turnovers in a blowout win to open district play.

Brownwood (5-2, 1-0), which got a solid performance from backup quarterback Chance Jones (10-16-2—213, 3 TDs passing), led 21-3 by halftime and used a 13-0 run through the third quarter to put the game away.

DISTRICT 2-4A DIV. I WEEK 6 REPORT: Seminole pulls away from Big Spring as league goes 1-4

Seminole 63, Big Spring 28 — The Steers put up 462 yards of total offense, but it wasn’t nearly enough in a lopsided loss to the Indians.

Seminole countered with 574 total yards, including 432 passing, to build a 35-14 halftime lead and hold off a second-half Big Spring rally that saw the Steers pull within a touchdown (35-28) midway through the third quarter.

GAME STORY: Stephenville pulls away in second half for 42-21 win over rival Brownwood

STEPHENVILLE — Brownwood hung with archrival Stephenville for a half Friday, but ultimately the Yellow Jackets were just too much for the visiting Lions in a 42-21 win at Memorial Stadium.

After the teams went to halftime tied at 14, SHS outscored Brownwood 21-0 in the third quarter before scoring on the first play of the fourth to turn what had been a tightly contested game into a four-touchdown lead and a lopsided victory.

BHS was only outgained 417-384, rushing for 155 yards to the Yellow Jackets’ 149. But the Lions were hurt by three turnovers — two during Stephenville’s big third quarter.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Senior from tiny Stephenville Three Way lands this week’s award

Some people in the Big Country may not even know where tiny Three Way High School is. 

For the record it’s on the outskirts of Stephenville, it plays in District 11-1A DI (six-man) and if our Big Country Preps Player of the Week has any say about it, you’ll be hearing a lot more about the Braves in the near future. 

Colt Berry, a senior spreadback, had an eye-popping performance last week in a 73-54 win over Aquilla, amassing 561 all-purpose yards to help the Braves (1-3) to their first win of the year.

DISTRICT 2-4A DIV. I WEEK 5 REPORT: Brownwood throttles Connally, Big Spring outlasts Snyder

Brownwood 52, Waco Connally 21 — Ike Hall passed for 157 yards and a two touchdowns while rushing for 123 yards and two more scores to fuel the Lions to dominating victory over the Cadets.

Kolyn Anderson added 113 yards and two touchdowns rushing, while Thad Hinds received for 92 yards and two TDs as Brownwood (4-1) outscored Connally 28-7 in the second half.

For the game, the Lions outgained the Cadets 442-297, rushing for 285 yards in the victory. Connally, which gained all but 27 of its yards on the ground, was led by Kiefer Sibley, who rushed for 227 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries.

DISTRICT 2-4A DIV. I WEEK 4 REPORT: Big Spring takes care of Sweetwater to improve to 3-1

Big Spring 20, Sweetwater 7 — Gavin Padron passed for 286 yards and two touchdowns while Kavien Ford rushed for 96 yards to fuel the Steers to a two-touchdown win over  the Mustangs.

Big Spring, which improved to 3-1 with the victory, outgained Sweetwater 401-159 and held a 3-2 advantage in the turnover margin. Despite this, the Steers trailed 7-0 after one quarter and were tied 7-all at halftime, before taking control of the game with a pair of scores in the third quarter.

GAME STORY: Brownwood defense silences shorthanded Glen Rose

BROWNWOOD — With an unbeaten but shorthanded Glen Rose team coming to Gordon Wood Stadium on Friday, the Brownwood Lions were well prepared for the normally explosive Tigers. 

With standout Glen Rose quarterback Hudson White out with an injury, the Lions held the Tigers to a season-low 275 yards in total offense in a 17-3 win. 

Ike Hall threw for 94 yards, rushed for 53 and accounted for two scores to lead Brownwood (3-1), which notched its third straight win since a season-opening loss to Wylie.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Brownwood entertains red hot Glen Rose (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country picks)

LAST WEEK: 51-10, .836
SEASON TOTAL: 131-42, .757

Football picks are something I take pride in and it irritates me to no end when I stink it up. So let’s just say, I burned some midnight oil to get that situation corrected last week. 

As a result, the column recovered with a solid .836 percentage in Week 3, salvaging my bruised ego after a disastrous Week 2 tally. In all, 51 of 61 area picks hit the mark last week, elevating my season’s record above 75 percent. 

That’s more like it.

Week 4 in the meantime, presents a lineup of some of the most difficult area picks we’ve had this season — including an explosive Glen Rose team facing Brownwood in our BCP Game of the Week. Let’s dive in, shall we?

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Clyde quarterback takes the top spot

In a week that featured several performances worthy of capturing the Capital Farm Credit/BCP Player of the Week award, Clyde quarterback Blake Carr narrowly captured the top spot with an explosive performance in a 41-21 win over Merkel. 

Carr, a junior, hit 18 of 23 passes for 311 yards and four scores as CHS improved to 2-1 on the year.  He also rushed six times for 106 yards and a fifth touchdown on a 46-yard run.

DISTRICT 2-4A DIV. I WEEK 3 REPORT: Brownwood, Big Spring rally for victories

Brownwood 33, Burnet 20 — The Lions rallied from a 14-0 first-quarter deficit to defeat Burnet, outscoring the Bulldogs 33-7 over the final three quarters of a two-touchdown win.

Brownwood (2-1) pulled ahead 17-14 by halftime, before using a 9-0 run through the third quarter to take control of the game.

The Lions, who outgained Burnet 436-240, were led by quarterback Ike Hall (14-20-1—246, 1 TD passing; 9-25, 2 TDs passing) and running back Konlyn Anderson (22-132, 1 TD rushing). Thad Hinds also had a big day for for the Brownwood offense, catching nine passes for 185 yards and a score.
